Will DLC see a rise of players on PC?

(riptide) #21

I will definitely be checking out Red Orchestra 2… a game that all started as a mod. However I must point out that it will have quite a different feel than Brink… and even what we expected Brink to be. So much that I don’t think it will have that much of an effect.

(Je T´aime) #22

I doubt Red Orchestra2 will be a big title, all the core ideas from it reminds me batelfield, and batlefield3 looks a lot better.

(Impulse_) #23

wrong… It looks more like original call of duty. The game is going to be heavily competitive friendly with there sights on taking the #1 spot for competitive FPS game… From the looks of things right now, Red Orchestra 2 is going to be red hot for anyone who plays games competitively.

(Codine) #24

It will spike for a few days, but after the hype dies out the game will be done for good. It’s a shame that I still can’t play this game with a stable frame rate.

I’ll probably uninstall after I attempt to see what this new dlc is like.

(Steinernein) #25

Red Orchestra is too niche to be top anything but in its own category.

The DLC will bring life back for maybe a week and then it’ll drop and be the same.
of course there will be a small boost of players. they will probably even try out the new maps a couple of times.

but if they see, nothing really changed, especially not the things that let them go away, then they will go away pretty fast again.

after a while the playerbase will probably shrink even more. some people are still here just because they wait for the dlc and hope it will be their messiah.

it will not, though. adding something like a new gamemode, lets say, deathmatch, would probably attract more people. that would be the messiah i am waiting for.
I liked Brink from the day I was able to play it(wich was 10 days after I received it. Brink related hardware probs). But as I’ve allready mentioned, its getting more boring from day to day. Two of the major problems that Brink has are, The objectives are allways the same and they are also bound to a specific map and second, you are totally dependent from your teammates. Wich is theoretical a great thing but in reality that means half of your team isn’t playing cooperativly and the other half are bots or soon to be rage quiter.

DM and TDM would be the easiest and quickes way to keep or even gain the player base. After that achievement SD should focus on new missions for the existing maps(DLC maps included). You can tell different storys with the same, allready existing maps, without destroying the main storyline.

I’m tired of hearing “Oh, Necheyev is down” and “Neycheyev is up” or “They repairing the crane, stop them”. When I look at myself while playing a mission the 89 time I feel like I’m a little bit retarded, or like one of those mice wich where tested in one of those mazes.

What was SD thinking when they thought about Brink’s long term future? Where they really thinking, that we are so simple minded that we wouldn’t have a problem to play the same objectives for years, over and over again?

What a sad and ironic fate that would be for this game.

The two games couldn’t be more different - have you actually played the original? I’ll be looking to get both, but for two completely different experiences. RO2 will be excellent - but it is, as pointed out, a niche game. It’s hard, unforgiving, and not at all tempting for the vast majority of mainstream players. And that’s exactly the way it needs to be  It’s a unique experience, and no mainstream game will offer anything like it - because the masses simply see it as “dumb and restrictive”. If people don’t like it (and many won’t) that’s fine - but many also don’t understand it, which is a shame. Realism isn’t for everyone, but if you DO like it - RO2 will be a great experience for sure.

(nick1021) #28

Like most people would rather stick with CoD then Quake Live. Because Quake is too hard for them. (And it sure is =/)

People are saying RO2 and Brink are nothing alike and that is true but you have to remember that a lot of people came into Brink expecting it to be different as well hence why so many people felt let down.

RO2 will feature a WW2 setting like Wolf ET, Vehicle and infantry combat similar to ETQW/BF although more inline with BF.

The point is at the moment I believe there are people out there like me who just want a well developed PC game which will be supported by the developers. RO2 will be PC only, supports dedicated servers and the developers have said the SDK will be released on launch. The shooting and fighting style in the game is completely different to what I have experienced in an FPS as it is very realsitic but I can get over that and I bet many others will do the same if it means playing a well developed and supported PC game.

Thats the problem, its hard to stay positive about Brink when the DLC will likely split the community once you have to pay for it and there are new games on the horizon.

Not only is Red Orchestra 2 having an SDK from day 1. They took the top mod teams from RO1 and gave them early access so that we will have mods on release or shortly after. We won’t have to wait like we do with other games that release the sdk,

(Patriotqube) #31

I really hope so

(coolstory) #32

Indeed, also RO2 is PC exclusive. Not a dumbed down console port.

(dazman76) #33

Ooooo, I only just spotted this! RO2 will be released on August 30th - can’t wait

(nick1021) #34

It has my attention. I was going to get RO1 but not a lot of people are playing that.

