Who made which map in ETQW

(Rex) #1

I thought it would be interesting to share who made which map in ETQW:
There was a fair bit of map sharing going on, but from memory:

Canyon - Pretty much everyone as it was our first map and changed a lot over development.

Valley - 2nd map, a lot of people worked on this but I think Davros worked on it the most towards the end

Sewer - Wils

Area22 - NakedApe and LloydM

Outskirts - Draska

Refinery
- NakedApe and Davros

Island - Wils, Nerve Software and possibly LloydM

Ark - Wils & Davros

Slipgate - Naked Ape & LloydM

Volcano - Draska

Salvage - Davros

Quarry - Wils & Nerve Software
For those who don’t know Nerve Software, they worked and assisted in many id titles such as the RTCW multiplayer, … inculding the ETQW port for Xbox 360 and helped on Quarry and Island.

Thanks for interesting post. All maps are epic made from any point of view. Build in story of kinda alien/human struggle really works plus some marketing trick with continents where game should be distributed. Those maps are really organic and game is really well-made product ever seen. I like that every map is kinda not the same like you have to capture flag bla bla bla. Its more interesting to construct EMP-destructor, blow grates and hack sewer flood gate etc , those little details make game product epic.

Modern games loosing this ‘core’ existed in ETQW and become self-enjoyment personal tities for gamers with customizing pants and other teen-psychology ‘compensating features’ like female models with big swords.

You’ve listed volcano twice.

It was quite an achievement to make 12 distinctive maps that all looked different from each other, it’s a shame the universe couldn’t have been explored more in an expansion pack or follow up, would have been great to see more maps set in other areas on Earth, Central and South America along with the far east would have been delightful to see. Additionally I would have been interested to see what they could have done with a game set on Stroggos, they could have opened up loads of possibilities, whilst not my favourite maps gameplay wise those that did feature an abundance of Strogg related stuff were my favourite visually, for example the last stage of Slipgate is pretty awesome, assuming you can get passed the MCP stage…

Sorry if I divert too much, but Slipgate had a clever design with that portal and the desert/snowy landscapes, I must say. Loved it. I also firmly believe that there should have been a Mothership map, and there were probably plans for it too. These hackers at SD Towers are a creative bunch.

If anyone is interested there are few custom mapmakers on this video

check salvage map. i believe the salvage itself is a mothership for microscopic alien rhinos.

I’m forever in debt to Davros.

What an amazing map Salvage was.

And still is! Probably one of my favourites along with Volcano and Area22.

I think Salvage was good but flawed, it required a community modification to be playable in competition.

The first stage was nice with some good choke points around the objective and plenty of flanking options for attack, the second stage was rather dull at the mining laser, if you timed the first objective well you could get it over with quickly luckily. The last stage had a really nice layout indoors but was too long when you take into account you first need to get passed the outer walls so it required an additional forward spawn inside after you already captured another spawn just previously to get inside the complex walls, I would have personally done away with that outdoors phase of the last stage and brought the whole area closer to the mining laser stage. Still a nice map though.

Volcano, the map that needed a whole stage cutting out to be ‘playable’? I never liked how restrictive the entrance is to the second objective, also if you get a bad spawn on defence from the first objective it’s pretty much game over, rather easy for attack to send guy to plant obj and then rest to camp spawn which only has in effect 1 exit, both exits are on top of each other (door and window)…

Sewer is my favourite map, it really flows well in my opinion and has the right mix of vehicle and infantry gameplay with loads of opportunities to push back an attack and take risks on both sides. I love the first stage for it’s battle between the various classes and vehicles which you don’t seem to get on other maps as much (talking 6v6 here). You have titans and cyclops locked in battle trying to evade not only each other but attempts from infantry to disable and damage them. You have a hog running riot trying to take out everything in sight trying to dodge rocket fire and titan shots. You get snipers annoying the **** out of the other side requiring an equal to balance him out. You have soldiers and covops trying to disable AITs so the field ops can use their fire support to clear vehicles and infantry for the objective. Somehow in all of that you still get infantry in the compound locked in fierce shootouts at the garage and building. With two decent teams playing it’s quite a spectacle with a wealth of tactics coming into play. Also as a rocket whore it’s the perfect stage when you’re on defence

Also you forgot another map, begins with W.

Only Wils, NakedApe and LloydM were around for ET.
