Work in progress: Istanbul-themed (loosely) map

(Touch&Go) #41

I couldn’t find any site for islamic textures but will talk with other turkish mappers- maybe it helps…

in our server we have an autorization system that checks the user names…
if you want we can do a test with just the turkish wolfers…I’m sure they will like to participate…

I put up a public beta, though it’s missing the tracemap so mortars won’t work. There are some issues with the walls of sky I used to block vis and improve performance that I need to solve first, before I put in tracemap. If I can’t figure that out, I think it will kill the map

Darker looks nicer but brighter plays better…

I would go for brighter.

edit: nvm, I always fail to notice extra pages in this msg board system…

Dude. I live in Istanbul. This map has nothing to do with Istanbul. All that people seems to know about Istanbul is mosques and places like Topkapi Palace, Ayasofya and such and I hate it. No offense, but this map really has no connection to Istanbul at all, it looks overly absurd with that name. It has a definite Old Style Middle-Eastern architecture and layout and Istanbul is nowhere near it. Even such touristic old locations here don’t look like that. You see, your map has this more arabic look with buildings everywhere. I won’t give a damn heck but I suggest you change the name, just so that it makes sense. Again, no offense (I’ve written a comment on rtcwfiles.com as well, you might have seen it).

(Ifurita) #45

yes, i changed the name to Byzantine

(denizsi) #46

oh, ok… but it still doesnt fit. you know byzantine architecture was connected to orthodox stuff, we have old places from byzantine era as well and it’s even more irrelevant
anyway, your map your decision

(Machine for to kill) #47

yeah byzantine definately doesn’t work. My sugestion is come up with a unique city name, make it up. Something that doesn’t really exist but it sounds like it would, like…Sharana. Or you could name it based on the objective (goldrush, fueld dump etc.)

And you istambul guy stop being so picky. You should be glad people want to make something (somthing very pretty I might add) that reference your country so shut it. You see what you’ve gone and done, now he’s about to make it related to greece and I don’t want that, and I’m sure as hell you don’t want that.

(chavo_one) #48

I’m sorry, but if anyone has a right to give criticism, it would be someone who lives there. :???:

If someone was making a map of your hometown, and you felt is was misrepresentative, wouldn’t you feel inclined to speak up?!

I hope my venice map embodies the spirit of venice. If it doesn’t (within reason of the game engine), I would hope that someone that knows better would speak up.

Just remember that the term ‘byzantine’ has more meanings than just a style of architecture. It can also mean twisted and convoluted as in byzantine logic, etc. In any case, this is certainly not meant to be a faithful recreation of the city, nor did I really try. But, as you said, it’s my map and it’s unlikely that I’m going to redo a bunch of stuff at this point

FWIW, I have no problems with people giving feedback on how the map actually compares to the real city. For some of the same reasons, I did change the name, though byzantine refers to the “twisted and convoluted” definition more than the “style of architecture” definition.

More so, I just wanted to make a map that I could have fun with and I have some very fond memories of Istanbul and Turkey, so I used that as a very loose starting point and started to map.

I wonder if this has any consequences, from a mapper’s perspective. I mean: Do you have to change the folder names, and stuff inside your script, if you change the filename the .map name?
If the .map file change name from AAA.map to BBB.map, do you not have to change stuff inside the shader and scripts? (Im not sure.)
Just curious!

Same process as for renaming from beta 1 to beta 2. Not difficult but a pain in the ass. You have to change:

all the files in /levelshots
levelshots referenced in scripts/[mapname]_levelshots
/maps/[mapname].bsp
/maps/[mapname].objdata
/maps/[mapname].script
/maps/[mapname]_tracemap.tga
/scripts/[mapname].arena
/scripts/[mapname]_levelshots.arena
/sounds/maps/[mapname].sps
/sounds/scripts/[mapname].sound

I’m sure I missed one or two files

Ifurita:

byzantine refers to the “twisted and convoluted” definition more than the “style of architecture” definition

I didn’t know that meaning. Just checked on dictionary. 1 out of 5 meanings is what you said. So you’re right, I was just speaking based on things I’ve seen and see everyday on my way to school which have been built in byzantine era by its residents, and on things ive learned so far on art history classes, which is why the first thing I think about is Byzantine, instead of byzantine ;).

Machine… :

And you istambul guy stop being so picky. You should be glad people want to make blah blah blah…

I would rather something not known at all than be known incorrectly, but personally I don’t care with the case of Istanbul, I just wanted to inform and perhaps correct Ifurita about it in case he wouldn’t want to do something incorrect as well. But my personal opinion doesnt matter either, for what chavo_one said sums it up.

I think it’s save to assume you are drawing the “Blue Mosque”
http://www.guideistanbul.net/sultanahmet.htm

This is the map is istanbul:
http://www.lonelyplanet.com/mapshells/middle_east/istanbul/istanbul.htm

This has a couple of beatiful 360’s of the mosque and the city Istanbul.
http://planetexplorer.online.discovery.com/ref/landmarks/landsuley.html

I think it would be awesome making the Mosque.

(Ifurita) #54

Actually, I’ve been there before and 1) I’d rather not have people fighting inside the mosque, 2) while very impressive, making the architecture and doing the textures would be a herculean task in itself.

I don’t think little 'ol me is up that.

However, if anyone ever gets a chance to go there (Istanbul and Turkey in general), I highly recommend it - except for Turkish Kurdistan, can’t say there was much to see there.

On another note, if you get a chance to visit some of the great mosques of the world, please do so. Islamic architecture and patterning is amazing and well worth the effort to experience.

(Computertech) #55

Yea, I understand not fighting in the mosque. But it is a great design. Good luck on your map dude.

(denizsi) #56

What exactly do you mean by Turkish Kurdistan? It’s weird to hear that phrase from foreign people. Asking because south eastern Turkey is often referred to as Kurdistan only because the majority are kurds in those regions, but there’s no legal geography with boundaries called Kurdistan. (But if you directly ask the kurds, some may claim there is.)

(Ifurita) #57

The area down by Silopi, across the border from Zakho, Iraq. Yes, I realize there is no official designation of Turkish Kurdistan. I’m just going to stop making any references to any thing remotely Turkish.

(denizsi) #58

ha! as you wish
