WolfET Router Problem

(WimpMiester) #1

Router: OvisLink WMU-9000VPN (Air Live) with latest firmware. Not using wireless.
WolfET v2.6

I’ve tried everything I can think of but just can’t get this game working correctly with this router. The problem is, when you go to the server list it kills the internet connection for my entire network and causes the router to display blank pages when you login to it. The system running the game stays connected to the internet and plays just fine when you connect to a server. The internet connection will come back for the rest of the network once the game is done updating the server list. The server list takes a long time to update every time you go to it. I’m just running clients and not an ET server. This also makes it hard for more than one person to play this game at the same time. I haven’t been able to find much info on all the ports this game uses. Since I’m not running a server I really shouldn’t have to open any ports in my router but something is really wrong with this game and may have to do something special. This is the only game that does this too. Castle Wolfenstein works and so does every Quake/Unreal based game I have. Also tried the BF2 demo and that worked. Read some posts in the GameSpy forums and there other people with the same problem but with different brands of routers.

ET requires no ports open to play as a client. :S

There’s nothing wrong with the game. The router behaves erratically because of bad firmware, and since you’re running the latest version you need to contact the vendor and inform them about the problem.

You could try using an alternative server browser, which may work better (or even worse) because query methods are slightly different.

sounds like the large number of connections while scanning/pinging servers is making your router choke. My modem used to do this before I found some tweaks to let it deal with stuff like that.

I’d give All-Seeing Eye a go.

The problem usually lies in the way the routers handle UDP wich ET and many other games use extensively. Many routers are really, really bad for UDP and I know many linksys users had problems when dealing with lots and lots of UDP packages making the router crash.

I already contacted the router manufacturer but they where no help. I figured if I could come up with something more detailed about the game to give them they would look into it.

You could try to update the firmware. Maybe it helps

Tell them it’s a free game and give them a download link, then they can hopefully reproduce the problem and (if they don’t get stuck playing ET) fix it.

Often this is related refreshing the server list rather than actual gameplay. The router tracks a connection for each game server that responds, which blows it’s little mind.

If you use ASE, you can limit the rate a which it sends out queries, which might help. Once you get a few favorites, you can avoid using the server list at all. Or get a router that doesn’t suck.

Yeah I know, I had this reported quite a lot to me a couple of years ago when I actively worked on my IRC bot ( Gameinfobot ) that reported players joining and leaving random servers. It scanned the servers and some people had just this problem with crashing routers back then and thought it was a bug in the bot.

I emailed the router manufacturer but so far nothing. I turned off UDP in game and yes no router trouble but of course no server list either. Is there a way to set the game to use TCP just for the server list queries?

Nope.

Try SCDS_reyalPs tip:

Apparently there are no more updates being released for ASE… which kind of sucks for the people who paid for ‘lifetime support’ :s

They finally replied to say their R&D department is going to look into it. I’m sure they will come up with a fix; they make excellent small business class products they just don’t test out games.
