Wils- Can you at least answer my question?

(ARK) #1

Wils,

I can understand why you locked the thread. But Im not sure I understand why you deleted my post I made.

I originally posted about a mac version of ET because I did not see anything about it in the forums. A kind poster came a long and gave me a link to the thread that which you locked. I read the whole thread. I understand it and went on to sign the petition. But there was no reason to delete my original post I created.

I simply asked why it was that we have Return to Castle Wolfenstein, but no Enemy Territory for mac. I guess I dont understand the process of ET. Is it a separate entity from RTCW? Is it its own game or is it a mod of RTCW?

I have Q3A and I play Q3F as a mod. I guess Im asking if ET is a mod of RTCW? No one answered my question yet. And no one can answer if it you delete my post.

ET is a standalone game, completely independent from RtCW. RtCW was a retail game that you had to purchase in order to obtain the ability to mod. ET on the other hand became a scrapped project when the Single Player aspect was canceled. Activision had no responsibility to release the game at all, in any form. But they decided to go ahead and release the multiplayer aspect for free. Because they receive no compensation for people playing ET, anything they release is a favor and blessing. They won’t be doing an official Mac port because it would cost more money to do, and they would receive no revenue in return.

I imagine someone in the community could do the port (which the other thread was about), but you would have to contact Activision and get their permission. Splash Damage has always said that they have no control over who gets the source code.

Ok, that clears it up. Thanks for your reply. I still wonder why there is a Linux port but not a mac port. Oh well.

They really should have charged people for the multiplayer part of it. It looks great from the pictures.

Thanks again.

Splash and id have linux users in house. People like to run their dedicated servers on linux too. Moreover, the mac port of RTCW was done by an outside company.

I deleted it because it was more or less a duplicate of the bigger Mac thread. The point I’d been trying to make in the Mac thread was that if ET was to be ported to the Mac, it wouldn’t be by us - we’re not a Mac developer - and beyond suggesting it to id/Activision, it’s not our decision to make.

Since you’d read the older thread and understood that (I thought), I decided that you’d probably got the answer you wanted. I deleted your thread because I’m anxious to avoid sparking the whole debate off again - the current remaining thread is actually the third or fourth BIG thread about the issue, and it all got quite argumentative the last couple of times.

(Bongoboy) #6

([=O=]SMYLER) #18

I have demos of the SD boys and their employment of Pantohack and am sending them to PB right now. Hopefully something can be done before the immenent (sp?) release of the mac OSX version of ET.

I must say one thing in my Friday night alcohol fueled state, after the fucking GREAT job SD did with multiplayer ET, I can’t friggin’ wait for their DOOM 3 stuff.
