worse than n00bs? not possible....surely?

I just hate it when people are to repair the tank at the beginning of Goldrush, and all they do is just standing outside, strafing by the opening and fireing a few shots once in a while. You just have to storm in and ignore the enemies, but it’s much easier if more than one person does this. Of course, most don’t even think of beign an engineer to begin with, so that’s another problem.

Oasis and Battery are also good examples. Too many are just waiting for an Axis to show up, and always end up giving them time to respawn and go through the whole process all over again.

This problem is either getting worse, or I’m just getting more pissed off with it…

I was playing fuel dump just now, the tank was a little way out of the cave and damaged by repeated field ops arty strikes. I was the only engineer on a team of covert ops and field ops (no medics or soldiers at all).

I couldn’t go near the tank because enemy field ops were continually arty striking it, so I figure the snipers woul’d be able to take them out…

Three of them were discussing the meaning of existence in the command post. 2 of them were on the hill trying to snipe, but happened to suck like a Dyson on crack. And to cap it off, a field ops was standing, yes standing between the two snipers on top of the hill firing random tommy shots at passing enemies.

The only other guy was the other field ops, who to be fair was airstriking the base quite a bit.

I repeatedly asked people to either go engie, cover me while I repair or take out the enemy field ops. Repeatedly, nothing changed  I left.

It’s games like that, that make you want to stop playing ET because it seems like there’s not enough sense to go around. I haven’t had a good round of ET for days and it’s beginnig to get right on my tits.

Oh well, once more into the breach…

“Hey, we’ve got only ONE single engineer on our team who’s trying to fix the tank (which by the way we need to complete this) - and it looks like he’s having a really tough time. Hmm… I’ve got an idea; I’ll go up there with the rest of the snipers and try to nick the Axis’ helmets, just next to their own spawning point. Yeah, that’s a great idea…!”

Anyway…

It seems like one of the really great aspects of ET - the teamplay - which is virtually essential to complete the “complex” objectives (not meant as sarcastic), is also, at the same time, one of the worst. When it just doesn’t work, when the whole float in the game seems to be completely constipated, it just doesn’t make me want to play this game anymore either. However, I used to get a lot more annoyed by this, but have learned to play on the “right” servers and quit early enough when I forsee the aforementioned issues. I usually play through the game, no matter what, if it’s a map I can complete myself (Oasis, Battery, Radar), but otherwise I’ll go find myself a better playground if it gets too bad.

I get so mad when ppl on the attacking side are 2 scared to move forward, in fact it annoys the crap out of me.

All I want to know is why do these guys hang back?

(damocles) #26

Well, just had an interesting 2 rounds on one of the bygames servers. I joined just after the start of Battery. Surprise surprise, several blind allied snipers were complementing an otherwise decent team. However, we only had two engineers. Didn’t stop us though. We built that ramp so many times I went from 0 XP to level 3 engie in 22 minutes. No the main problem this time was cowardice once again. This time, the moron field ops figured the best way to use the assault ramp was to stand at the bottom and throw airstrikes up top. REAL lot of use that one. Every time I attempted to get up there, I got TKd. Then shortly after a Axis CvOps blows the ramp.

As if that wasn’t bad enough - we go on to the next map of GoldRush and again only 2 engineers. One runs off to blow all the barriers (fair enough I suppose) leaving me to deal with the tank. Single handedly I manage to get the tank as far as the first barrier with constant repairs while hiding under the back of the tank to shield me from some of the artillery. Of course, the barrier has been rebuilt by now so I alone have to survive long enough to plant and repair the tank. Eventually we are in thre courtyard (three guesses who blew the last tank barrier) and blow the vault. Now most of the team had sense to switcxh roles now, most field ops went medic and engies went medic/covert ops. Quite a nice team layout, except for one guy who shall remain nameless <cough>sgtredfox<cough>. I repeatedly mention to him that the mortar he is weilding is effectively useless at this time. I even specced him to see that he wasn’t really doing much damage, just the occasional kill. After a few polite but ignored requests for him to change weapon, I politely said to him:

