WTF is up with the Servers?

(schmeisser) #1

I think we have reached user saturation, my friends. I tried to get onto one effing server or another for 20 mins. of my precious lunch hour. “Low pings only”, “server full”, freeze-up, etc. I think this game is becoming a victim of it’s own popularity. It’s a bad day when I don’t get to vent my frustration anonymously on total strangers. Now I’ll have to yell at my kids instead. I tried logging on to RTCW servers, similar deal, a few games with high pings, not many players. This sucks!!!

Back when my video card worked (sweet memories)…

Anywho…When I would connect to some servers I would get “For low pings only” however I knew that my ping was good to that machine. It may have something to do with my puter being 5 years old but I would just hit ‘reconnect’ and it would let me in.

plus i don’t know if you are taking advantage of this tool but i find using the different filter options a great help. it helps me cut back on the time of trying to find a server i would like.

Are you guys using All Seeing Eye? I tried it once, didn’t see any big advantage. Am imissing something?

That “Low Ping Only” Message is a bug IMO…I think it’s just telling you that the server has that enabled…Just click Reconnect and you should be able to get back in (Provided your ping falls below the threshold).

Yes. ASE provides a huge range of functionality that the in-game browser does not. You can filter servers by a wide range of criteria to ensure the list it presents you with is meaningful to you.

I have my filters set to European only (as I’m in the UK) and not full or empty (so I can get on and there are already other players there). I can filter by mod, to ensure I don’t accidentally end up on a Shrub server. I can sort the list by any column and preview the players on the server in a separate pane before joining (without having to highlight a server and click a button to get server details). I can find buddies easily and set-up several lists of favourite servers.

Now, if only I could make a filter to filter out the 6 - 10 map Campaign servers I’d be laughing. :banghead:

any one know how to get gamespy to filter pre 1.0.2 patch servers?

(Wraith2k3) #8

Yes, you find gamespy, and click “uninstall”.

Edit: By gamespy, I assume you mean gamespy arcade? If so, dont use it. It’s worse than the in-game browser. Use ASE instead if you have to use a third-party browser.

ASE rules… gamespy drools. I used to use gamespy classic (liked alot at the time) and arcade (Arcade was horrible). Tried ASE and is by far the best out there. Once you have a server list up or some favorites saved… can still scan or ping even if master servers are down to see whos playing.
ASE can also be set it up in the options to show server, IP, map, etc in your irc channel when you connect to a server.

v51, I agree!

BTW, Rivr you’ve done some nice maps bro!

By the way, what constitutes “low pings”? I average about 80, but have gotten the “low pings only” on servers anywhere from 50 to 150 ping rate. What’s up with that? Tried to play at lunch again today. 10 minutes of frustration trying to get on any server. Finally got on a 10 map campaign, which I hate, since all those other players with unlimited time have boocoo xp and kick my ass. Poor, poor pitiful me. Whahhh!

It’s controlled by the server variable sv_maxping (which you can see in the server info window pane (lower right corner) in ASE). The SD server for example has sv_maxping 200 (ms), and I still occasionally get the “server is for low pings only” message (although I ping around 50 to it). Clicking Reconnect always works though.
