Who can stop the rain?

(tjw) #1

My framerate completly falls apart when I go outside in the map where it’s
raining.

Anyone have a suggestion for turning off rain or making it render faster?

(Ifurita) #2

bind x “toggle cg_atmosphericeffects”

toggles rain/snow on and off

(ND80) #3

True, you can turn em off. However, some server admins, including myself have set pb to check for that cvar. I think turning off atmospheric effects gives that player an unfair advantage similar to turning off fog in RTCW maps.

(Vengeance) #4

Whenever i disable atmospheric effects it gives me a maximum increase of 1fps. So its hardly worth doing.

(tjw) #5

I havent’ tried yet, but from what you’re saying, it’s probably not the rain at all
that’s bringing me into choppy-land. It’s probably all that swaying vegitation.

Maybe that also falls under atmospheric effect. We’ll see.

(McAfee) #6

it’s not the rain, it’s the foliage.

(Vengeance) #7

Yeah i know and im glad to foliage cvar is cheat protected as well.

(ExPLiCiT) #8

Its prolly cause you have a fast system, before I disabled it I had around 4 FPS and with it disabled I get around 12-15 FPS.

(fat boost) #9

Turning off the rain helped a whole lot on my system. I’d also like to thank ND80 for making it illegal, as his server is the only one I can play on since it doesn’t change maps. This is like being kicked for turning down my resolution or using low quality sound.

(Dawg) #10

Amusingly, I was on one of the ND80 servers today when someone was trying to set the cg_atmosphericeffects to zero. First they were screwing up the syntax but they eventually got it right. For some reason, I got kicked for cvar cg_atmosphericeffects = 0 !!! So I jump on another ND80 server and the exact same thing happened in about a minute! I am assuming it was the same joker (didn’t catch the name either time) and he had been kicked from the first server and jumped on the other just like me!

<sigh> But it is kinda funny!

I guess I should mention this as a bug actually. I should not be getting kicked for someone else’s error.

Thats the thing V man runs ET on a laptop with a duff vid card and still manages to hit the high notes and I agree the atmospheric effects are an integral part of whatever map and being able to tinker with them is basically cheating.

I also believe though that any visible graphical change to the game (apart from I think it’s something like hunkmegs whereby you set more memory aside for action (I think)) that isn’t available via in game menus is cheating too. Play the goddamn game as it was meant to be played in all it’s graphical beauty or not at all. I also know for a fact that there are people out there with 3Ghz CPUS and DX9 monster vid cards that are sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo highly tweaked (and still within most servers limits (sorry I’m referring to regular wolfy here but I’m sure the same will happen for ET)) that the game would be passable as something from the Atari VCS.

In short play it out of the box or not at all, those faces weren’t worked on only to end up looking like pac man.

As a matter of fact how do the SD people feel about all their effort in graphical detail being tweaked to death ?

(ND80) #12

Because of several problems with this setting, I have decided to delete the cvar for atmospheric effects. Apparently players were getting kicked even when they had not changed a thing. The last thing I want to do is to prevent players from being able to play on my servers. I do however try to make it a fair environment for everyone. For now, there will be no atmospheric cvar.

(Vengeance) #13

I have to agree with Smyler because the why ET looks is very impressive. When ppl find a way to tweak it to crap it no longer becomes ET on there screen.

I have never tweaked RTCW since the day of its release because i couldnt play it with all the tweaks since i think this is an unfair advantage.

I am a default cfg and like Smyler put I play it out of the box.

So since I get really bad fps on ET im just gonna wait (which believe me is gonna be a long time) until i can get a better machine. I will still occasinaly play goldrush and Fueldump because i can cope with the fps i get from these.

(BlackDeath) #14

Smyler hit it right on the money with this sentence. First of all, i couldn’t stand playing a game that looked like something from the Doom era. It just looks like crap. I not only buy fps games because of their action and , but also because of their visual appeal.

