Wolfenstein ET - SS skins & signs

(Vlasterx) #1

I have just made skins SS skins & signs for Wolfenstein ET. If anybody wishes to download them, they can do it fom this place http://home.drenik.net/vlasterx/wolf/wolfenstein.html

If you have any comments or sugestions, please tell me.

Is there any Wolfenstein ET site where I can upload my skins?

This is my personal view and nothing to do with Splashdamage.

Some countries in Europe have banned SS and Nazi symbols for obvious reasons. Part of the QA cycle for ET was to make sure that no SS or Nazi symbols were present in the game. Some people may find these skins offensive, so don’t be surprised if you get a mixed reception to your work.

Ok, no problem

For the record, I am not a Nazi fan or supporter and these skins have nothing to do with that! I made them so the game can be more authentic than it is now. There is nothing more fun in this game then to shoot some Nazis, or role-play evil Roach. Those Wolfenstein markings that you made can do well in Germany because of their laws, but when players want something more authentic, they want this. Just look at the other games that use Nazi markings - Battlefield 1942, Day of Defeat and so on ? all hits, and everybody plays them regardless of those markings. Maybe it is offensive to some people, but that people wouldn?t play this game at all because there are Axis involved (who of them would play on axis side at all?!?). My country (Serbia) suffered severe civilian losses because of them, but we do not change history, ban symbols or prohibit games because of that. Authenticity is all what those skins are about, and I think that most of the players agree with me.

Well, a place for everything and everything in it’s place. I don’t mind the armband, but it certainly makes me want to play Allied.

Interesting view of the universe from sock. I think it’s great that as part their QA they “genericised” the look and feel of the game. It’s true there may be some that find it offensive so I’m happy they took those people into consideration. I’m German by heritage and pretty appalled at what happened and it can be a touchy subject with some.

If you’re after realism that’s great. There may be repercussions if some people start taking the realism too far. As I’ve been thinking up ideas for maps once came to mind of creating a mission where you (axis) have to escort a traincar full of people out of the trainyard to its destination (you can guess where that will be). Needless to say I felt this was too realistic and untactful (yes, the next map in the campaign would be attacking/defending auswitz).

It’s also interesting to see the generic images in ET like the Wolf logo and the concept of a historically neutral symbology. The axis don’t make any reference to the Fuerer, etc. so they’re race neutral. However there are a couple of deviations here. The allies have a US flag on their uniforms so why not a swastika on the axis? Also there have been some posts about creating maps based on real situations. I’ve been doing my own research for my maps, finding blueprints, photos and plans of famous WWII environments and finding a lot of scenarios that would make for good game fun. I’ve also seen some interesting Nazi designs of buildings and prototype weapons that would make for a great map.

In any case, it’s a difficult balance. Realism vs gameplay. Is putting images of the swastika and Nazi symbology in a map going too far where people are shot and killed (with blood spurting out from bullet hits). Saving Private Ryan introduced us to the first (but not last) most realistic battle scene that moviegoes have seen yet that’s the most popular part of the movie and what people remember, the first 20 minutes on the beach. An interesting social commentary neverless.

I like theese skins. They are authentic.
I’m from germany and we have banned nazi-symbols.
But in my opinion it’s silly to ban them. if people are nazi’s they will get the symbols elsethere from the net. Just banning them is no way.

I think education and a critical view of history is better.
This is just a game and i like the symbols because they are just authentic.
It still looks better in a WW2-Themed Map then the Wolf-sign.
On the other hand i still have the same fun without this symbols ingame.

Can i run this skin-pack only on a unpure server?

(kotkis) #7

Sorry for my ignorance, but is it really possible to play on pure-servers with custom-skins? I mean that people can easily make their own red and green skins that help you to spot the enemies and this would be definately cheating.

(SCDS_reyalP) #8

You can play on pure server with a skin, provided that the skin pack is installed on the server. You should also still be able to play on the server without the skin.

