Why I'm Leaving DB (for now)

(hawkeyeguy99) #1

I didn’t think I was going to make one of these posts, but I’ve about reached my limit. I’ve been playing DB faithfully for about 6 months now and have racked up just under 300 hours in-game. That’s much longer than the MW2 I’ve had installed on my computer for 4 years. I love DB.

But I don’t love it anymore. Don’t get me wrong, I still love the gameplay, there really is nothing like it. But that’s been said a million times on here so I’ll spare you that. Here’s my wishlist for returning to DB:

  1. CONTENT - I’m done waiting for any sort of new content to be released, only to find out that again this week, “the top issues are team balance and lag.” Yeah no shit sherlock we know. When is CMM coming out? When will we get a new merc? When will we get a new map? Are there even PLANS to add more skins? What happened to the crafting system fix?
  2. HONESTY - I feel like I’ve been decieved. A LOT. I was excited when the weekly dev videos became a thing. They were talking to us for the first time and telling us what was going on. And then it turned into “Look at DB nation!”, “We’re aware about this.”, “Look at these same top reported problems.”, “We’re gonna test again.” What happened to honesty? Can you just please tell us what you are working on right now? I don’t care if it’s small, just tell us so we can know what to expect.
  3. PROGRESSION OVERHAUL - Make my hours worth my while. I don’t want to put 30 hours into the game and all I have to show for it is credits that I can’t spend and 20 leads. Give me something more to work towards.
  4. CRAFTING FIX - It sucks. I don’t want to use it. I should want to use it. I like skins. A lot. But this system literally makes me hate getting them.

I’ll stay on the forums cause I like you guys and you’re a great community, but until something changes I’m taking a break from DB.
I’d actually like your opinions on my reasons for leaving though, do you agree? Am I being silly? What do you think needs to change?

Best Wishes!
Hakweye

Well, I guess come back when the game suits you. Ive got almost 1700 hours in and I dont feel like Ive been lied to though I do agree the crafting system stinks. I like this game alot and I’ll play it because it is fun. It is very frustrating to play it on a pub because people play the game how THEY want to play it and not the way the devs meant it to be played. The same thing happened with ET. Splash Damage make some great games (or like Sagan said, the framework for a great game) and I think their games might be a little too complex for the k/d infatuated.

Your decision to leave is your decision. Why exactly should my opinion sway you one way or another? I think all developers may have shot themselves in the foot with this early access/open beta zeitgeist. In the past, games were accessible when they shipped. People today dont seem to understand development cycles and what the word “beta” means.

You are ultimately the master of your happiness. If the game is not enjoyable, then find another to play. I could never quite understand why people feel the need to tell everyone theyre going to stop playing and then ask people to convince them not to. I can say this much: all of you would certainly appreciate these games–bugs and all–if you were forced to go without them for awhile.

Good luck!

My main point in posting is to try to communicate my list of things I’d like to see changed. That’s mainly what I’m asking for opinions on. I’ve made my decision to take a break and will probably come back at some point in the future, but I just wanted to get a dialog started on these specific problems.

Agree.

We’re all thinking the same thing, but it’s basically at the stage where people either accept the game how it is or move on to something else.

I still enjoy the gameplay, so I’ll stick around as long as I do, but yeah you’re right. There isn’t enough going on so plenty of people are leaving the game and sadly recently way too many veterans have been leaving the game just because things are getting so stale.

Ranked still isn’t back, partying up in pubs still isn’t a thing, we have no idea when to expect a new merc or even when to expect Dockyard (do I remember reading December was the goal? We’ve heard nothing more about it so far so I’m going to take a wild stab and assume it’s going to be next year). We don’t know when the next CMM test is, we don’t know when the next proper event is & from the sounds of it this upcoming xmas event is going to be nothing but a let down. Trinkets - yay - I can barely contain myself.

All in all, we’re left with a whole lot of nothing to look forward to & we’re basically left in the dark about what is coming in the future, so it’s no surprise you feel the way you do.

I have no idea about numbers globally but my DB friends list is dying pretty slowly. Gone from hundreds to probably around 10 that play consistently now, so it’s getting lame pretty quickly.

Taking a break is always great for your mental health. Come back when the ‘beta’ tag is removed.

So a couple years then

i am just waiting for bigger balancing update, i just got bored of some stuff like thunder, phantom, bunny hopping and shotguns, it just annoys me that this stuff is here for soo long, i know its beta and SD, but still

On content, even Dome has been around for years, it feels like Execution was the only new content we’ve had since early Closed beta. Anyone that played from alpha or closed beta has seen it all, and just watched as the old content was drip fed back into the game at a snail’s pace.

