x800 system not owing et fps, help

(dommafia) #1

i have
p4 ht 2.6
1024ddr
2 80gig hd
x800 xt all-in-wonder

I hooked up this slowly while saving up money. i first had a ati 9600 and bought a 9800 pro then bought a nvidia 6800 gt 256mb and didnt see much diference over the 9800 pro so i decided to shell out $520 more for a x800 xt aiw and im still not getting ownage fps, i cap at 76 cuz i get like 50 - 100 fps, but the thing that bothers me is that how can this setup dip below 76 !! i thought i was gonna be able to cap at 125…

i ran some tests with a timedemo and weather i maxed my resolution to the max (including highest quality settings) or run them in the shittiest graphic settings theres only like 4 fps dirence in the fps average. im inclined to think its not my vid card then, can it be my p4 slowing things down? is 2.6ghz not enough for x800 to really shine in fps?

please help and pardon my bad english, its my second language.

much thx in advance.

what chipset do you have? if its an nforce get the “platform / nforce drivers” - “unified driver” from this page http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

surprised if there’s that much difference over the 9600, ET is mostly all in the CPU.

(Nail) #4

afaik, high fps depends more on FSB and Ram speed than vid card
I noticed about 30 fps difference between 400 mhz FSB and 800 mhz FSB when I upgraded my buddies gaming box

current AGP to CPU Controller driver ?<update> [or pci/pci-X]
Did you install the card properly as directed specifically by the book ?
TBH, you’ve got a different problem that getting a new card won’t solve. (That didn’t sound good) I just mean that your system needs some tender loving care/adjustments/updates and then you should get at least 200+ fps (*depending).

It’s all about CPU and FSB. ET runs about equally fast on my geforce 3 and 6800GT.

so i basicly spent over $1000 in vein? this is the only game i love to play, and now i feel like a jackass :frowning: thx for the info. Does anyone know of a program or a way i can tell what my fsb is? and if possible how to upgrade it. (even if it cant be upgraded through software just tell me how i can find my fsb speed)

thx again guys.

sell the other video cards ASAP and keep the X800, check all your system drivers and upgrade them as needed…

Edit:

WCUID FREE program 250kb

Try using Google, there is loads of pages of information on this jargon.

thx eb for link.

I decided to just overhaul my pc, went down to compusa and bought a new intel 3.0 ghz which didnt work with my current mobo, they suggested to buy a $89 abit mobo that would work so i accepted. Then my 2 HD’s didnt work with the abit mobo cuz they are ata and abit is sata :frowning: .

ok they suggest to buy a pci ata serial card ( i think thats the name). so i can keep my HDs then after all this they call me up and said they overlooked that the abit mobo wouldnt fit my current case and so you guessed it, i had to pay for a new tower.

I’m not all that upset though, i will have an updated system with a new case which i actually saw and like. See through side panel, front fan, nothing helpful but a lot of eyecandy for my non computer friends to see :stuck_out_tongue:
I’m expecting the a call from them to let me know i can pick up my system. Hopefully theres no more “oh sorry but u also need this…” because this is feeling like a ploy to drain my monetary resources :frowning:

WISH ME LUCK!

and sorry for the long story but i had to vent!

ps I’m at my friends comp. good day all.

poor guy, I don’t think all of that was necessary, but do what you will.
I feel for ya…sounds like you’ve had a hard time and compusa wants your wallet.
-----As long as it makes you happy bro, that’s all that matters.

I bought the Gigabyte version of the ATI X800 XT. My PC was originally an AMD 2500 with 512 meg of Ram and an ATI 8500 64 AIW. I haven’t really checked the FPS, but I based my improved performance on the resolution and settings I am able to use. On my old vid card, I ran ET at 800x 600 res. I now run it at 1280x1024 with max settings.

However, for high performance games like Doom 3, even that card was not enough. So I upgraded my mboard/cpu/Ram to an AMD 64 3500 with 1 gig of ram. I get all the goodies that Half-life 2 and Doom 3 can provide at 1024x768 resolution. I may be able to go higher. But I haven’t needed to. My total cost was also $1000. But I’ve got the results I want and I installed it myself.

No offense, but you probably got screwed by Compusa. Unless your old case was a miniature box with a mini motherboard, your Abit one should have fit. Also, I doubt very highly that any motherboard manufactured would be strictly SATA and no also be compatable with ATA hard drives. Hardware is generally backwards-compatable for many years and ATA hard drives are hardly obsolete like an ISA slot.

Now I’m curious, what is the model of the motherboard they sold you?

(Nail) #12

a lot of the new abit cards only have one ide slot and it’ll prolly be seen as a cdrom slot by most comp “builders”

Hey diego, nice reply  and now to the conclusion of my saga!

let me answer some of your question…

it turned out that the board did indeed support my 2 current HD’s so they refunded me for that pci ata card (or whatever its called) and the my ORIGINAL case WAS a mini tower. I boutght my pc from gateway and i think they use those mini towers on all their system. But the need for a bigger case was true.

Here’s the best part, they didn’t charge me for the computer case  WHICH IS FREAKING HUGE and PURTY (pretty) see-through  so i bought some neon lights along with an antec led fan…

Anyway i’m glad some people read and responded to my thread and most of all there was a happy ending  i can now cap my computer at 125 without a single prob  at any map, i saw it drop to 90 in a 40 player server on railgun. I’m happy with compusa after all, now my system is back to raping et in the butt like it should have been… trick jumps here i come.

HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND ALL! I’LL be busy playing et to recover my 1 day 1/2 without my computer hehe