“lose the fucking mortar redfox, it’s useless now”

in the hope he might listen. As if it was bad enough he was still using it and doing nothing to help the team, I got a uniform from the enemy, had a nice clear run across the courtyard having killed a medic, machine gunner and a guy on the MG nest. Guess what - you guessed it - I got red fox’s mortar shell in my face. I was going to let this go until I respawned and saw him standing near the spawn spamming over and over “I need ammo, I need ammo”. I saw red. And no, it wasn’t a fox. When someone gave him ammo and he resumed mortaring, I stabbed him in the back several times. After this I spent every respawn trading bullets with him.

I finally snapped at the incredible ineptitude of some players. Even when you attempt to help them, explain why they should change or push forward, they still continue.

The ironic thing is - my TKing him probably made him think he was a problem to the enemy. He probably assumed an axis player was so sick of being repeatedly shelled by this ever so 1337 mortar king that he had to switch to allies and stab the mortar user.

Playing on the gold rush map as allied, somehow the ‘‘team’’ blow the bank entrance. so now go for the gold… well not! for those guys that means: Hit airstrikes and artillery support on the midle of the courtyard… :banghead:

After being killed several times inside the bank I found a way to get them on the action… changed to fieldop and (thanks to FF off) called a airstrike just a bit behind where the “team” was camping… the result: all flying to the bank… and well they just faced the situation and got the gold.

But several times I can’t do something like that and have to see myself dead trying to get the objective while others are behind walls forever…

You snipe the medic, then the field ops. The way is clear except for one rifle nade engy you know is there, which you assume 5 guys can deal with. You vsay_team spam move / path cleared / move / move and they stand there. tick tock tick tock. Ah look, here they are again. With reinforcements. All looking my way with binocs up. Hey, is that a panzer round streaking towards my face? Hmm let’s just lay here and see. People do miss.

The worst part is you assume they play like you so if they’re waiting in a cluster it must be to get the timing down on those three mortarers landing rounds right in their path. Or if they spray a few rounds at a passing enemy and run, it’s to get them to chase them and distract them from your teammates about to nail an objective close by. Err… Uhh…

hey damocles that’s actually good the field op was throwing marker grens up on Battery. Even if he gets the angle wrong and it lands before the top of the hill, on the ramp directly, or even if he fubars completely and it bounces down on the beach. At LEAST he was out in the open willing to try and in harm’s way, not sitting behind the other beach spawn with binocs calling useless arty on the roof of the bunker. And air is instant where his l33t lvl4 arty directly on top of the ramp lasts forever plus a day. When you lower your standards there’s much to be glad for there!

I think you misunderstood - they were throwing them up there the moment we built the ramp. They probably thought they were clearing the way but in reality they were were delaying the inevitable - the point where everyone has to rush up the ramp, but no-one ever did. Instead, one or two of us would advance up the ramp only to meet too much resistance to handle on our own, or friendly air support.

(ziege) #30

I got too annoyed by all the things ppl have mentioned, and just go on Axis now so I don’t have to care what teammates do. Since Axis usually win I imagine a lot of experienced players have taken to fighting for nazi’s instead, it’s a far less stressful experience.

Of course this is screwed with Railgun since SD made the wrong team attacking (I can only presume it was a mistake since they stated in an interview that they wanted all maps to have Allies attacking) - so I often switch teams for that one map. A bigger problem is that some of the custom maps are coming out with Axis attacking, so you can’t just choose a team and stick to the way you’re playing that you like best (someone even started a thread pleading the mappers to make more Axis attacking maps, and everyone said they would, sigh)

