In a perfect world I’d be all for FF. But this isn’t a perfect world and I don’t want to spend pub games dying to my team mates. It’s already infuriating enough when they can’t do shit to the enemy, when they end up killing me instead it might drive me to suicide.
Why no team damage?
No, this isn’t a military-sim.
Wait it isn’t? dang, we better remove all the weapons. Last time I checked england forbids most of them for non military/police personal
.
Next thing you are telling me is, that they invented friend/foe discerning bullets/explosives in those 50 years. And because of that we can’t have ff-on, the storyline dissallows it ^^.
Military sims are things like ARMA, Battlefield, Call of Duty, etc. They are meant to be realistic simulations of a combat environment. This isn’t. It’s a straight fps shooter with radically exaggerated abilities, like the Quake or Unreal tournament series.
You do realize that I was jesting right?
Anyways you are right It has its roots in Arena shooters like Quake and UT and just like those, it should come with the option of ff-on servers.
And maybe ff-on for competive play, because well it increases the skill ceiling, making it more uhm competive and stuff.
There was team damage in RTCW and ET. It worked fine. Now you can just throw couple of airstrikes or nades to objective and your teammates can rush in.
There was also a lot of restrictions on air strikes, panzers and other things that DB simply can’t do in those games. The reason? It’s hard to ask somebody to buy a merc then tell them they can’t use their abilities because somebody else already did or is already using that merc in pubs or even ranked matches. So you can do restrictions like those games had but there would definitely be some fallout from it.
Honestly, I would enjoy it if ranked started using FF On at some point (enough matches played or an opt-in or both) but on pub servers it would just be a nightmare. People would accidentally TK pretty often even if they knew what they were doing so having a system where a ban is issued after enough damage would suck. And a forgive system, while better, would still be pretty rough since it can quickly escalate without admin supervision (which won’t happen on DB servers since they aren’t community ran).
I’m good with just running scrims with FF On and playing with/against people who are 100% OK with it. I’m just not sure I’d play on pub FF On servers ever. At least not for quite a while until people knew what they were doing.
-edit- I just read what Szakalot said with ET:QW. I never played that game. It did seem a lot more open than DB from the videos I’ve seen. Was the game really that much more spammy considering the open terrain? And were most of the servers you played on a community server that had admins that were watching the goings on pretty closely (basically, a good way to deter/remove trolls)?
FF is a must for medic who played RTCW and ET for like a decade. So many times in dirty bomb i want to shoot a teammate at 2% health and to revive him so i can use my packs while there are gunfights

Answer is: yes
Of course it would be map dependent, but generally speaking majority of deaths in the game would happen from explosives. The best offensive tactic was to throw explosives at the enemy until they are all dead. Also the best defensive tactic, actually.
Guns had awful accuracy and netcode was pretty poor, so throwing a grenade would be a much more efficient way to kill an opponent.

My main reason is that people will not learn. It’s demonstrable in every match. We have to agree to disagree on this one
its demonstrable in every friendly fire OFF match that people don’t learn to play with FF on?
you got me there!

Nope. A not insignificant percentage of players in pubs do not heal, give ammo, always ADS, do group repair, etc etc. Just go to the pet peeve thread and read on, and on, and on. These are simple rules that they can’t fathom. If that’s not an indicator of how well FF would do in pubs, then there’s nothing that will convince you.
Separate lvl10+ servers with FF - fine, but this divides already not so big playerbase…

none of those things result in the person dying. If you run into airstrikes and die, chances are you will stop running into airstrikes.
Friendly fire in this game? considering how my teammates love to suddenly walk in front of me when i’m shooting, i would become a huge team killer, and beside that their are too many large aoe abilities to turn friendly fire on in this game (naders nades, airstrikes, laser beam thingy, etc)
Please keep friendly fire away from this game. FF only brings trouble and add nothing to the gameplay, except you kill the idiot teammate that went on your ironsight and you get raged on for that.
Don’t give ammo -> your teammates use secondaries and die -> you die.
Don’t revive -> no backup -> you die.
5 people repairing, zero cover -> you die.
Other people strafe way faster than you in a firefight -> you die.
“People will learn” - oh I wish it was true…
Of course, I would chuckle every time someone stands between me and me grenade launcher and drops on right at their backside.
Agreed… It can work…
But, ETQW maps were twice the size along with AI… made Arty spam far less a ‘hazard’ imo…
But none the less, FF should be active in DB. I cant see a valid reason why it isnt…

there is absolutely a way FF would work on this game.
ETQW had 3 times as much spam, and somehow the game didn’t turn into a ff-fest with FF-on.
People just need to get used to the proper style of playing, been spamming for so long, they forgot what its like to play the tactical side of things.

I would like FF On options and I’m sure when we get priv server support we’ll have them. But there are quite a few reasons I can come up with, despite myself being a supporter of FF On, as to why SD would choose to keep the game FF Off for pub situations. In fact, I can think of a ton.
For all the people posting in this thread that says they would like it on you can bet there would be hundreds rage posting that people were TK’ing in their server or going off about how bad a player is and showing screenshots etc or how spammy the game is because people keep doing to FF. And also, how bad would the new player experience be if they ended up on an FF On server and started throwing out Skyhammer strikes on CD. Sure, they might learn…or they might just quit the game after getting yelled at a ton. All of that negativity is avoided with FF being Off for pubs.
Again, I’m all for having options (even in pubs) to turn FF On. But it’s not hard to understand why that is a particular headache that SD would like to avoid.

Traditionally FF servers for any FPS always had a TK limit before you were auto-kicked or banned.
