Which engine DB should have been built on?

(TheStrangerous) #1

I know exporting DB to another engine is impossible.
But just for the sake of “what if” theory, I like to think of the scenario where the butterfly effect took place, during SD game engine decision.

Which engines would have benefited and which not? Of course we all know how it goes with UE3, so let’s leave this one alone.

SD had been working on games with idTech3 and idTech4 engine (Quake Wars and ET:Wolfenstein), I could see them handle these engines with no problem. Many fan mods spawned from them.

The Minecraft engine. It even has Proxeepers in it

(Chilled Sanity) #3

Calling proxy that. Wow mate that’s an insult.

To Minecraft. #RemoveProxy

Probably UE4, but to be honest, I don’t think there’s an engine out there that can do DB justice. DB is in such aesthetic, being half cartoon and half realist, so basically half TF2/Overwatch and half Call of Duty/Battlefield. But then it has CS:GO/battlefield gun mechanics.

Unreal 4

Honestly game engines come down to a few things, ease of use, options and potential for the game, and optimization. Currently I feel like Source and Unreal are all that are worth it for shooters. The rest idk

Frostbite Engine

Imagine being able to take down whole buildings in Dirty Bomb. Call in an airstrike and annihilate a bridge…

That’d be dumb and easily abused

Keep that shit in Battlefield

Maybe so. Would still be awesome to see. But I wouldn’t want those “realistic” looking graphics. I love Dirty Bomb’s art style and its cartoonish aspect.

UE3 is fine if devs know what they’re doing. UE4 is a crapshoot from what I’ve played. I’d like them to have used an idTech engine for sure, because the OpenGL support is cool.

(HammerOfDawn21) #10

Cryengine, It scales well on low end PCs, though I’m not sure how painful it would be for the developers to use Cryengine.

(kopyright) #11

People usually go overboard with the shiny/wetness look in UnrealEngine 4. Which, on the other hand, would fit the London theme of course.

(BlackboltLW) #12

I honestly keep thinking about CryEngine

(nokiII) #13

idtech3, accept no substitute.

#14

No other engine ever came close.

(Nail) #15

idTech 3 lol

would look like poo

It’s better to have tons of bugs and “good” graphics for sure… that’s why best movies are from 2017… I can’t even remember good movie before this year. Nice one

WTF are you babbling about movies in 2017, there’s nothing in UE3 from this decade, it’s from 2004

As much as I disagree with adding destruction to DB, frostbite is actually a really good engine. Runs really well, has pretty good input latency, and @watsyurdeal you don’t have to use the destruction features if it doesn’t make sense (not like FIFA has destructible goals).

I’d still say going with ue4 would be best since the dev team is small and ue4 is really easy to learn and iterate with. The only problem are the default netcode settings are dogshit from what I’ve heard and the default mouse input is pretty bad too but both of those problems can be fixed.

Better API’s from manufacturers and Windows… I could imagine if Source Engine would partner up with manufacturers of pointing devices.