(SylverDragon) #31

That’s just bad timing. The trick is to put the air strike up there slightly before the ramp gets finished, that way it hits about the time the engineer finishes building the ramp, and has the way clear for everyone to rush up to fight the axis soldiers that didn’t get nailed (or at least the engineer that built the ramp, Where the #^!@ is my team???). Sadly, I’ve only seen this done successfully once or twice, usually its either too early (I have this bad habit, but I’m trying to get better), and the axis just pull back, wait, and then step up to shoot the allies as they come up the ramp; Or too late, in which case people tend to get TK’d as they mount the ramp. Though, I’m happy to have even a somewhat bad field ops on Battery, as opposed to none at all. If the axis are allowed to just congregate on the top of the hill, and launch panzers and the like with impunity, it makes it really damn tough to get the ramp built, and considering that I usually play engineer, this really gets to me. Run halfway up the hill, what’s that pretty light comming at me? BOOOOM respawn in 15 seconds, wash, rinse, repeat. Battery is one of those maps where the allies have to work together, or it just turns into a 30 minute meat grinder.

(funkPig) #32

Right, but I hope your not saying that you shouldn’t capture the depot yard at all. If you can hold the depot yard your chances of not getting flanked by the allies go way up. It also allows you to hit the track switch from two different directions.

Back to the thread though, I recently introduced a friend to this game and he is an attacker. He said “this game is great, you can past the first guy and find a crowd of them just standing there”

(Wraith2k3) #33

I realise that the depot yard can be important, but it still doesnt require 5 people to all go after it. If you can get the tug moving with support straight away, you can usually get it past the track switch before the allies have a chance to “dig in” so to speak

(FrankyVas) #34

I’m sort of a newbie, only been playing for a couple of weeks. Not very good at it (charge a lot into the enemies’ firing guns) but I agree, too many people just stand around waiting for the enemy to come.

Yesterday I played the fuel dump map, as allies. The tank didn’t even get across the bridge, actually we couldn’t even build the bridge. I’m not sure what the other allied players were doing but try as I could, whenever I even got close to the brige to build it, I got picked off. Managed to fix the tank a few times. Is like the other guys were blind, or didn’t know that we had to get the tank moving. That game really frustrated me.

Then we moved to the oasis. Didn’t get out of the initial courtyard. Same thing, everybody would just stand around the bottom cave or the top p-way. I went flamethrower a few times and got through the tunnels but nobody followed me to complete the advance. That really frustrated me so I left.

It seems to me that a lot of people have a different mind set than I do. A lot of people seem to worry about losing a life. As if they identify so much with the character they are playing that they do not want it to die. The way I see it, it’s just like real war. You keep throwing bodies at the front lines until you can break through. Re-spawning is like sending reinforcements up to the line. I wasn’t that player that just went splat. I am now the re-inforcement guy.

I do tend to be the rambo type but since I changed from medic to engineer I can often turn the tide singlehandedly. The more bodies you throw at the defense the sooner you can create a hole in it. I often have the most deaths of anyone in the match but I can tell you, charging into certain death time after time does produce results. These poor souls who worry about kill/death ratio rarely have much to add in the way of getting the job done.

What it all boils down to is that if half the team is playing it safe you just have to grit your teeth and do it yourself. The hell with the kill/death ratio, I don’t have to look good on the stat board, I just want my team to win!

(damocles) #36

oh my god. It’s getting worse. I have seen the ultimate cowardice…

Playing on oasis this one freak that shall remain named - PhilOfBot was playing Allies and he would go from the spawn in the old city through the tunnels, get in a firefight with the axis coming the other way and as soon as he took a few hits he would trek all the way back to spawn so he could use the health and ammo cabinets to make sure he was at full. By the time had had done this he could have died in another firefight and respawned!

It’s not even as if we were understaffed, we had a couple of good medics and filed ops playing very good support roles. I never went for want of ammo or health all match, but this guy was some kind of looney that was scared of dying.

(Lt. Jones) #37

Same here. I used to just go for the objectives but that got boring since half the time I never have any backup. Now I just go to kill as many of the enemy as I can. I really send them flying with the panzer and rifle grenades and I get the most kills almost every time. I also get the most deaths but that’s the consequence of going rambo to clear out enemy campers. :stuck_out_tongue:
