there is a difference b/t crapping all over console gamers, and refusing to make concessions in game quality to cater to the console. many pc gamers don’t know the difference, and many console gamers don’t either.
at any rate the reasoning behind such actions are merely to attempt to ensure minimal back-slide in regards to features that were and still should be standard in any pc game. it generally goes too far in to the insulting console players because frequently they go in and ask why these things are being done, and don’t care about these features and merely want the game sooner. in general it seems to be console prefers quantity over quality and pc prefers quality over quantity, and since these two ideals are diametrically opposed to one another friction inevitably happens.
now these views are merely my perception of the general view of those pc gamers who occasionally go a little too far in regards to this matter.
my personal view is that most if not all pc games should have mod-tools, or at the very least (assuming it is an fps) a map-making tool. personally i have bought and played only ONE multiplayer fps that didn’t have a map-making tool. i got bored/tired of it very quickly. whereas with tf2 which has both mod tools and map-making tools even now i can go in and play tf2 for a few hours and have fun doing so. which is more fun than i had in the one w/o mod tools or map-making tools.
currently most console games cannot and do not benefit from the capabilities to use any of these due to the lack of precise control necessary to optimally use any of these tools. thus there is frequently a braying of console players to NOT include it because they take up dev-time and thus means that, oh noes, they have to wait to play their game, thus they can’t have their game NOW. because it is viewed as the larger audience the devs end up catering to this console group and the mod tools and map making tools get sacrificed in order to placate the console crowd while at the same time annoying the pc crowd.
thus in today’s market there exists amongst pc gamers far more fierce consumer loyalty than has EVER been found on consoles, devs such as valve who have kept the mod tools and map making tools irregardless of the additional time it may have taken, and as such have far more loyal customers than many other pc devs.
i don’t really blame console gamers for this trend i blame basic economics, and devs not realizing the massive value of consumer loyalty… anyways i’m starting to ramble so i’ll end the wall of text here…
