Why does only et lag online for me??

I’m running on a cable modem and get good pings (under 50) but I keep getting random lags… I’ll run for a bit, then SLAM! I’m stuck in the open and can’t move for about 10-20 seconds. After some time, everything cleans up and off I go again…

This only seems to be happening with et, q3a was running fine. It also didn’t start up until about a month or two ago… I’ve since reformatted the system and nothing has changed.

Are there any settings I should be looking at in the config to stablize cable modems? I’m running on linux (q3a engine games crash for me in windows.)

open console and set

/cg_drawfps 1
/cg_lagometer 1

have a look for strangeness when it happens, can give some clues (maybe is your cpu being used by other program, hdd activity?). also can be worthwhile looking in console when it happens, see if there’s some PB message (e.g. sendig a pb screenshot).

do you have a sblive or sb audigy? if so update your drivers because i was having the same problem one time till i did that

First thing to do is test your Connection via some webby with a BB speed test, search google.co.uk for Broadband Speed Test or summit. Make sure its stable in general not just for a single game and check your NIC/CM settings are either at the defaults when it was running fine after instalation or at the ones you had set when it was running fine with say, Q3A. Even if you personally havnt changed anything things love to randomly do whatever it wishes…

For ET in general search the forum for Connection Config guides, eg, settings like /cl_maxpackets, /snaps, /rate… as im at work and I can only be assed with trolling this forum cant do much else for ya atm… If its any help im on 600k NTL Cable in UK and my current connection settings are at:

Timedemo FPS was about 90 iirc.
cl_maxpackets 60/80
snaps 40/60
rate 25000

Cant remember exactly cos im always having to change them due to dodgy PB/ETPro servers consistantly being setup incorrectly. :<
