Why is ET a free stand alone anyways?

(Redqueen) #2

Don’t complain.

(ildon) #3

Originally it was going to be an expansion for RTCW, then it was going to be a standalone semi-sequel (or prequel or whatever), but at some point they decided that either the single player wasn’t going to work, or that it would not be finished within a reasonable amount of time or something, so it was canceled. But since the multiplayer was already pretty much finished, and they had already paid SplashDamage, Activision chose to release ET for free, probably to help carry the brand name onward, and to get good PR with gamers.

I’m probably slightly wrong, so anyone feel free to correct me or elaborate.

Don’t whine, i never would have gotten addicted to it as i am now if i had to pay :rocker2:

(ildon) #5

I fail to see how the original post could be interpreted as complaining or whining, I think the guy is just curious.

(puubert) #6

I think id pulled the plug because they wanted to concentrate on DooM 3. I’m not sure, but I think id themselves were doing the SP portion.

(chavo_one) #7

mad doc was doing the SP portion. I would imagine that the reason we have no bots in MP ET, is the same reason we have no SP ET.

(bacon) #8

I would’ve rather paid for it than just download it for free. That way you would’ve have as many tkers and other assholes, though that goes both ways…

(Kendle) #9

It’s free because there’s no single-player component. As explained (at length) in a previous thread a Multi-player only game only has incidental value, as opposed to guaranteed value, because it requires 3rd-party involvement, i.e. someone (else) to provide the servers on which to play. Short of providing the servers themselves ID had no option but to either bin it or give it away free. Thankfully for all of us they chose to give it away free.

(pgh) #10

and bacon?

I musta missed the part where Teamkillers and Assholes cant buy games too? :]

(evilsock) #11

yup, but you can always spot them in a crowd though - they’d be the ones blocking the doorway into ‘Game’ or nudging you in the back as you stand in line for the cash-teller.

(pgh) #12

I even had one guy steal my pants!!1

(Bongoboy) #13

Someone stole your pants? While you were playing a game? That’s TERRIBLE!

Yah, it was pretty much like ildon said.

I’d like to correct any impression that we made ETout of the goodness of our hearts. id and Activision paid us to. Just like they pay us to keep Atlantis off the maps and the Martians under wraps etc etc.

:moo:

(evilsock) #14

I knew it, just bloody knew it - I bet your all masons as well :open_mouth:

(pgh) #15

What about big Bin Laden? Could swear I see him hiding down in Oasis’s caves rustling around stealing dead nme’s MP-40’s… :<

(evilsock) #16

Well, you know that earthen ‘lump’ to the right of the exit of said Oasis tunnels ? (the second set after you’ve blown the old city wall) - it’s Bin Ladens new virtual hideout - yup that’s right - he’s been under our noses all this time. Now all the US have todo is create new legislation allowing them a legal right to have him extradited from ET’s Oasis map to Justice over @ Camp ‘X’ ray :open_mouth:

(zushiba) #17

It’s A great hook. If there was an Enemy-terrotory 2 I would buy it in a heart beat. so would thousands upon thousands of other people who are now hooked on it like crack.

(Mjolnyr) #18

I suggest you to write an e-mail to MadDoc Software and ask them about the bot AI scripts for ET…

I do believe that ET is cancelled, because bots cannot act as what they are expected to be in single player mode, thus the project is shrunk to a stand-alone free MP game only.

(DarkMatrix) #19

But I heard and almost saw a mod team making bot’s for ET.

(Mjolnyr) #20

Then you shall go to see some “previews” “pre-release interviews” (I remembered that Computer & Video Games, Ferrago, GameSpy have related articles).

The promised bot system in SP mode, is far more complex than current announced bot systems. What was expected in ET-SP, is bot with correspondent strategical moves, with basic comprehension to players’ commands & direction. In fact, the goal is very hard to achieve.
Cancellation isn’t the worst result for a game project. Remember the infamous “Daikatana” (that gave John Romero a really bad name)? In my memory, it’s the 1st FPS game with ambition to implement “smart bot” in gameplay, and everyone knows how it goes in the end. I do believe that Activision has made a right decision to cancel ET-SP’s release. Maybe, the originally planned ET-SP could be constructed due to future AI technology’s advancement, but since it cannot be done at this moment, it’s good to see Activision asserts their product quality and make a responsible decision.
