Will this cut it?

([ToC]Death) #1

I know this may be a bit farfetched… but I don’t have a lot of money (atleast for the next couple of months or so, saving up for a new PC). Anyways, will this be able to run ET fairly well at about 20 - 30 FPS?

533MHz Celeron
192MB RAM
nVidia Riva TNT2 Model 64 - 32MB

What kind of servers can I play on (ammount of players)? I will be playing on the maximum lowest settings, for obvious reasons (if that will even work…)

Edit: I believe my old clan server doesn’t run PB… will that help improve my performance/loading time?

(kamikazee) #2

That doesn’t sound too good. AFAIK, I thought you need at least an 800 MHz P3.

Also, what OS do you run on that PC? Windows 2000, something older or Linux?

(carnage) #3

for QW i would recomened actuly going a bit above the minimum required specifications, the game has a bit of a tendancy to be more demanding in big fights etc just when you need it to keep smooth.

also when playing on my new system that is quite comfortable playing QW the game just feels better to the controls, the sort of smooth ET style physics

(kamikazee) #4

Carnage, I guess this is for W:ET (or so I hope). This will by no means cut it for ET:QW. The game will immediately die with “unsupported feature GL_…”

(SCDS_reyalP) #5

That system will barely run ET. Most people wouldn’t find it an enjoyable experience, but YMMV.

(Ragnar_40k) #6

With a Duron 700, 256MB, Geforce2 32MB I had constant 46fps on very low detail (at least most of the time).

(Nail) #7

eeeek, check around some little computer repair shops, one might have a 1 ghz cpu for real cheap, otherwise it’s going to be very sad on that old mule. Sorry I just gave away 5 comps way better than that, I would have given you one

oh yeah, run win 2K, it will help

([ToC]Death) #8

What was the average specs of the 5 PCs you gave away? Also, what kind of specs would I be looking at for $100~? I will be able to afford a really good PC (I will have $750~ in a month or two), but for now, I want a PC that can run any old game that was designed to WORK on Win98 (though I will use 2000 or XP, ofcourse).

(Sauron|EFG) #9

Where do you live?

I have an old computer (Athlon 1200/512MB/GF2 iirc) that you can have for free if you can come pick it up in Gbg, Sweden.

([ToC]Death) #10

How much would it cost to send it from where you live to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada? I will pay for the shipment.

(gloowa) #11

for shipment cost you can easly buy decent computer i think… and imagine what will be left from this CPU after all those ‘‘fragile’’ and ‘‘this side up’’ blind FedEX/UPS/etc workers.

Just check ebay: http://listings.ebay.ca/_W0QQsocmdZListingItemList?sofocus=so&sbrftog=1&socmd=ListingItemList&catref=C3&from=R2&satitle=&sacat=3736%26catref%3DC6&a14=-24&a26444=-24&a12=-24&a25710=-24&a10244=-24&alist=a14%2Ca26092%2Ca26444%2Ca12%2Ca25710%2Ca10244&pfmode=1&reqtype=2&gcs=1504&pfid=1818&pf_query=&sargn=-1%26saslc%3D3&fspt=1&sadis=50&fpos=M7A+1A1&sabfmts=1&saobfmts=insif&ftrt=1&ftrv=1&price=1&saprclo=&saprchi=100&fsop=1%26fsoo%3D1&coaction=compare&copagenum=1&coentrypage=search&fgtp=

When you find a dealer near you, then you can even save the shipping by picking it up yourself. And when you buy from a shop you usually get some months warranty on the used PC. Just check the offers for details.

([ToC]Death) #13

Great deal right here, only $64.00~ after shipping:

Edit: Just noticed it doesn’t come with a video card :O.

(Ragnar_40k) #14

You should also take into account that the bid still lasts 2 days. And bids usually go up the last hour.

(Nail) #15

they were all 1.7 celerons w/ 256/ 40 gig and geforce 2

but try places like this:

([ToC]Death) #16

Wow, thanks for the link, Nail  . None of them seem to have video cards, though… What would be a good card that won’t bottleneck a 1GHz CPU and 384MB of RAM? Or better yet, 1900+ AMD and 512MB of RAM?

(SCDS_reyalP) #17

A geforce2 (not MX) or better should do you reasonably well. If you look around, you should be able to find one for close to free.

Depending where you are, looking at local classifieds, craigslist or thrift shops/garage sales/fleamarkets may be better than ebay.

([ToC]Death) #18

I think I will get this then:

http://www.usedottawa.com/classified-ad/4085199&category=pc-desktops

I think a better video card than a GeForce2MX would be needed, but I’m not up to par with how good of a video card you needed back then for games like CoD, Bf1942, etc… (I used to own a GeForce256, but the fan stopped working :P).

Edit: I have 128MB PC133 RAM right here (not being used at the moment), which will total the RAM to 384MB.

(Nail) #19

the 1.7 celerons with geforce2 MX/MX400 I had (still have one, I’m typing on it) would run pretty consistent 43 fps on everything but Radar

([ToC]Death) #20

How about:

600MHz Celeron
256MB PC133 RAM
32MB video card (nVidia Riva TNT2 Model 64)

This would be a secondary PC for my brothers to play ET on, as I will most defintely buy one from the website Nail listed above…
