Whyyyy am I so bad at Dirty Bomb?

(newfangledKeeper) #41

I watch higher level players on youtube/streams. Watching them play helped me figure out how the game works.

don’t know if this has been pointed out but mouse accel is not completely set off, you only realize it if you’re using relatively high sens it seems.
this helped me a lot http://forums.gamersfirst.com/topic/226344-mouse-accelerationdampening-fix/

Pft, mouse accel is based.

…Probably not this one though.

i don’t understand that xD

at OP: also don’t use VSYNC if you do and if you have a beast pc consider disabling OneFrameThreadLag

Just try not to fret, try to have fun. If this is your first FPS game when and if you play others the skills you learn here will put you in a great place, Dirty Bomb requires a good deal of discipline to excel at

(Ghosthree3) #46

Mouse acceleration can be great, but this implementation is probably not. I use a mouse accel driver based off Quake’s.

Here’s a quick test to know if your sensitivity is okay:

Do a QUICK 180 degree turn and shoot behind you. If you undershoot or overshoot that 180 degrees, adjust your in game sensitivity until you do an almost perfect 180 spin. You’ll notice everything starts to “feel” right when you can do a perfect 180 with your muscle memory.

Higher sens, lower sens, it’s ALL PREFERENCE. Do what works for YOU.

Another tip:
Always aim head level. This goes for any FPS game. If you play a lot of third person games you will tend to aim at the ground. By aiming already at head level, there is less to adjust when you come across an enemy.

(Ghosthree3) #48

There is a down side for aiming for heads. While it is absolutely better if you can land very consistent very quick headshots, aiming at head hight makes hitting in general higher, and if you can’t maintain a good enough hit rate you’ll end up doing less than just going for torso level.

My advice is, try the mercs, pick the one that suit you the best and stick with it. In my case i’ve accepted i’m complete sht with anything other than Vassili so i stick with Vassili and it’s beastly FEL-IX.
Once you find your merc and stick with it it’s only a matter of time before k/d and score improve.

  1. Play the game, you will pick it up eventually, kinda like learning how to ride a bike, once you get it you never forget.
  2. Find out how you learn, may seem weird but everyone learns differently, some people learn better from visual experience, other from reading words, and even others learn just from listening.
  3. Get comfortable, don’t keep switching your settings, pick something and stick to it.

(RuleofBooKz) #51

id recommend the new player take a meditative stance towards such a FPS game. A vow of silence might also assist in betterment at the game

(immenseWalnut) #52

A tip worth trying is to lower your sensitivity, grip your mouse tightly and lock your wrist (moving the mouse with your elbow). Most rookies make the mistake of playing with too high a sensitivity and spamming their shots with poor accuracy. Instead you want to focus on tight control of your crosshair and only pulling the trigger when you are on target.

It will take some practice, but once you start getting used to it, your speed will increase. Aim first, then fire, instead of constantly firing and trying to aim afterwards.

(DucklingJuggler) #54

Mouse, sentivity etc will only get you so far. It won’t automatically make you better at aiming just by changing it, if anything it’ll take a while to get used to the change. The only thing that will make you better is playing. Practice aiming while moving around. If you find yourself spraying and praying alot, try to make an effort to not shoot until you actually have the crosshair over the enemy. Focus more on the aiming and less on the shooting.

Starting off you’ll probably die alot because you take too long to aim properly, but you get faster and faster at it until it’s part of your muscle memory. Apart from the aiming, if you find yourself dying alot, try to figure out why. Is it because you rush in too fast and get caught in a bad spot? Also try to flank and outplay your enemy.

You might be simply not as good at FPS games as others. Dirty Bomb is much faster and has a higher skill level than popular mainstream shooters.

Still it is strange you struggle so much. I have seen people playing medics with 3/20 or similar Kill death ratios topping the score board simply because they are reviving and healing like mad.

I would have to see you play to actually say what’s wrong. I only suspect you aren’t playing your mercs to their maximum efficiency and don’t go after the objective hard enough.

It might be you rush into action too, but because you aren’t quick enough / good enough at aiming you die before you score some points. In that case I would suggest playing as a support guy and stay behind a line of friendlies so you never become the first target. Drop ammo, call in artillery / airstrike on the objective, heal, revive (Spark would be good here on maps with more space) and generally support those who are better at the shooting part. It might be after a while you pick up.

What’s your average accuracy, K/D, SPM in games like Battlefield for example? Dirty Bomb doesn’t make it easy to produce any reliable stats.

