Saw this on /. this morning - an overview of Doom3’s hardware requirements - more importantly the new engine and it’s hardware requirements - could be useful if you’re wondering about that Alienware PC
Will *you* be ready for Doom3?
yeah i saw it too, so my xp3000 and 9800xt dont need upgrading i guess, nice to know since i bought them 3 months ago
edit: yeah im not trying to brag or sumtin, just making the point that im happy that i dont have to buy a €500 card like the x800 to play it
Yeh I guess my P4 3.6 Ghz 1024 MB RAM and 800XT don’t need upgrading! Good to know because I really really really doubted my hardware’s ability to play doom3 !!!
No, I don’t really have a P4 3.6 ghz : ) And yesh, sorry for being such a meanie : o
1024*768 Medium Quality, no AA, no AF
5950 Ultra = average 50 FPS
9800 XT = average 50 FPS
Doesn’t sound very promising imo, since lowest FPS probably is much lower than that.
I guess I’ll be watching a 640*480 Low Quality slide show.
Yeh mouse, but that’d be kind of silly :).
Then only about 1% of the people could play doom 3 well :drink: .
Guess my XP1800 + GF3 ain’t gonna cut it then
Mind you I play ET at 43FPS, and I’m upgrading soon to a XP2400 + 9800Pro (would have to replace mobo / RAM for anything better than XP2400 and want to wait till 64bit CPU’s become a bit more “mainstream” (i.e. the hideously expensive 9xx pin chips come down in price to the current but soon to be obsolete 7xx pin variety)).
Well, my last ‘id’ experience was Quake2 - nothing quite so deflating as seeing it clunk around @ 11fps using the software renderer (the concept of shelling out cash for an uber expensive 3DFX card hadn’t fused in my mind at that point) so I wasn’t holding my breath this time round. Still, I was hoping to stave off the upgrade 'til 64bit CPU’s and O/S’s had become the norm and yet it seems that finally something has arrived that could yet persuade me to buy a wretched XBOX in the interim.
I’ll be ready as soon as I can find a 6800 GT in stock and for a sane price.
I already seen this link to the HardOcp benchmarks, I think it’s pretty stupid they only test the very best cards that you know will be okay to play it anyway. Why not test cards ppl actually have, such as 9000-series Radeons.
But anyway yes I’m ready for it, the Alpha runs fine and if comps like mine can’t run D3 then they’d have a ton of returned copies out there.
If you’re a gamer and thinking of upgrading then at least you get a good idea of whats value for money right now - it’s that or an XBOX
I like to get at least 10fps, so I’m just gonna go ahead and upgrade to one of these

FWIW I hear the game is capped at 60 FPS (which must either be untrue or MP-only, according to that graph). Also, if anyone is thinking of buying an Alienware box, PLEASE memo me first and I’ll build you one with a slightly less “kewl” case for 3/4 the cost (actually, for 1/2 the cost, the other 1/4 is to grease my pockets :)).
I heard the renderer isn’t capped at all but the game works internally at 60 Hz or something
The engine was originally written to run on a GeForce 3 and will run with most keewl effects on a X-Box (GeForce 3 / 700MHz) so I guess most modern computer will be able to play it well if they sacrifice a little bit of quality
lol, wtf XBOX has a Geforce 3 ? Shits in his pants
Well i guess its true cuze hey… guess what ! its microsoft :P, OLD CHEAP PARTS
!
heh i think i will be able to run fine with my P4 1.8 Ghz/GF FX 5600/512 MB ram
