What is the second best ET-datacenter since Wolfmap closed down?
Who inherited Wolfmap?
There are several alternative services, such as:
Wolffiles
TrackBase
RTCW4EVER
Wolfenstein FileFront
and much MUCH more

Just!ce, just a little question beside:
Im trying to drive wolffiles.de forward, and so Im searching for improvements all the time.
What could make wolffiles.de better? If youve any inspiration please let me know about. A few things, just like the testservers, the geometrical mapsize aso. we have allready implemented. But were happy when we get feedback from (potential) user.
Thanks and Regards

Wow! Didn’t even see that. That’s awesome.
You should promote your website on xfire, get people to spread the word in their clans and maybe think about advertising it. I believe Google has a function where you can buy your way up on the search list, but I barely have experience with websites whatsoever.
If you are going to advertise, you might enable a donation function on your site. I see (and respect) you linked donors to Unicef. But face it. Most gamers who donate are still teenagers, around the 18 years old. It is pretty harsh, but I don’t think that group of people will actually choose to donate their money to Unicef in reference of your website.
I really respect what you’re doing.
A few details:
- The mail I received for registering, didn’t say anything about wolffiles.de. Only that I had registered on some website, but not which one.
- Try to keep people speaking english on the forum. When I first got to wolfmap.de I though the website was for germans only, so I preferred FileFront at that time.
- Seen the features on your site you have an advantage on the other websites, you should make an information page about your site and it’s features and maybe put it on front of your website. I just looked at the main page for the one which was most impressive to me and chose that one. Though you should also keep the news on the index page.
- Try to keep it updated as fast as possible. Do you use bots to do that? Then it ought be no problem.
- I see you get the information from splatterladder, but when people will choose your website above any other, you could contact SL and prove that your website is better then RTCW4ever (which they currently use to gather their information).
This is the way I see it. I can’t be held responsible if I’m wrong.
You have convinced me
I will use and promote this website for you.
Thank you for asking my opinion, makes me feel I’m a use to something
Add me on xfire: antonh1. I’ll keep you updated on any other ideas that hit my mind.
Edit: If possible, the downloads could have a little more information. Amount of downloads, author, homepage, a rating and maybe how much it’s used:
http://et.splatterladder.com/?mod=maplist
http://et.splatterladder.com/?mod=serverlist (mods)
The downloads also could be a bit more arranged to make it look professional.
I have no idea of the difficulty of those suggestions.
Just!ce, thank you very much for your feedback.
I`ll do my best to fit the wishes of the users, as far I know them, oc.
To take your points:
-The register-mail body is changed now (thanks for the information about it)
-Im planning to split the forum into english and german part, but I completly comply with your opinion, english should be the first choice -Im not a good avdertiser, like youve seen. But a bullet list with our main features is a very good idea (which Ill follow)
-Our news are all handmade, since Im not a friend of news collection bots. ATM my team and me are searching activ for new files and not at least some supporters (SL Rippchen, Berzerkr) inform us about new maps in the wild. Im still developing an API to the filebase, so even external people can benefit from it. Also Im allowed (thx to rippchen for the approve) to grep out the map-usage from Splatterladder, to let people sort after it, and get a rating of it. But this is, like wrote, in developement and no rollout date is fixed (or assumed) yet. Im still looking for reinforcement for the news section. My time is very limited, so Im glad StoerFaktoR is commited and Ive more time for the development.
-Calibra8v currently began to collect screenshots and review the maps. Those data will be displayed in the future. At this point: Cali, thank you very much!
Only one point of your suggestions is a mental no-go for me
If I display the download-counts of the files, it would end up in a blurred data clutter, because the biggest part of files were downloaded at wolfmap.de over years. To display an own count would be confuse cause very popular maps like supply would shown counts like 2 (cause everybody downloaded it years ago
)
To bring the post to an end:
Thanks again! I`m really glad to get feedback.
Regards
Schnoog
I have a few questions about the File-Testing feature.
When your site gets popular, how are you going to cope all the testing done? There are 7 servers, but what if they’re already used?
How long are those servers up when one uses it? Until he leaves?
One can start all server and leave them open, you should try to prevent that be comparing IP’s.
Also, the download speed of those servers is pretty slow. Maybe it’s my connection…
Ideas:
- Whenever you request a download link, it is displayed in a new page. It might be an idea to use messageboxes instead, it’s a little more neat.
- Add an option to connect with xfire whenever you start a testserver, example:
xfire:join?game=wet&server=88.198.32.79:28000
Each testserver stop 30 min after map-start.
So, hopefully, no waiting time is needed for the user.
The idea to capture the ip and place an event for double-starts is quite good
The download-rate shouldn`t be limited in any way. I allway got full DSL3000 speed. But will figure it out @ work [ 100MB Downstream
]
The other 2 points (xfire-link and msg-box) are on my todo-list now
Sad to hear that.
If you’re using a download-manager, go to this site and download the files from there.
It’s an open directory, should work fine.

