Why so little gore ?

(RasteRayzeR) #1

I have watched many videos of W:ET these last days, and suddenly I had a disturbing thought

Why the heck in W:ET the players’ bodies can explode with all the members dispatched and gore everywhere, but not anymore in ET:QW, Brink, and DB ?

I mean with rocket launchers, airstrikes, artillery, mines, C4, etc. not only you can actually survive the blast in DB, but if you don’t you don’t even explode with it … I’m not looking for pure realism, but I’d like it to be exaggerated and fun like in W:ET.

Also in W:ET all these high explosives had 400 damage, meaning insta-kill. I hate when I see in DB players simply walking through my airstrikes and survive like nothing happened.

It’s because they wouldn’t be able to sell the game to a younge… no wait that can’t be right.

(Kl3ppy) #3

Is it really needed? I dont think so

(RasteRayzeR) #4

In my opinion yes, it is needed because it contributes to the fun and the general level of excitement you get during fights. I can remember asking myself the same question when I played ET:QW, then Brink, and now with DB …

Why no blood anymore ? Why can you step on a C4 charge and stay in one piece ? This is neither logic or fun.

With pretty much everyone complaining that DB is too linear, lacks fun or does not really attract you play more than a few rounds per week, I’m proposing this today because I know this would give me more pleasure when I play, give me a sensation of actual power. Because right now, unless you have a nuclear bomb, no one really die in DB :

Airstrike : you walk through
Artillery : you walk through with luck
Mines : you can avoid them, or even escape them
C4 : got to be suicidal or an engi to die on it
Guns : no real feeling of power (except Vassily’s sniper)

So the rare times I can get a kill with thoses, I wanna see them explode for good. This might be what you call a detail, but details make the whole.

p.s : it also solves the problem of knowing if someone is down or gibbed for all explosion kills.

Guess I’m a puss:( I don’t think it’d fit the tone of the game. It’s not AvP. There are two kinds of gore; Loadout’s and TF2’s comical kinda gore and AvP’s and Dead Space’s naturalistic kinda gore; None of those would fit the tone of DB. I think ragdoll is perfectly enough.

(RasteRayzeR) #6

W:ET is the same kind of game after all … yet it has body explosions. Does that not fit the game to you ?

And it’s not about making it “like in TF2”, or any other game. Stop looking at what all the other games do and try to picture it in DB, this is not how you get creative ideas. And currently the tone of the game is largely criticized by the alpha players, without mentioning that it may still change since it is still alpha.

These explosions were fun to watch in W:ET, brought some sense to the game and a feeling of power. The pubs will definitely expect to throw an airstrike and not see intact bodies after it. Otherwise SD should make a game where you can throw rocks at your opponents and rate it for 4 years old players.

I’m not looking for living room warefare, I want actual war

Lol, first you tell me I should stop looking what all the other games do/did, just to tell me in the next sentence, how awesome W:ET was in that regard. Kinda biased in your arguing.

(Dragonji) #8

I wanna have an option to buy gore pack.

(RasteRayzeR) #9

Let me rephrase :

  1. People’s bodies tend to explode if you put them under an airstrike, this is a logical and verified fact
  2. W:ET has airstrikes
  3. Players explode under an airstrike
  4. DB has airstrikes

So with 1 and 2 we deduce 3, but with 1 and 4, where 2 and 4 are the same argument, we don’t get 3, thus a contradiction.

I never said “do it like in W:ET”, I said it was fun and logical in W:ET, so why break this logic with DB ???

(RasteRayzeR) #10

This is an option that pleases me, and certainly a lot of pubs players …

(rUBBEN) #11

Member dispatched, sensation of power, you don’t need an access to he alpha but a good psychotherapist.

You played games like Wolfenstein ? Where you can electrocute dead bodies and watch them explode ?
You played games like CoD ? Where you can use an M249 in an airport and shoot down hundreds of civilians ?
You played games like Gears of war ? Where you can decapitate with you shield ?
You played games like BulletStorm ? Where you can throw your opponents on spikes ?
You played games like Diablo ? Where you can make cadavers detonate to kill your enemies ?

and you tell me that body explosions in DB would be too much, in a shooter game ? LOL

And ask yourself, why are these games so fun to play, why do you enjoy them so much ? It’s not because the flowers in game are pretty … it’s because you feel good when you can destroy your enemies and win the game.

maybe for you it is, but i like a solid story line for my games gore is optional or not even considered on my end , also that section in cod you refer was taken out of the game in a couple of countries because of it

C’mon dude, I play video games for the drugs and the biatches in the swiming pool soaking their bodies with le fresh french champagne (AND NOT BIATCHES LIKE ASHOG). And if there’s blood animations it will be disabled in the options in order to get some more fps.

<3 <3 <3 love for you <3 <3 <3

I just most recently thought about why actually games, nearly all of them, contain violence. It is an interesting question to ask. The new UFC presentation even claims that fighting is in our blood, yet i think there are differences per human, one is the Giraffe and just wants to eat leaves and foliage and the other is the lion, trying to **** up the Giraffe ^^

(Kl3ppy) #16

When I was 15 I wanted exploding dead bodies, exploding heads etc.
But now I prefer a clear hud, simple VFX and as rub said, high FPS. Everything is turned to low or to off in order to increase FPS

I’ve never ever played games for the sake of gore, BUT if it’s part of the IP I’d hate it if it would get cut out just because of some lame-ass rating system. Borderlands, AvP, Fallout 3, Dead Sace, Doom, Rage, Quake, etc., etc., are all games, wich, no one in his right mind would argue against, have to have gore in them. And it’s absolutely fun and legit, there’s no doubt about that. But I simply don’t see where gore would contribute anything to the DB universe. It wouldn’t, in any shape, or form increase my enjoyment of the game, that’s for sure. Of course, that’s only me, speaking for myself.

I agree, and violence somehow gives dynamism and popularity to the games, I enjoy killing in games. In DB I feel we lack response from the environment to our actions, and body explosions are one of these elements.

And if you can get stable 120 fps with the body explosions activated, what do you do ? And you have to consider the pub player, that will do exactly the opposite : full quality, lower fps rate.

I understand your point, but what’s the difference between these games and DB so that DB should not have blood and body explosions ? They all have guns, people you get to kill, explosive weapons, a great source of fun and goals to carry.

Globally I feel like most alpha players want DB to be made only for competition, and often fail to remain open-minded and consider the pub player who will, let’s notice it, be the real source of income for SD. The pub player part of me knows that if guns don’t look powerful and explosions don’t wreak havoc in an ostentatious way, I will be disappointed.

(rUBBEN) #20

ET:QW is a great game and there is no blood in it. I don’t get it, why do you keep associating bloog and violence with fun ?

If I understand well Kleppy’s post he meant that the sort of game you play often depends on your age, I doubt this needs further explanations. In my opinion blood is just a lame trick to add " fun " to a game wihout spending too much time polishing its actual mechanics. Blood is superficial and shallow, and only kids get fooled by it. If my memory is correct, samurai had made a super wall text denouncing the shallow sides of many games, saying that SD should get rid of it.