(Hexa) #56

in case you say tl:dr
Don’t fall for tech talk, for as long as you keep continuous 60fps and dont use cheap Tesco’s mouse you’re good to go. While obviously higher FPS and quality Mice helps a lot, it’s not what makes a good player.

Let’s start with that… It is your first FPS you have ever played, which means you have no experience in FPS games. Even when you play against so called ‘casual’ gamers those are often people who played other games, you’re not a rookie… You’re lower than that, you’re like a baby who’s learning to walk. Please don’t take it as an offence because that’s not meaning behind those words.
Think about it this way, majority of players who are attracted to dirtybomb are people who yearn for oldsql play, which means quite will have experience in games and even if they’ll be new to dirtybomb, it’s likely that over years they spend 3000+ hours in other shoters like COD, CS, Quake, Team Fortress and what not, when you compare it to mere 220 hours it’s nothing.

You don’t have that advantage, and that’s ok… everyone has to start somewhere, but you chose yourself quite difficult game as for begineer

Regarding your settings, i myself play on 800 dpi, standard windows sens and 6.5 in DirtyBomb, that’s down purely to your own opinion and don’t let people bullshit you that your sensitivity is wrong, all that matters is that You feel comfortable with it because YOU are the player.

If you want real tips to get better then those are all that i can think of for people who are new to games:
-Don’t underestimate sound, it gives you edge on your opponents position. While DB is more combat oriented than Counter-Strike, use thise advantage as it’ll allow you to to get those few initiating shots.
-Don’t ever stop, it’s easy to compensate aim for your movement and you can also use movement as an aim support, in the same time it makes you more difficult target.
-If you know that you’re not very good aimer, try to outsmart your opponent… Use movement to get on top of him or jump behind, you know what you’re doing and you can compensate for it… but he’ll be confused.
-Find your role then understand it, if you have squishy character, it’s not your task to kill this rhino who’s camping at the corner.
-Turn on hit beeps in audio settings, this will give you brief idea on how much you’re actually hitting, not how much you ‘think’ you’re hitting
-Aim for heads, bigger damage… it is quite difficult but necessary if you want to stand chance against better opponents.
-Make sure that your mouse mat is big enough so you can do 360’ spin
-Try to stay calm, people who are irritated tend to play worse(know it after myself)
-Make sure you use your class well, playing skyhammer? use your grenade to indicate chaos in room. Playing nader, use your grenades to flush out opponents hiding behind cover or block their routes of escape. Playing Arty, use your range. Playing sniper, put spotter in key position so you know when enemy’s coming at you.
-Don’t just play maps, learn maps… think of where opponents can hide, common spots for camping or sentry turrets. I’m playing nader, 3/5 times someone is hiding behind desk on underground first bomb
-Make sure you use static crosshair and just learn recoil via experience, it’s easier to aim with simple dot than large cross cross expanding to half of your screen
-Find people that you want to play with, it’s just better to not be left alone to carry your team
-Think of your actions, you’re not experienced enough to do everything natively.
-And last but not least… Just keep playing and you’ll gradually keep getting better, not instantly, you won’t suddenly see the difference, but things will slowly change, your K/D and W/L ratio will rise… all that it takes is time and experience.

Oh, there’s one more thing that people seem to underestimate a lot: “Confidence”
Don’t be afraid, come at everyone as if they’re worse than you and just outshine them with confidence, it’s all in your head really…
It’s easy to kill player who fears you, tries to run away, exposes his back; but when someone comes at you with his guns out it becomes fight not a bully. At the same time, when you fear that player will die, you try so hard that you’re stressing, this causes your crosshair to run into wilderness, overall panic that might cause you to switch weapon to early, etc.

That’s all I can think of, those are general tips really… nothing to do with “play like this and you’ll be pro” but all things that seem obvious once you hear them.

Changing settings doesn’t magically make you a great player, all you can do is practice especially since this is your first FPS.

I think you’ll encounter quite a few people that have a background in FPS games and mainly in Quake,RTCW,ET etc. Which are in my opinion some of the fastest games.

Find the settings and merc that you’re comfortable with and keep practicing. I played ET a lot and when I started out in that game, I was the worst. It took me a while to understand that I had to keep moving around, because if I didn’t, I’d be dead.

I’ve only started playing but I get the feeling it is sort of the same in this game, a lot of the time you have to keep moving when you’re in a fight.