Few suggestions.
-
While registering rules are in non English language and other things are in English language. Possible to add English EULA?
-
Might want to add support for twitter/facebook/openID login. Now a days on every popular website/forums has those login features if needed. Makes making account on forums much easier.
-
Possible to add more shorting feature by Total Downloads, Map release date, etc.
-
Around 60-80% time server admins are going to download the map. If possible I would like to see ‘comments’ for map where user can share there opinion if possible. It makes much easier for admins to select the maps for there server, based on comments of user for that map.
-
I noticed many of the map images give 403 error. Example:
http://www.wolffiles.de/filepics/3419.jpg
http://www.wolffiles.de/filepics/3518.jpg -
When I hit download it didn’t do anything for approximate 30 seconds… Might want to add download counter so user knows, ok I need to wait till download is ready… or user might think, download is not working and would leave the website.

Search for download in this link doesn’t work at all.

HI Hellreturn, thanks for your feedback.
Just edited the EULA, thanks for this hint.
To catch your points:
Ill look if its possible to add support for OpenID. Because theres no module for the CMS yet, I`ll have to write an own. But this could use some weeks.
To add more data to the files is planned and just in development (screenshots, reviews, comments)
Shame on me, Ive done a mistake with some pictures, forgotten to set the right permissions. Now fixed and new triggered. Thanks. (by myself, I wouldnt find such errors within >2000 maps)
Ive tested the downloading on some machines, but I havent noticed a waiting time yet (starting imm. after the click). Can you let me know, which browser youre using so Im maybe able to reconstruct those behavior.
And to the last point: Your 100% right, so search in the filebase I places a seperate link in the menu. Ill add a link also in the search box, so its more apparent. (Edit: Fixed, now another field for filesearch is in the search box)
Thanks for all your feedback. Each point counts for me.
Regards
Schnoog
Thanks for +ve response on feedback.
@Download issue: I am using Chrome 10.x version and location = US.
Thanks hellreturn. On monday I ll have a step visit to East Hannover (NY), so I could test it by myself. Here from within germany Im not able to reconstruct such issues.
I`m still on it

Now that’s what I call customer service
Ive tested it @ JFK (buisiness lounge) and also in East Hannover . I wasnt able to reconstruct this issue.
Currently a friend of mine is traveling to WestCoast and will test it there.
After maximal 10 seconds the downloads started in my tests.
Will post more, after the guy have reported me his experience.
Regards
Schnoog
Just talked to the guy who tested it from San Jose @ east coast.
He also had no trouble with the downloads. (but he tested it on a mac with safari yet, another try with Windows and some browser (IE, FF , GC) will be performed within the next few days).
Could you try an tracert on wolffiles, and mail me the response ( schnoog -at - wolffiles.de ). Maybe I`m able to detect a bottleneck or something like that (routing …)
More info will follow when available.

Schnoog
