Why steam is a bad idea

(CVIChEK) #1

Besides the crashes and connectivity issues, steam has an even bigger flaw.
Since you need to log onto your acc to gain access to your games, you need a bloody internet connection to play the singleplayer.
And this sux

Never had a problem with crashes and I’ve only had a couple times where Steam servers have been offline.

And no, you do not need to be connected to the internet to play singleplayer. Steam has an offline mode that allows you to play without an internet connection.

I’m guessing this is someone who hasn’t been on steam in years and has no idea the current state of steam…

(LyndonL) #4

This is a very old topic and has been done to death already.

Steam is simply a form of DRM in terms of needing to go online to unlock it. It’s definitely no worse than the RIDICULOUS Ubisoft DRM that reqs you to be online the entire time when playing.

Steam is a core part of the game (Same as XBLive and PSN for the other platforms) and as such it’s too late to do anything about it… about 2 years too late actually.

(CVIChEK) #5

Yeah, I havent been on for a long time, but how will you be able to use your char without net?

(LyndonL) #6

All things stored in the Steam Cloud are also stored in the local computer’s Steam cache. So once you connect up to Steam online again it will auto propagate to your online account.

(Nail) #7

only once to authenticate, then you can play offline no prob

(BrigandSk(A)) #8

I was convinced that you can install steam and Brink offline and if start steam in offline, and be able to play the game without a login and no connectivity just for singleplayer. XP won’t update because the game session is not attached to an account. To do this you you need the physical copy of Brink.

Would be nice if this can be confirmed

(Nail) #9

you must connect to internet when you install, that authenticates the game, then you can do as you please

(Auzner) #10

In this age having a computer without internet is pretty rare, especially if you’re into gaming. You’re a minority and are going to have to accept your state. This is the direction games have generally gone. Most areas where games are marketed and sold usually have citizens with internet. You have to have internet to even know about these new games. If your area also has printed magazines for games then there must be a strong enough market there already. This argument against steam is obsolete. This is almost like arguing that games shouldn’t require discrete graphics acceleration.

(LyndonL) #11

Games shouldn’t have 3D graphics cause it means I can’t play them on my netbook…

I’ll laugh my ass off the day steam become a non-free service, after it hooked the entire gaming community…

Saying “It’s like that, so get accustomed to it” is what makes our society sick nowadays.

But yeah, globalisation and centralisation is gud I think

Ontopic, I too would love a non freaking steam version, but it aint gonna happen

(Auzner) #13

You understand my point since there are plenty of people who would state something like that sincerely without knowing the implications.

They don’t even need to do that. Steam is not dying or going away. If it were it would not keep improving. Just like you, I don’t have any supporting facts for my side (or care to find any atm). But I think you’re misleading yourself if you dislike it based on that prediction.

Liar liar, pants on fire!
Crashes? Are you stupid? I’ve NEVER had crashes related to steam, connectivity issues? It’s steam problem you live under a rock? You don’t need an internet connection to play the game once you activated it (once).

Posts like yours make me think stupidity should be illegal and punishable by death.

Wow, the constipacy theorist. When steam will start to charge clients for money we will use other digital distributors. I am accustomed to Steam but I never had any problems or headaches in using Direct2Drive for example, or even Onlive once it spread more and latency issues become non issues.
And here, digital purchase is kinda the only option.

Oh, let me tell you a funny story with steam. When I bought Bad Company 2, I got it from D2D and when the Vietnam addon came, I bought it from Steam (yea, dumb idea, but I forgot where I got the main from). I asked nicely and Steam gave me my money back, even though they don’t do this regularly. Nice chaps if I may say.

(LyndonL) #15

It’s a valid concern but TBH I don’t think it’s something that’ll happen. Valve is not a public company so they don’t have shareholder tools pressing them to squeeze more money out (hence free DLC) and they’re making MUCHO dollars already anyway so I can’t see why they’d want to do anything to hurt what’s already working all too well.

No point upsetting the apples cart. <pun intended>

(Apples) #16

Oh its not really a conspiracy theory at all, its just how the world turn these days

I’m fine by not using it, I needed it for DoW2 but cant pass the (moar evil) GFWL stuff due to (the summum of all evil) .NET frameworks problem, dont ask me why I cant update my windows ^^

So yeah it’s becoming the norm now that we have multiple DRM and stuff to unlock before we can play a game we legally purchased, in my opinion this is a bad thing, as piracy never went that high anyway, so all this ****e is just a way to log consumers, collect data, etc etc.

Of course I dont have any hard evidences on that, it’s just my feeling.

Peace

Steam is not gonna be non-free service cause they really make more money this way.Steam actually treats very well its customers.I remember a false ban that occured in cod i think and the next day they gave all the banned users a free copy of left for dead 2.That is how you a company should do(What did sony do when the ps3 went off for its clock?,or ms which forces you to pay 60 bucks only to use its service)I prefer steam over anything else cause it has a chat, friendlist the ability to browse while playing without alt+tabing ,updates by itself ,steam cloud, the ability to login from another place and not enter your cd key to play, community servers etc.

Piracy ain’t that high?

I am currently in a room with about 100 people. I can count on my hand the ones the legally purchase software, and they all play computer games. According to them, I’m an idiot for purchasing games.
