Will DB be played on VAC secure servers?

(bubblesKeyboard) #1

Or will it be supported by VAC in any way?

(TheNinth) #2

There’s Xigncode already :D

(B_Montiel) #3

Both are p00p. Both won’t detect fairly cheap-made generic UE3 cheats and won’t detect abusive tweaks. Some time ago, they told they were studying opportunities to change the anti-cheat, mainly to use VAC… Dunno if it’s still a hot topic. I really hope they are going to find some side-party system that is worth.

VAC is pretty good… it keeps hackers out of CS:GO very actively

(srswizard) #5

I come from a shooter with a garbage anti cheat system, so whatever anti cheat they end up using with DB, I hope it works.
Uncertainty about cheaters is one of the worst things in multiplayer shooters.

Anti-Cheat systems are just checking your memory for known bit pattern. These pattern are very unique. I believe VAC is checking for 16 - 32 hex codes (for example: 0x04ef6e2102598adc53) where every sign stands for 4 bit. It cant detect self programmed cheats as they aren’t spread to far (2 - 3 people using it). It is a pretty accurate system since it has total memory knowledge and will kick u if any memory is corrupted or not readable for it. There are just a few working bypasses that are changing the data for the hack from time to time. One negative aspect i really hate about it are the delayed bans, if a hack is detected by Valve and the unique pattern is programmed into vac it will just set a “flag” on accounts that used this hack and will ban them in a month or even later so that most of the players using that hack are banned!

Does it really take that long? I have seen ban waves received within weeks and in CS:GO I’ve seen people banned on the spot

EDIT: People being banned on the spot may be Overwatch bans

Nah overwatch bans will need quite long to take effect since it needs a lot of reports till the case rises in priority.

If u use a banned tool u will get an instaban but if a “new” tool is found they will just flag every hacker invisible as one and then ban them together in one “wave” after that one wave everyone using this tool will get a ban.

I think those who get directly banned are those who use it repeatedly without caring and possibly who have already been reported through overwatch (even though valve is not giving a lot of credit to their own system, overwatch is in beta state for quite a long time now).
I’m not giving credit to VAC due to the massive number of cheaters you can see in some the games where it runs. I stopped playing cs:go after getting bored of seeing clear cheaters in at least 1/10 of every ranked match I played (not assumptions, clear obvious cheating you can easily notice by watching the recordings). Enormous player base means enormous cheaters base I admit, but it’s even more unbearable. And I felt like valve was taking it rather lightly. Even in the comp scene where no strong measures were taken to reinforce anti-cheat security except banning the already caught players.
And it’s definitely not working nicely with UE3 engine. In chivalry (VAC protected game) I’ve numerous people tweaking their local files ending having slight speedhack advantages on their moving speed and animations. And they never got caught.

Using Minecraft server custom anti-cheat practices you could reliably make something that detects out of the ordinary behaviour and cancels it, but that’s only for the silliest hacks like trying to fly or noclip, or slight speed changes.
Dealing with aimbotters is tough, even Valve recognised this, with CS:GO’s Overwatch handing the responsibility to players, since there’s a point where software isn’t going to be able to tell the difference between someone’s script and a real player.

its ok, sinnen is playing ow not db

(bubblesKeyboard) #12

Well hopefully the one we use works. Last thing we need is a bunch of KQLYs

(Nail) #13

xigncode has proven to be slightly unreliable so far (total poop)

(bubblesKeyboard) #14

There are many hackers in SF2, a game that also uses this. They also use punk buster too…

(Nail) #15

little off topic but I can’t believe p00p is still censored

(sageCarrot) #16

the only good thing about vac is the threat of getting vac banned, the anticheat itself is pretty shit

(Meat) #17

yeah I can’t believe it, P00p is probably one of the least offensive words I use in my every day vocabulary at work.

I been known to say “I am so happy I could P00p” rather often at work, when I am faking enthusiasm.

(B_Montiel) #18

What I love with forums with auto-censor system is that, in the end, everyone will be talking about p00p (or cr4p or whatever f3c3s) in a quite recurring manner. This completly defeats the purpose of such a robot.

This makes me think (bounce back to the topic), whatever the anti-cheat system you will choose, there will be leftovers whatever you do. As long as they are foiled rapidly (through anti-cheat or reports…), that’s fine. Maybe a classic p00py anti-cheat for casual games is enough. Let’s just hope there will be reinforcements is the eventual comp scene.

Exactly! you wont be able to ban every cheater on earth. But the community got to hold strong. Remember… We got kickvotes for days. We got motivation to put into Dirty Bomb. We got us. We got the community!! and a great game, thanks to the community and the devs!!

I’m hoping to see a custom anti-cheat for DB. Perhaps taking advantage of SD’s ‘echo’ data collecting tech, which can already easily spot the most obvious and annoying hacks. Not sure how it’s all going to work, but I’m pretty confident they will do a better job than most F2P.
