WinXP - Black Screen

(Unnk) #1

Okay after realizing this game is still active after not playing it for 5 years, I decided to try it again.

I originally was having a problem with it finding the default.cfg, that was solved by changing the shortcut to start looking in the base folder rather than the minimizer sub folder.

Now, upon startup the game will only flash with a brown screen then to a black screen. I can hear the intro and sound playing and i can use my keyboard to skip the intro. But there is absolutely no video output.

Ive tried forcing my native resolution in the target path. Tried a fresh reinstall with the 2.60b full exe.

The only thing i haven’t tried is rolling back my video drivers to a older driver, id really not like to do this as it would be a pain having to roll back and then update drivers every time i want to play wolfet.

Im running windows xp home sp3 and my graphics adapter is a Radeon HD 6770 running on a hdmi monitor.

Ive google’d this problem to no avail. There’s a couple threads from years ago but the solutions solved nothing. Im hoping some people can help me here.

Thank you!

Hmmm to be honest I don’t know any solution for this but you can try
ET Legacy
http://www.etlegacy.com/download

Have you deleted the game, then delete the wolf folder in programs.

Reinstall game and try again.

You can always copy you cfg before you start so it can be put back or ammended if needed.

mmkay, tried legacy yesterday… same problem with regular ET no video but sound is there

and i just uninstalled then reinstalled but ill uninstall and delete the folder, THEN reinstall and get back to you

would really love to play the game

(Unnk) #5

well the uninstall, delete, reinstall didnt work on my pc

so i put the 2.60b custom full install file onto a thumbdrive and then installed it onto my wifes pc

her system is basically exactly like mine except she is using a nvidia geforce 210 graphics adapter and using VGA

and it works on her pc

so im going to go ahead and say its either from using the HDMI cable or its AMD and their crappy drivers

the last thing im going to attempt is to change my color space and see if that will fix the problem

worst comes to worst i can play it on her pc when shes not using it

EDIT UPDATE

so the color space did nothing to help

just going to have to play on the wifes pc

ATI is the bane of my nostalgic gaming experience

There are possible reasons for having black screen.

[ul]
[li][strike]Wolfenstein:Enemy Territory has generated an invalid projection matrix. But since the renderer code is correct on that side( on both, vanilla and ET:Legacy ), then the problem is not here.[/strike]
[/li][li]Try to roll back or reinstall latest drivers. AMD( previously known as ATI ) is known for having problems with OpenGL graphical applications like Wolfenstein:Enemy Territory, although mostly it happens with newer versions of OpenGL.
[/li][/ul]

OpenGL - A graphical API which uses your video card to get pixels to screen, which results a frame e. what you see while playing a game. In simple words, it’s a voodoo magic!

having to rollback drivers every time i play ET would suck

is there anyway to force rendering? IE halflife can be launched with -d3d or -gl or -soft

-d3d forces direct 3d
-gl forces opengl
-soft forces software rendering

i know halflife vanilla will only open with -soft forced for me

so anyway i could use commands similar?

Unfortunately,no.

You should or may want to try out this OpenGL application to ensure that the problem is in your video card driver( well, in this case it is … ).

Here: http://fabiensanglard.net/bumpMapping/win32.zip

Extract the Release folder somewhere and click on zenFrag.exe, what is at extracted folder.

This is what you should see:

yep it wont display it ill try and reinstall the current drivers and then ill try the drivers just before the current ones i have to see if it works

thanks!
