Why can we see enemy health?

(SinDonor) #1

I just think it’s kind of weird that everyone knows what everyone else’s health level is at.

I could understand if Medics could see what teammate’s health is at, since they’re the ones tasked with healing. But, to know that the bad guy across the level in your crosshairs has 20% health is a bit “different”.

I’m not saying it’s bad or good, I’m just wondering why SD decided to show enemy health on screen.

In other mp games you can guestimate how well you are doing against someone due to their constant base health + learning the damage your weapons do, and you can use it to decide whether to chase someone down or retreat.

In brink however you can’t really do this as player health is so variable, you have base health + any combo of the following:
1 pip from abilitiy + 1-2 pips from medic boost + 1-2 pips from command post.
And each of those pips is on a diminishing scale.

Plus players may have kevlar buff from engineer which reduces damage taken.

So directly showing the health as a bar is a solution.

If I punch you in the face and you start to bleed, I can see your health has gone down

It’s nice. BC2 does it too.

(SinDonor) #5

Right. But there won’t be a health bar floating above my head, so you won’t know HOW much it went down.

Enemy health should not be shown. Oversight or bug.

I hope.

My point is: Why do we need to know enemies’ exact health levels? This is just strange to me. It’s like we’re all outfitted with magic doctor goggles. When I see a group of guys heading my way, I’ll know which one to shoot at first because I can see he’s only got 10% health.

This works EVEN if I’ve been flashbanged. My entire screen can be white, yet the enemy icons and health are still bright orange. Kind of silly really.

I roll with a Heavy Engy Gotlung. So, in the middle of a battle, even if I’m blinded, I just randomly spray around until I see a certain enemy only has low health and focus on that guy/direction.

Intended. Appreciated by this guy.

i dont like it either, even if the year is 2030 i dont think any army would have the ability to see another armys health

(Inofor) #10

I kind of like the fact that it is shown, since there are so many different buffs.

Oh, that should really be fixed. I haven’t noticed that yet.

(needforWeed) #11

So what? It’s a game.

(SinDonor) #12

It’s a strange mechanic in a game. It’s not very common in shooter games. I was wondering why SD even put it in there. Why did they feel it would add to the game?

I don’t really mind it, but it kind of takes away from a bit of the shooting realism since I KNOW that certain enemies will die soon. In other FPS games, during crazy shootouts, if I don’t know how much health my enemy has left, do I risk running out of bullets before I can kill him, or do I take cover and reload?

It’s not bad or good, it’s just different. I think some people would change up their strategies quite a bit if we didn’t know our enemies’ exact health level.

(Hyrage) #13

For casual players… what else?

(The_Happy_Friar) #14

I like it. It reminds me of when I was playing Carmageddon DM years ago. Me & someone else rammed eachother, both survived & we ran away. We had no clue why the other person survived (we didn’t think the other person would). A health bar then would of made me be hunted down vs not.

(SinDonor) #15

Yeah, possibly, SD put it in there so people would either KNOW when to be aggressive and when to run away.

(Shotgun Surgeon) #16

Not at all. I don’t even think casual players like the health bar over the head. It takes away from the immersion, in my opinion.

With the numbers and health and everything, the game reminds me of Borderlands. Actually, when I saw the previews for this game the first thing that came to mind was “Borderlands Multiplayer.”

But I think they did it from a strategic viewpoint. You know which enemy has the lowest health so you can prioritize which ones to bring down first to bring the enemy numbers down. But other than that, I don’t exactly like it either…

(Ashog) #17

I’d rather: “Why can’t I see names of incapacitated enemies?”

As now, I can neither see whom I am teabagging, nor can I detect who is the owner of that nice outfit that is lying in front of me incapacitated.

Sad indeed.

(Hyrage) #18

Well, that’s casual… since you don’t have to communicate with teammates and use brain

(FireWorks) #19

I like it very much.

Yeah, reminds me of the old saying:

“Tracers work both ways.”
