Whyyyy am I so bad at Dirty Bomb?

(activeClip) #61

Just so you know most people with 800dpi use closer to 5 sensitivity in game then 10. If your level 15 and you are on the low end of the scoreboard i would bet 9/10 times your aim is sub par, that or very rare case that your playing your chosen merc terribly wrong giving you no real chance.

I am in a bit of a similar situation as you OP, Planetside 2 was my first FPS in a decade and after 1000 hours of playing it I would only rank me as a “decent” player, after moving over to Dirty Bomb from PS2 I found myself to get absolutely dominated once I left the newb servers.
Its not until now, 50 hours or so into the game when I more often than not walk out of a game with a positive K/D.

The single most important advice I can give you or anyone who tries to get into FPS games is, everytime you die or fail, stop for a few seconds and think over what it was that you did wrong and what can you do differently next time a similar situation occurs.

Most FPS “gods” I have met or gotten to know these last years as I got back into gaming all have one thing in common, they all have 10s of thousands of hours of experience in these games.
And facing these players with only a few houndred hours of experience under your belt will obviously end in your loss. But by always looking for what you did wrong and what you can improve will advance you further as a player.

I’m overwhelmed by the amount of responses I’ve received that I’m not really sure where to begin! But it was a good idea of me to seek a little wisdom here on the forums. You’ve all been extremely helpful and insightful and I’ve read every single post. I’ve taken notes, made some adjustments, and above all will work on being more patient with myself on learning.

Going to answer a few questions…

90% of the time, I play Sparks. Since I’m not a good shot, I try (TRY… I tend to get the urge to Rambo, attempting to resist it) to hang back out of the action as much as possible, and support my teammates by keeping them going and letting them do the hard part. I do use Fletcher when I need to grind for XP though… but yeah I get what you’re saying.

My gaming partner that’s a big-time FPS veteran would agree with you. Reflexes… god. I neeeeeed those reflexes and spidey-senses! I just don’t have them yet, not even a little bit. But I’m working on it. I’ll try not to force it though, I guess I have been doing that a lot lately… I play in just the regular servers. I’ve had some enjoyable experiences in min level 10 and some of the worst experiences, so it just depends on my mood. 90% of the time though, just regular.

I have a Razer Hex Wraith mouse. 5600 max DPI. Right now I have it on 800/1000DPI with 1000hz polling rate. In-game I keep my sensitivity between 5-10. I adjust depending on the merc and their movement speed, hoping it’ll help but I haven’t found my comfortable spot yet. I’m investing in a new mousepad soon. What do you recommend?

Very good point about tweaking my DPI and such. I probably do it way too much in trying to find the ‘right’ spot. Trying to stick with 800 since that seems to be the popular choice. And thank you for the links! Bookmarked and very useful.

Mentioned my level to demonstrate time-spent, not skill. I completely lack skill so I know level has 0 to do with it.

I do really like DB, but it’s kind of embarrassing when people will say “you suck for your level!!” and “you’re terrible at this!!!” I try not to let it get to me, but I do desperately want to improve, of course. You’re definitely right that DB is hectic as fuck and is very overwhelming. I like the fast pace of it, I just hope I can learn to keep up with it better. I may try CS:GO since a lot of veteran FPS’ers play it or CoD… but yeah, I’ll work on stressing a little less about it. Thank you for your thoughtful response!

I’m bad to want to rush in and then I get rekt, but it’s something I’m working on. The fact Sparks can die from a stiff wind alone is enough to encourage me to stay as far back as possible. I still get rekt, but a long distance healer has greatly improved my gameplay, even though I’m still just not quick enough to keep up with everyone else yet. As for my average accuracy or k/d… I really have no idea my ratios and such. I’ve only really played one shooter besides this and it was a third person, and didn’t have reliable stats either. I was good at it though, but it was a struggle in the beginning too.

Gonna need to break this into a second post! You all have been SO helpful. I did not expect this sort of response at all. The wisdom here is very valuable, not to just me, but I’m sure a lot of others starting out. THANK YOU!

This was definitely not tl;dr! It was extremely helpful, and I greatly appreciate you taking the time to give all of these tips. The wisdom is very useful to not just me, but anyone that might be asking the same question I am ("why the fuck do I suck!?). I didn’t take any offense at all and I know I’m an extreme newbie to the FPS world. A lot of people have echoed what you’ve said about that, and I guess I didn’t realize that the pool of players in DB are probably… mostly veterans of FPS games to some degree. I’m in over my head for sure, but I’m going to keep at it! I found your post very useful and will apply your tips to my gameplay. If I could give it fifty 'insightful’s I would! :relaxed:

My aim is definitely sub-par! LOL People have been suggesting to aim more for the head than body shots though, so I’m working on getting the habit for that. Did that more yesterday for all my matches and my k/d went up over what it usually is. I mean, it shows I’m REALLY new to FPS when it didn’t occur to me before to shoot more for the head… granted, the only other shooter I’ve played (third person), headshots didn’t matter. lol.

Thank you all again for all of your responses. There’s a wealth of knowledge here from people who clearly know a lot better than I do, and I feel much more motivated than I did before. I’m going to use the tips here and keep at DB, and hopefully… eventually! I’ll get to where I want to be skill-wise. I really do enjoy this game, but it does get extremely discouraging… but, I’ll just take it easy for now and do my best.

ah. So that was a big write up.

You know apart from being a cheeky no good bunch of no hoping delinquents near do well jay walking rebel soft cock wind blowers, the regulars of FPS, and this type of FPS in particular (Et QW RTCW), genuinely love the game. Deep down that is. Deep down like where they hide their gold. Tell no one.

So these veterans and regulars really do want to encourage new players, good players, to step forward and try it out and get more ppl playing the game that is faced paced obj based FPS.

Not the bads tho - they can fuck off

i guess because your enthusiastic u will get a pass? keep ya chin up

@hiddenSpring

If you didn’t already know, you can bring down the console in-game with ` key and type switchlevel followed by a map name and roam the maps yourself. Good for learning jumps.

This is nice to see. Thank you all for being so helpful and excellent to each other.

Such a wonderful community, reminds me of SMNC.https://media0.giphy.com/media/bg4pMH02w4Tx6/200_s.gif

Anyways this probably doesn’t help you much but I found my aim improved a lot when I started using the Dreiss, since spamming body shots with that is a lot less successful than with most other weapons. It forced me to start opening engagements with headshots and I think it has carried over to other weapons for me. Sometimes a less forgiving gun is useful in training yourself on where to aim, just my two credits.

Don’t be frustrated that you are not “good” in an FPS game after 220 hours. Coming from counter-strike which I have played for about 1600 hours, Dirty Bomb seems kind of easy. Playing one of the hardest FPS games out there really helps with this one, considering the bullets are completely accurate and you can jump while shooting. FPS games take muscle memory and reaction time to become a high level player, so it will just come in time. Dont worry

I have removed the comment as i had nothing else to contribute.

Yes, everything has been described pretty good.

I just wanted to add that most people use the medium size dot.
Also, you could try and put it in pink as it helps to see.