(Azev2000) #35

They also started as a mod team just like Splash Damage. Tripwire just has not forgot about there roots and has not been blinded by dollar signs. There just happy to be making money doing what they love. They are a very rare breed. That is why we must support them in everything that they do.
I think you will see a rise in players but really the question that we are all interested in is how long will they stay around for. At the moment though I am very frustrated at the lack of real support from SD.

We still don’t have any word on whether we will ever get hold of the SDK and Server Admin tools remain as limited as ever. With the notion of Paid for DLC in the future I think its a safe bet to say we will never see the SDK. What makes matters worse is no support for Linux servers.

Another problem is that I am based in the UK and as we know UK players at the current moment wont be able to access the DLC which means I could potentially have to purchase it which I wont do.

Brink currently has around 700 people at the most playing each day and it is now rumored that the DLC could be introduced as late as 30th of July, for a lot of people thats just way to late. Maybe SD don’t know it but Red Orchestra 2 is scheduled for release in August and that game is PC only, will have dedicated servers and the SDK is going to be released from day 1. Already it looks like it will be a better launch.

If SD don’t sort things out very soon then I think it will be too late although at the moment with how let down I feel I think it already is too late.
whats this about UK issues? im in UK on steam too… why wont we be able to get the DLC?

Hi everyone, I’m new to the forums here and found this thread when searching Red Orchestra 2. I’m a Tripwire dev, but I’m not here to start a fight or anything. But occasionally I do need to venture out and make a post on forums like this if I see something factually inaccurate. Just an FYI some people are saying that Red Orchestra 2 is going to be a very niche game. First I just wanted to point out the the original Red Orchestra (including its mods like Darkest Hour) now 5 years after its original release actually has as many or more peak players than Brink currently does. Most days it peaks at between 800-1000 right now. So even RO1 if its beating Brink 5 years after release can’t be too “niche”

The other thing I wanted to mention was that RO2 was made from the ground up to be a MUCH more accessible game than RO1 while still retaining the core elements that the fans of the original RO loved. It is still definitely a tactical shooter, and focused on realism, but it is a much easier game to get into and play. It will have a pretty broad appeal when it comes out. So even if RO1 was too hardcore for you, hopefully you’ll still give RO2 a shot.

Finally, I’d just like to say I really enjoy the stuff Splash Damage makes going way back. I haven’t gotten a chance to play Brink yet because we’re all working like crazy to finish RO2 over here. But I’m looking forward to checking it out when RO2 is done.

We can’t get to the Steam store page for Brink. It’s blocked saying “That item is not available in your region” and has been since launch day. Pre-orders were able to get teh game from Steam but no PC player in the UK has been able to buy it on Steam since.
Rumour is that Bethesda cut exclusivity deals with the highstreet stores to disallow Steam sales in the UK.

Now this would be fine if it was just the Brink page but if you search for Brink the store page doesn’t appear and all the video pages (interviews, trailers, chior of guns) are also blocked.

Since the DLC is effectively a “subpage” of the store page it’s likely that it’ll be blocked too. Which means that we might (if it’s released on disc) be able to get it from the highstreet stores. I really do not think they’ll be handing out free copies there so we’ll be paying for it or not getting it by the look of things.

EDIT: someone linked this on the first page:
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/06/24/brink-dlc-will-be-free-for-two-weeks/
The important part being this:

(We asked about why it’s not on Steam in the UK, incidentally, and got a “no comment”. It seems to still be missing, so that remains an oddity.)

(dazman76) #39

If it turns out the free DLC isn’t available to those of us who bought it via Steam, that’ll be the last I play of Brink. Not because I really want the DLC, but because they shoudn’t have *****ing sold the game on Steam in the first place. It was up there for something like 8 or 9 months for pre-order? If this happens, I personally hope Lulzsec get wind of it and inflict more pain on Bethesda. For pulling this stunt and remaining completely silent about it, they deserve all they get. Maybe they could hit the Brink PC stats site too? Oh that’s right - a good month after it went live for console players, it still doesn’t exist for us PC idiots. Grrr. I’ve been looking forward to this game since ET:QW went “quiet”, and what a let-down it’s been so far.

(zenstar) #40

I agree with you here. If I can’t get the DLC on Steam then something very special will need to happen for me to continue playing.
Bethesda has really Fragged me off with how they’ve handled things here. I feel sorry for SD. I actually may not even pick up Rage because it’s being handled by Bethesda and I’ve just lost all interest in dealing with them even though I <3 id and really want to see what the tech5 engine has in it.

sad sad panda.