This does lead to the chance that the server admin could install cheater skins (or wallhack .pk3s) on their server, but if the server admin wants to cheat, you are pretty much screwed from the start.

That the Nazisympols are forbidden in the single game is silly, because u are fighting against it (destroyable would be nice). But in the multiplayer,…
I dont know,… for what??
These are migthy symbols and it is not good to show them the world,…

BTW i am german too and i dont want to see this symbol,…

(Vlasterx) #10

Why? Because you are afraid of history, someone told you that or what?
You won’t become a Nazi just by looking at them or playing a game. It takes a sick mind to become one. I understand that there are laws for this signs in Germany, so ok - don’t use them. You don’t like them - don’t use them.
My friends liked them, they thought that it could be fun to play with them and I made this skins for them. No one here in Serbia looked them and told me: You sick bastard, what have you done?!? We watch WW2 movies every day, and no one is complaining. Why would be diferent with a game?

Just for a curiosity answer me this: do you (Germans) play Battlefield 1942 or any other WW2 game where Nazi signs apear?

(system) #11

I play Battlefield but didn’t manage to find a Nazisymbol. They must have been deleted.

I can’t understand Milbo, too. Theese symbols are just historical. Nothing more nothing less.
I’m looking forward to his explanation.

(Milbo) #12

Ahh,… it is not so easy like this,…

Sure,… this are only symbols,… but this symbol is a bit older than hitler (more then 4000 years). It is a very old symbol like the a pentagram,…
So people look on a sign which meaning they dont understand.
In the single player it is ok to make the mood. That RTCW is forbidden in germany is like the Nazis would act. There is a game in which the hero have to destroy the Third empire and the germans set it on the index??? That is really paranoid hehe.
I dont like signs in games generally  , I dont like the penta´s in doom or the Hexa´s in Doom or crosses, crosses of Osiris (ultima7) or a swastika,…

Many Nazis in German bought Wolfenstein caused by the story and the signs (they hoped hehe).
Then this strange thing I noticed,… the serial of one (illegal) distributed wolfreleases is ending with the number 88,… this is the chiffree of H.H. that means “Heil Hitler” (trans. “Save Hitler”). There are only two main chiffres 18 and 88. I saw that copy of the game at some friends (they took it from somewhere). So this is for me enough to believe that there are not only people like us,… who want to play realistic,… and the US people who like the signs,… who are they??
Haha,… Look Bowling for columbine,… :banghead:
So it is not so easy,… sometimes I think like you, sometimes I think it is better not to mix the signs of the two different worlds. :bump:

Probably the signs of the first WW?
:drink:

(wudan) #13

I think it’s imprtant to recognize that Wolf: ET isn’t being touted as a realistic reenactment of ANY war. It’s a game.

(Garfo) #14

i will download them as i like the game 2 be real as poss and no i am no nazi lover

(=[mG]=Spitfire) #15

You know what would be a nice a skin.A uniform of the axis in SS grenideir uniform.Camoflauged and the helmets have twigs and leaves in it.

(Milbo) #16

hehe yeah that is true at some kind,…

(Vlasterx) #17

…placed in WW2

(system) #18

but this symbol is a bit older than hitler (more then 4000 years).

Yes it’s true, but the sign was a bit different at the edges. It’s origin it Celtic if i remember correct.

I haven’t recogniced the 88 in wolf. I only know the 18 ( for Adolf Hitler) and 88 (for Heil Hitler) is used by german facist bands like “sturmwehr”, Where you can buy t-Shirt’s with 88 on it. :disgust:
If you don’t like to see pentas and other signs too. it’s ok and “konsequent” (don’t know the english word sorry. Means he stays on the line.)

(wudan) #19

…placed in WW2  :D[/quote]

Then we should have a lot more players than 64 :stuck_out_tongue:

(bogs) #20

Is there a way to tell with a game browser if server admins have chosen to install skins or custom pk3’s? I don’t think I’ve ever played a game of rtcw or et with anything other than the default skins.
