Which body type is your favourite? (part 1)

(tokamak) #1

Just some curiosity derived out of other threads. We still don’t know everything about the body types but just from the general idea that small means light, fragile, fast, and excellent in SMART movement, and heavy means, slow, tough, and broad selections of weapons; which body type is your favourite right now?

We might have to make a new poll the moment more info is released.

(darthmob) #2

I prefer the small and fast type. I like fast movement and it will be interesting to see how agilitiy will compensate for the other shortcomings.

(tokamak) #3

Ah throwing the gauntlet in right from the start are we? Movement as well as weapon usage require skill, especially the slow types will rely on anticipation instead of twitch reflexes.

(Senyin) #4

The light bodytype.
It’s not a tough choice because I very much prefer speed and flexibility.

Slow movement simply annoys me, I have no interest at all in the Bubba’s atm,
but ofcourse that could change with time and info.

What about you tokamak? Whats your reasoning for choosing Heavy?

(dohfOs) #5

light, i’m the guy who run around basically all the time, expect me to be the first guy u face when playing me :stuck_out_tongue:
Ah throwing the gauntlet in right from the start are we? I may have used a misleading choice of words and edited my post.

I always enjoyed going against fast spies and scouts in TF2 with the rocket launcher. The combination of slow movement and rocket speed makes it an interesting challenge where you need some twitch skills and prediction. It’s really satisfying to blow that fast bugger to bloody pieces before he can stab you in the back. Interestingly enough I didn’t really like the fast classes in the game as they didn’t have enough firepower for my taste.
light, i’m the guy who run around basically all the time, expect me to be the first guy u face when playing me :p
Yeah it’s a lot of fun finding the fastest and most effective ways to reach your targets. I just hope the light class will be good at going past blocking teammates.

What I think makes ET so great is that you’re able to outwit players who might posses over better button coordination than you.

In TF2 I’m also always playing the heavy as well. Being slow yet powerful means you can literary throw your weight around if you’ve correctly anticipated the other players and assessed the situation correctly.

Being slow and heavy means that there’s little room for mistakes but when done right it can lead to turning an entire match on it’s head. That’s what appeals to me. In a similar way a totally improvised acrobatic move by a fast player could wipe out half a team or secure an objective.

I think the preferences come down to the time perspectives people have. It’s planning vs improvisation, both are equally valuable and letting them clash against each other in one game is extremely interesting.

I’ve always been a movement whore, so predictably i’ve went with the light option

(Bezzy) #9

Just out of interest, what sorts of benefits to other body types would sway your choice? Or would you simply not be swayed?

(Exedore) #10

I see no option on the poll for Charlize Theron.

(tokamak) #11

Well the medium sizes seem a bit… mediocre. I know they’re supposed to be mediocre and that generalism is a skill on it’s own. But do these guys get anything special that makes them a distinct asset to the team? Can they perhaps specialise in movement or better proefficiency?

So far I’m really happy with the poll results, that’s allot of babies to get in ma belly.

(shibbyuk) #12

Judging by the results so far (while only a small, biassed sample and far from scientific), it seems there needs to be something especially attractive about the heavier body types. Of course, until we see what guns become available and just how tough the larger bodies are we can’t really be sure how much we will want to play using them.

*Got distracted while writing this - in the meantime Bezzy has asked what would sway the choice…

I like what I heard about all their abilities being a bit more powerful, e.g. healing ability and so on. BUT there’s a question over XP - should they get more for using those abilities? It would allow some players to XP whore, and that isn’t a great reason to choose between body types.

Maybe some cool melee attacks? And/or the ability to break free / fend off melee attacks from smaller players.

(Loffy) #13

I voted “light” because I think speed will be more fun than power. Looking forward to the game, to see what type will de facto be most fun.
:stroggbanana:

Note that an initial imbalance doesn’t have to be bad at all. This is just square one of the meta-game.

I think the lack of power (and therefore xp generation) is compromised by having it easier to be in the right place at the right time.

Ideally xp is coming from the contribution you are to the team so both types will eventually have the same xp/min if played by equally skilled players.

(DarkangelUK) #15

I don’t think my choice could swayed as i’ve always been a movement based player, but really at this point it’s too early to say as all i’m looking at is movement, and have never really been interested in big flashy guns… I like it kept fast.

(stealth6) #16

I’d go for medium, because small are usually light weapons and weak, but fast. While heavy are big targets slow and big guns. While medium genrally combine average weapons with a normal hit rate etc…

Preferably I love the rambo concept, being able to run into 3 guys and manage to take them down, gives a great feeling.

(I base my opinion on team fortress 2 where you have a heavy, scout and medium classes)

What does sway my opinion is if you get a compensation, like soldiers are slow, but can use rocketjumping to speed up, but do loose health if doing so, and it’s not the easiest thing to do.

tokamak, not sure what you mean with heavy classes not being abele to rely on twitch movements, i actually find that twitch movements can make the class even more deadly.
Like in ET jumping from a corner charging and then at the last minute checking where your target is redirecting you aim before the bullet flies.
Or with the heavy weapons guy in TF2 jumping around a corner and getting your mouse on your enemy asap, or killing an enemy and then doing a 180 and killing the guy behind you.

What I absolutely hate is when games mess with your mouse. (Bioshock) in bioshock when you come into a new level your mouse is sluggish and takes a few seconds to flow again, also in general gameplay I find it sluggish.
This compared to ET where the bullets fly where you point (little spread) so the first to aim is the first to win.

Naturally it takes more aim and reflex skills to fire from a fast moving position than a slow moving one.

The heavy guy in TF2 is a great example of a planner and not an improviser. You’re slow and you need to spin up your barrel (which makes you even slower) to get your massive damage output to effect.

Personally I think mr Heavy in TF2 is just pure brilliance. Everything about the class is just right. The gun works perfectly and can be a true handicap in the wrong hands and a massive killing machine in the right hands. Even the sandvich is done well, being able to heal yourself while being a sitting duck just adds more to the planning factor.

(engiebenjy) #18

I have never liked being the heavy or scout in tf2 so i went for medium :open_mouth:

(DarkangelUK) #19

Tbh it’s not generally the temptation of the other classes that makes me switch, it’s more the limitations of my preferred class… usually they’re lumped with a useless pea shooter or a silly low amount of ammo and health. It’s a weigh up of the pros and cons, and i don’t think there’s really enough info to give the best decision at this point.

(tokamak) #20

Well you can´t say that about TF2, the scout is very scary in certain situation.

I think heavy weapons in this case should excel in being able to kill multiple targets in a short period, this doesnt have to mean that a light guy has to take ages to to kill another player.

And incentives to have both body types around are always great. If a heavy guy is able to complete objectives faster (just an idea) than it makes sense to have a light guy carry a data disc and hand it over to the heavy to let him do the transmitting.

Just an idea of how both types can be employed with synergy.