Second, foliage and other obscuring objects were made and put into place because of their OBSCURING effect. If someone can separate those effects, that is cheating. That person has just taken some of that effect out, showing the positions of players who would normally be invisible.

Thirdly, people who turn up their brightness to incredibly rediculous levels should also be shot  If its night outside, let it be night. Not only does it look incredibly cool, but the darkness of night also obscures things that would be visible during the day.

I know the tweaking wars will go on forever, or as long as they are allowed, but i just thought i would share my $0.02

B_D

P.S. Yeah, my computer chokes down to 8 fps on the radar level, but i live through it. Untill there is someway to solve this problem without giving myself an unfair advantage, im not gonna change anything

P.P.S. I can beat tweakers because of my SKILL, not because i can change my settings so i can see better. If you cant see the game well enough, your either too old to play, or need a new set of glasses :bash:

(fat boost) #15

I get disconnected after every single map change and no one knows why, I’m gonna tweak every damn thing tweakable untill I can play for more than one round at a time.

(McAfee) #16

Ovarall, i think the radar map needs to be readjusted, it consumes a lot more power than the other maps and the specs specified in the minimum system requirements.

They should provide us with an alternate draw method for foliage, like multiple layers of flat textures that always face the camara (similar to how smoke works, and old 3d games). Something that will keep the gameplay fair, and not consume as much processing (even if it doesn’t look as nice).

(TysonChicken) #17

So long as players with 3ghz cpus and 1ghz cpus can play against each other some graphic tweaking should be allowed. Turning things off like shadows under the players don’t exactly give a fighting advantage but help a 1ghz player play on the same level as a 3ghz player. Er well not really but if you combine it with some other tweaks. Playing a quake based game out of the box as it is wastes so much nifty tweaking potential.

As for 3ghz players tweaking the hell out of their cfgs well… Some things like disabling tree limbs and cranking up the gamma so you can see in dark areas perfectly is bs and shouldn’t be allowed. Lowering the texture quality so much that players stand out like a sore thumb isn’t fair either. I don’t care how fast or slow a computer is some junk isn’t acceptable. However, sometweaks don’t give any advantage other then for gaining some fps and that isn’t a crime so long as people can play with different system specs.

Just because a tweak didn’t get put into the menu doesn’t make it bad. Thing’s like disabling gibbed body parts on the ground dont affect the battle experience of the game enough to be considered cheating. Some eye candy is pointless and with slower systems isn’t worth the fps loss in huge battles.

Changing things can help boost system performance for some guys. Thankfully punkbuster helps keep jerks from abusing some settings.

I must disagree. In theory it’s a good idea to cap gamma, in practice it sucks donkey butt. I have a dark graphics card/driver/monitor. Up until today when I was forced to update my drivers the radar and goldrush maps were unplayable, we’re talking pitch black with some movement flickering by now and then. at least after changing drivers I can see how the maps are actually laid out. By default those with a brighter screen/card/driver will then have a huge advantage.

Anyway, most drivers have the capability to crank up thee gamma in windows, so capping it ingame or through PB is pointless. Leave r_gamma free to change (within reason) because there are other ways to get nightvision anyway.

(TysonChicken) #19

Probably shouldn’t have said gamma.Ya your right it’s hard to control it when monitors and video cards are so different. It’s just on a lot of tweaked configs people go overboard. PB is seems good at stoping other junk though.

(Kekojones) #20

this is funny . I also think no almost no tweaking should be allowed.

This is like Formula 1. People always attacks Ferrary cause the have the best cars. Its the same for computers…its sad cause some people can’t affort the latest machine.

Then again with hardware prices as low as they are today a small sacrifice does pays you well when you do a computyer upgrade.

5 months ago I had a shitty computer (700mhz celeron 64 ram tnt2) so I just focus on playign teh game I could run well…Day of defeat, Counterstrike, etc.

Now I have a decent machine and can play better games grafically.I guess some of teh guys should do the same.
