Why do YOU not use a microphone in public matches?

(Naonna) #1

In many game modes, especially execution, communication can be a game changer. Knowing where enemies are, where they’re pushing, and when they’re flanking or attacking objectives can be very useful. (Spotting phantom’s location also is a good use - even if that merc is in a sorry state as it is.)

Some people opt to use the quick-chat system. While this works sometimes, it can be difficult in the middle of a firefight, if one can even push the corresponding keys fast enough without losing mobility.
(Fun fact: You can re-bind the quick-chat button while in a match by hitting escape and options: they’re different than the default main-screen settings.)

I generally avoid using my voice unless others do first - not wanting to be an outcast, as stupid as that may seem. Also, being female, I will occasionally get odd reactions on the rare chance I do speak.

The worry of some I’ve asked tends to be along the lines of ‘shut up little kid’ - which, let’s be honest, is kind of dick-ish. Hating the pitch of someone’s voice is not always an immediate reason to disregard information they may have. (Although, if you’re under 14 and playing this game, even if skilled, you may be breaking some ESRB rules.)

List your reason for not speaking up mid-match below:
If you do speak in-game, what advantages have you seen your team have over the team not using voice chat?

p.s. The ESRB line was a joke. Don’t murder me. Q~Q;
p.p.s. The comment about phantom was not.
p.p.p.s. Still, don’t murder me please.

I only use mic in Execution because Objective/Stopwatch is where most players just casually play.

(XavienX) #3

I use it when necessary since I have a mic so why not? I only get annoyed by people who talk random shit on the mic, but I don’t care about their voice pitch. If I think it’s a girl, I personally ask them if they are a girl even though it’s a bit awkward but it’s better than instantly referring them as a squeaker. Those who do and think they are annoying 12 year olds are ignorant and just plain retarded.

Because it’s public. For that matter, MM is the same. I’m confident enough in my ability to carry the entire team without the use of comms. I love chatting smack just as much as the other, but I’ll likely do that on TS with buddies. Also, whenever you do find me on a pub/mm, it’s usually because I’m trying to relax or just blow of some steam, tryharding is reserved for scrims and cups <3

Honestly though. Use it. If you want the whole experience of comms, just go for it. Some will respond, others wont. Worst case you get yourself a few 12 year olds sucking up to you, I’d imagine the majority of people are cool about it. Otherwise you can always hop onto the DBN TS, plenty of decent people on there that enjoy pubbing/MMing once in a while.

I always felt rather weird about in-game Voips in any game. It’s just not my thing, it’s a mix of adolescent teenagers, undecipherable russian accents and bad quality mics that I just can’t be bothered putting up with. Which is usually why I just instantly disable any of these features without giving it a second thought. Helps that I rarely ever play a game on my own, with at least another mate or two that are on TS with me.

I use it when it is really essential and would be a game changer in my opinion. If the team is retarded then there is no point in me being the tryhard. As for whom i would recommend to best stfu . . .
Well here are some tips to not get muted:

short, clear sentences. Noone wants to hear your life story or how often you can cry noob and faggot in 10 sec.

Use english. Eventhough i understand english, german and french i tend to ignore non english if the information can only be understoood by 2 or 3 people.

Don’t try to be a tryhard smartass. Noone likes that and even if you have good intentions, an intents match is not the best time to coach some scrubs how to play best “in your opinion”.

If you swear or harrass you are automaticly muted and reported in my case

Always be polite and respectful, we are mates for the time being but not your homies or whatever you feel the need to impress with your colorful language

Maybe it’s just me and I’m being very picky about how i enjoy voice chat. But as someone with experience in big guild meetings and conference calls over the globe I like clear and sturctured communication. Chaotic nonsense as in everyone talks bs at once is not helpful and this tends to happen often with ingame voicechat. So i tend to avoid it if possible.

I never use mics in game. I just don’t have much to say.

(Terminal_6) #7

I default to typing as fast as possible with many typos over using a mic because it encourages other people to use a mic, under which the specific reasons why I don’t use my mic fall.
Every now and then, there’s the person who uses a mic and only uses it to relay important information. They’re okay. In fact, they’re great. They’re the best mic users out there.

Then there’s everyone else.
“Medic. Medic. MEEEEEEDIIIIIC. MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-” and so on. Or the people who just reiterate the objective because somehow that will remind me to push my big red “complete objective” button. “Plant it.” “Defuse it.” “Push.” Okay, General Armchair McPatton.

Then, on a whole new level, there’s the guys who treat it like their personal VOIP server, who somehow implemented voice detection because push-to-talk is just such a hassle. (Not actually what happens, that’s just what it feels like) Every “funny” moment they have to make a remark, along with every frustrating moment and every mundane moment. All the moments. Like PewDiePie joined the game or something.

And many, many more.

If you’re asking why I don’t mute them, know that I do. I mute everyone who makes a peep, just about. And I don’t use my mic because maybe I become that annoying guy to someone else, or everyone else decides to perk up and have a conversation about the weather, and because it would be weird to have the whole team muted but still talk about stuff over mic.

Also talking with strangers is awkward. What if they hurt my feelings?

(Mura) #8

I dislike using it, since the only times I’ve heard people speak they sound prepubescent or are raging. Makes me feel like a pedophile speaking when I hear what sounds like a toddler on the other end

(gg2ez) #9

Hold on, you feel like a paedophile when you talk to younger people? That’s pretty drastic.

(Mura) #10

Well I am a bit older than some of the people who play this, kinda weird hearing 12 and 13 year olds on mic

(Mr-Penguin) #11

I don’t have a mic, nor will I ever use one.

(Ctrix) #12

You know what gets old really quickly? Getting asked if you’re a girl or underaged everytime you talk in a video game. Usually you can tell easily, and does it matter that much?

Personally, what Shananuga said. I get very quickly annoyed at people talking on voice. And I won’t use one either. I’d rather flame in chat.

(Captain_Forward) #13

My glorious voice only for my glorious friends.

(zealousHumdinger) #14

I sound like a girl and I’m shy.

(Naonna) #15

is a girl and is shy ‘-’ … your argument is invalid.

(brennanfreak) #16

Damn… People are stingy when it comes to mic use. I actually like using my mic.

(SereneFlight) #17

People rarely listen a word others say so why bother…

(Martín) #18

I just don’t speak english :s

(Aazhyd) #19

I hear people yelling in my ears GET ME UP GET ME UP!!! It distracts a lot and I hate it.

It is rare when someone actually says something useful.

(bontsa) #20

I like to spout nonsense over the mic when people get too tryhard-ish (trying =/= tryhard) in pub setting, or start flaming each other. Or when I’m tipsy. Or all the above. Usually either defuses the situation or turns the hate towards me, and common enemy is the best way of getting people off each others throats
