Will there be a Teamspeak like function built into QW?

(Joey B.) #1

i do hope so. would make actual team gameplay so much easier. of course you’d have to have the option of disabling it so you didn’t have to listen to the jerks

(BondyBoy007) #2

it’s been mentioned before but I’m not sure what the outcome was :banghead: ???

if it is implemented then I hope the mute-ing options are comprehensive (ability to mute individuals etc) although I’d prefer to thinks SD are concentrating on the game atm rather than something that is (imo) superfluous

I’ve yet to see VOIP implemented as well as it can be in games.
For example, having the ability to be able to select to talk to your squad members, team, same class, or just people manning the same vehicle as you.

For example, with BF2, if you jump into a tank with someone who isn’t on your team, there’s no way of directly communicating with them apart from typing, and ‘spotting’ targets isn’t precise enough.
And even if they are on your team, you don’t necessarily want to be spamming the channel with information that is only relevant to the two of you.

Using Ventrillo or TeamSpeak has so far generally been better quality, but embedding it directly into the game would allow you to communicate a lot more effectively.
Plus I think it would help you maintain a semblance of illusion that you aren’t just playing a game.

Just had a quick check, and found this, so it looks promising :

"How will VoIP work? Will there be toggles for fireteam, vehicle or nearby players, or something of the sort?

Yes, there will be toggles. I skipped the “How will VoIP work” question because it’s too vague."

Can we mute by age?
Like everyone under 23?

Or whether they pay their own rent?
That’d be all right by me.

(Invisible421) #5

oh yeah, because ya know everyone under 23 is just so immature :D. lol but seriously i agree with it not being a mandatory option when the game is launched simply because of all the programs out there that allow you to chat, even if it is a bother sometimes when you have to minimize the screen to mute sound or something.

I want it to go the other way, to make it so that 3rd party apps would be less effective, as they wouldn’t have the same functionality as the VOIP embedded in the game

so far iv been using ventrilo and is good, but in a game that has vehicles etc should have a function to speak to small group, like buttons binded… mouse wheel for spin through selections like team, fireteam, vehicle, everyone…

OP: yes.

Since when can you get in a tank with someone not on your team?! And why would you ?!

Squads obviously :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m with ya. It is a slow evolution when it comes to this subject. I hope we see it one day. VOIP in a internet game that is like playing at a well organized lan is the goal. Im happy with third party right now for the time being. Hopefully broadband will take off more so we can realize this feature.

(Surgeon) #11

You can get in any vehicle with anyone, have you played BF?

When the rest of your squad have immediately nashed off to the next flag in a jeep, with no free slots so you can’t respawn on the SL and you have respawned slightly after them, there’s no other vehicles about, it’s miles to the next flag on foot and a guy from a different squad is driving a tank with no gunner.
You then end up helping out the guy in the tank for a bit but have to type, “I’ll jump out and repair the tank”.
Then when you do, you have to make sure he doesn’t reverse over you as he tries to back away from incoming AT fire.
Because you can’t just tell him exactly where you’re standing, and if you tried to type, “Don’t reverse, I’m standing behind the tank trying to repair it whilst using it as cover”, you’d end up embedded in the tracks.
And probably annoyed that you’ve just been killed by the guy you’ve tried to help, due to the failure of the developers to think a little about a feature that they’ve chucked into the game without any thought about how it could actually be useful and improved upon.
Next question

(Surgeon) #12

Hey whistlepants.

Yeah, I’d love to see this improved upon in the future, but totally agree;
It’s going to be a slow process.

I use vent and it be fine. Tbh I dont think the benefits of having some sort of comms to help teamwork is worth having to this listen to teenagers yibber yabber!

If you could somehow prevent teenagers from using it then it would be fine

and the irish . . . nah I’d miss all the swearing

'tis an important aspect of our language. I think its time to post this again as its subject keeps cropping up on every forum

(murka) #16

hmm, a 8 year old came to our vent serv when we tried to do taxes, it was so impossible, it doesn’t destroy eardrums, it makes u laugh hard.

VOIP in BF2 worked great. Best implementation in-game as of yet.

VOIP in BF2142 sucks from what I can tell. Not sure why it sucks so bad, but it is generally used less and sounds like dung.

Ventrilo rocks if you have a group you are playing with. Go Vent Go.

Teamspeak seems clunky compared to Vent but is okay…

I would prefer that every game have ventrilo-esque quality features built in so that everyone can communicate without having to get the extra software, but so be it.

(Ifurita) #18

Odd that the implementation quality would be so different in BF2 vs BF2142.

(SCDS_reyalP) #19

Mumble is a pretty nice free/open source alternative to vent. The voice activation is a bit quirky, but the rest seems to work pretty well.
