Why isn't my server showing up in the games server list?

All –

I’ve setup a new RTCW:ET server on our T1 line, but it doesn’t seem to show up in the “play online” list. Anyone know why? Here’s what I do…

  1. Launch ET
  2. Click the HOST GAME button
  3. Set the game type to “Internet” and configure the rest (24 players, no password, campaign, etc.)
  4. Click LAUNCH for a dedicated server

The game verifies that I want to run a dedicated server and I select YES, it exits, and brings up a console-type window that shows the game starting. It also gives messages about sending the “heartbeat” to the etmaster server at Id. I’ve attempted (from my computer and my brother’s) to find the game in the server listing, but to no avail. In fact, no one ever hops into the game! He and I can both connect straight to the IP address, however. Strange, no? Am I missing something? Do I need to open a port on our firewall for the “heartbeat”? Have I not configured something properly?

Much thanks (in advance).

yes, you have to open a port on the router.
usually port 27960 UDP.

Usually it takes time before the “Master Server” updates the list and includes yours.

People don’t like joining empty servers. So you’ll notice the first five to join will take a long time, and people will start joining more often as the server gets full

Also, If you are hosting on Cable or DSL, The ping you will be able to provide will be terrible compared to other servers running on T3 connections. So this will also cause people not wanting to join.

Best way to test is to tell a friend your IP and connect manually to your server.

Well… I think I already covered your suggestions. First of all, I’m hosting on a T1 line, so the PING should be pretty darn good. Second, I have port 27960 open ('cause I opened it on the firewall), but my brother and I were both able to connect direct to the IP address… so that should be fine, me thinks. Lastly, I’ve had this server running for two days now, so I would think that it’d have enough time to show up in the server list and for atleast 1 person to join, right?

I’m confused.

HELP!!!

+set dedicated 2

dedicated controls if your server will show up in the main server list. 1 not to show, 2 to show up. Wils

Also, make sure you don’t have any filters turned on. If you happen to have it set to not show empty servers then yours won’t appear since nobody has connected to it yet.

Servers with over 32 people also usually do not show up in game browsers like Pathfinder or Gamespy or q3plug. The ingame browser seems to pick them up as well as qstat and ASE. Pathfinder does show servers over 32, if I dont use a router. I was trying to get our (A2W’s) web server browser page to show the servers with over 32 people with q3plug. no luck. I wrote “mr. Q3Plug” last month and…

…it is probably due to the packet containing the player information getting too big when more than 32 players join a server. I have to look into how RTCW handles this case, probably by using a second packet. the next version of q3plug will contain a fix for this problem. …