There’s countless community ideas, but it seems like everything it still falling under the same “Soon™” joke.

SD said they’ve learnt from previous events, but then offer some silly trinkets as a Christmas event instead. Some of the previous events did make it feel like SD lied to the player base (among ludicrous droprates), but it recently seemed like they were making more of an effort to be transparent.
After putting Dirty Bomb on the back burner for Gears of War, I was almost certain that we’d get some cool stuff added to the game, but we’re all still waiting for new content or at least some quality of life fixes, from fixing spectating to casual matchmaking etc.

They said crafting was going to be addressed ages ago, even watched as many players quit over it, but they still haven’t changed anything about it. It can’t be hard to change and will please many players, but for some baffling reason it remains unchanged.

I have nothing but high hopes for the game, but it sucks to see something with heaps of potential slowly fading away. I really hope the upcoming ‘announcement’ changes things for the better, and I hope you want to return to the game sooner than later.

(hawkeyeguy99) #13

@bushyg What announcement? I hadn’t heard of any special announcement. Did I miss something?

(bushyg) #14

It might be slightly misconstrued, but SD’s CEO mentioned an upcoming announcement on Sagan on roid’s reddit post (which was similar to your post here). https://www.reddit.com/r/Dirtybomb/comments/5dh2qe/sagan_on_dirty_bomb_and_farewell_for_now/dae00af/

(hawkeyeguy99) #15

Oh that’s right. I’d read that post but that’s kinda old atm isn’t it? Like at least 2 or 3 weeks.

Challenge accepted.

The only reason I keep playing is for the gameplay. I almost quit after the Summer Squash and MOFO update made the game unplayable, but thankfully, I stuck around. As much as I love content, customization, and variety, I tend to end up playing those niche games for a long time.

I remember playing “Kuma Wars” (original version) for the longest time when I was younger. But then the computer I was playing it on broke and I stopped… Next thing I know, I get a new computer a couple years later and the game is abandoned. It had a decent sized player base, but they all vanished. The gameplay for that game was enjoyable and really satisfying. It’s a completely free game too, with tons of content, co-op, and a lot of customization. Wanna know what killed it? I wish I did! Haha. I believe it lacked progression as well as no new content and a flurry of hackers. It didn’t have much advertising so it struggled to gain and then retain new players.

Thankfully, with DB, hackers are kept to a minimum, probably in part to the lack of a “progression” system. DB’s lack of content and dropping playerbase might be the death of it, but as of now, it’s still going strong as far as I know. You made some great mentions, all of which, are probably pushing away many old players and not keeping too many new ones.

For me, it’s the small set of maps which bores me. DB’s maps are lackluster to say the least. (In my opinion anyways). They have potential, but more invisible walls and unwanted changes have made them worse. Dome was a step in the right direction, but it hasn’t been polished. Dockyard was fantastic, but we may see a very dumbed down version upon release (just speculation here, but I’m worried that it may change for the worse).

Now, how about we get some new maps? Maps do so much for keeping a game fresh! I’d love to see community-made or community-submitted maps be introduced to the game. I feel like that would help it tremendously. Anyways, this is just my speculation and reminiscing. I just miss the feeling I had when playing some games years ago (that sadly died for various reasons- none having to do with the gameplay being bad). Dirty Bomb is a great game and delivered that feeling right back to me! Free-to-play, not pay-to-win. Full of unique, smooth gameplay. But that gameplay can only hold onto players for so long and eventually, people get bored, devs get greedy, hackers get interested, and games die… Let’s hope that doesn’t happen to DB.

So in short, maps need to change, more need to be made. + all of your points, especially with crafting. There aren’t any games like DB and there’s a very very very small selection of free-to-play FPS games on the market (ones worth event trying). Personally, I’ll be playing DB until it dies. Hope you come back eventually. And maybe when you do, there will have been some awesome changes to check out!

I’ve NEVER seen anything even remotely resembling a lie from SD. Be aware, if I did, I’d be the first one all over them as I’m sure several people will attest. These kind of accusations are one of the things that really infuriate me on these forums, that and the level of infantile garbage that some people try pass off as humour/sarcasm while just openly slagging the developers. I don’t like a lot of things going on in the game, but overall I’m still happy with what exists, I know SD are aware of my dislikes/questions because they hear same things from people I know they listen too. I certainly feel no need to come on the forums and stamp my feet, call the devs liars and theives, and of course then threaten to quit playing (a free game).
Sorry, I just find it sad

a good example, getting abuse flagged for this:

seriously, could that be more childish

(hawkeyeguy99) #20

@Nail Kinda understand your frustration. Maybe I did come across wrong. I do feel deceived by the dev videos and that’s what I was trying to communicate. No need to apologize for your opinion.
