Whyyyy am I so bad at Dirty Bomb?

(scrub_lord) #21

That’s why. Basically every other player has more experience than you here, most with years of gameplay under their belts. You have a lot of practicing to do to catch up. You can’t expect to be topping the charts all the time if you just started.

I can understand that this can be frustrating and matchmaking is still incredibly flawed for most games, making it even tougher on newer players. Dirty Bomb is also not the most newbie friendly shooter either. It emphasizes skill more than most other shooters to be honest (which is why I love it so much).

The best advice I can give you is to try and enjoy yourself and not get so absorbed in improving. Being focused on that aspect will only lead to frustration. Getting better will come naturally as you play the game.

Silly OP thinking a players level has anything to do with their skill at FPS

Play nader, complement that deathstreak with the press of the F button and see those scores… blow out of proportions.

Have you tried the antistrafe one? Tried it a couple of weeks back, never struggled so hard with something in my life.

I’m a bit older than most FPS players, and my K/D in this game is pretty bad, but I usually manage to be in the top half of the scoresheet simply by concentrating on objectives and the abilities specific to the class I’m playing. Take a look at the team makeup when you first join a map - if the team has no medics, play that class and concentrate on keeping your teammates alive. If no Skyhammer/Arty, play that and spam ammo packs and try to drop your airstrikes in a time/place that will be most effective. If no Nader… haha, just kidding. Every team has 3 or 4 Naders right now. Don’t be the 5th Nader on your team. Seriously.

I myself have been playing shooters since '93. It should go without saying that you’ll need time to get a proper feel for this style of gameplay. Will it take you 22 years to start topping the charts? Of course not. However, all of those years of experience do help, as they would with anything else. General shooter experience also only partially translates into how good you are with each individual game. The more you play shooters as a whole, the more you’ll learn to do things like properly controlling recoil and bloom. The more you play an individual shooter, the more you’ll learn how to take advantage of its unique features. Dirty Bomb, for example, has wall jumping and super jumping. It’s not necessarily the first game to have these features, but how these features function and how they are used will still change from game to game. So the more you play Dirty Bomb, the more you’ll realize, hey, I can jump over to that far off ledge or hey, I can wall jump up that pile of crates and onto the roof of that building. With that said, one of the most important things you can hope to obtain from playing shooters is building common sense for them. Depending on the kind of person you are, you’ll also want to start formulating strategies and tactics that fit you. If you have a low reaction time, learn to flank to avoid facing your enemy head on. If you have shaky hands, consider using shotguns or spray weapons instead of sniper rifles. There’s far more to it than that, but this wall of text should give you a general idea. B)

Play Skyhammer, he is the most average merc and not hard to learn. Also dropping ammo gives you a lot of XP during a game.

Practice headshots. Do you aim well? Maybe do the tutorial again and see how fast you down the targets?

Higher sensitivity is an advantage if you have a steady enough wrist

yeah, antistrafe is a tough one =)

(Ghosthree3) #32

I know of a few pros that have used high sensitivities - like based HAL_9000 - but they are few and far between. There’s no reason to try to do this if it’s difficult.

So many people could benefit from this advice when coming from other FPS games. ADS becomes something of a terrible habit from elsewhere.

(seashellPond) #34

Anticipation and positioning are your friend. Things you will learn playing for some more time the FPS genre. Its not all about having the best mouse or PC

(NeoRussia) #35

Movement is as big a deal as aim. When playing Vassili or 80 hp mercs you don’t ever want to be shot at. Whenever you get into a bad situation take your knife out and run / long jump out of there. At the same time always be in position to assist your team. If there is a medic with you, don’t be a huge puss and cower behind a crate, waiting for a med pack. Don’t run around the map more than you need to either.

I’m pretty sure that dpi & sens have nothing to do with this.
I played RTCW:ET before i started playing Dirty Bomb and i was low+.
I installed this game and the only thing i changed was my crosshair.
I’m always (read 95%) topfragger or highest xp when i play public.
For some people it’s better to sticking to the same settings and getting used to them, some people keep tweaking their settings and improve aswell.
You can try everything the people here suggested, it will either improve your aim or fuck it up even more.

For the merc part;
Playing Skyhammer gives you a lot of XP;

 • Throwing ammo down = +10 xp
 • Someone picking up ammo = 60 xp (a lot more if they are low on ammo)
 • Hitting a teammate with an ammo pack = +10 xp (direct hit)
 • damaging tank with airstrike = insane amount of xp (400 or even more)
 • killing people with a good airstrike = badges = xp
 • m4a1 (correct name?) is a good public weapon, even if ur aim isn’t that great.

If your aim really sucks and you lose most of your 1on1’s, try engi and fix tank or do obj or play medic and just follow the best aimer in ur team and revive/supply medpacks when needed. (also, steal his gibs, gibbing gives a lot of xp aswell!)

My first FPS was Quake 3. So I was dropped into the lion’s den for certain. DB can be nearly as hectic so you’ll have issues with it that you might not have had with other shooters that have fewer things going on and are a bit slower. But, once you learn, you’ll be an absolute beast at anything you touch.

There is a lot of good info in this thread from people so I won’t reiterate. But I do want to say that I know your frustration. It took me over a year to simply become mediocre at Q3 and eventually I broke through due to practice and study and quickly elevated after that.

So good luck and happy playing!

(prettyStake) #38

i’ve spent between RTCW, ET, and ET quake Wars around 10-12 years of my life to prepare for this game. Sure i have great games but i still pull off a crappy rounds more than i should.
The aim will eventualy come but positioning yourself in the correct spots is probably the most important thing. Just be helpful to your team and practice practice practice
I’m almost level 15, I’ve clocked 220 hours, and I’m still in the running for the Death Olympics. I feel like 9/10 times I’m in the lower 50% margin of the scoreboard. I feel like I bust my chops for such small scores. Even when I white-knuckle it for hours to the point my hands are in physical agony, it’s still a struggle.

I’m sort of at a point where I’m having to question if this game is right for me. It’s the first FPS I’ve ever played, but I think I should have started doing better by now…

I’ve done everything I know to do… I’ve got a Razer mouse and based on things I’ve read, I’ve changed my dpi to 800, ingame sens to 10, turned off accelerations/windows sens 6/11. I’ve tried merc after merc and spent a lot of money in the process. I’ve adjusted all my graphics settings and done everything I know to do, but I’m still struggling so horribly.

Anyone have any advice? Any tips?
Don’t think Im rude or anything, but some people just aren’t good at certain genre of games no matter how good your configs or your mouse is. I absolutely suck at RTS and I don’t mind admitting it, thats why I only ever play against bots in CoH. Since this is your first FPS perhaps give other FPS a go, if you still aren’t doing that great then maybe its time to admit you plain suck at FPS. And do remember I’m not trying to flame just being honest.

Are you having fun? That’s the only thing that really matters…
