When will there be a "real" PC preview?

(H8tz) #1

Hi everyone,

I have been following this forum sporadicly, but now I am getting suspicious with SD information policy. Brink will be released next month and yet I haven’t heard of someone who was able to properly play it with mouse and keyboard. WHY? I mean I unserstand that SD wants to show how well Brink plays with controller, but it feels a bit like ignoring the pc gamers. So, what is the reason for it and when will that undefensible situation change? Anyone knows?

PS: anyone knows if there will be the good old “/kill” command?

(tokamak) #2

Why would you want to /kill?

(Bullveyr) #3

For the same reason as in W:ET, atacking in waves and to switch classes faster (respawn can still be faster in Brink than walking to the next command post).

H8tz : I think the problem comes mostly from the game journalists nowadays (and game magazine/websites) : almost all that is aimed toward consoles, people doing reviews comes from consoles and dont want to play with a controller that has a bazilion keys. Plus, it’s a bit more difficult to explain controls on a keyboard than on a controller, and seems to be more confortable to talk while playing too.

It’s just my understanding of the reason, I’d like a good pc review too… but I’ve got a lot of faith in SD on that.

There’s also the fact that SD has already proven their skill with PC games in the past. Seems like proving that they have pulled off the consoles as well is the more important issue.

I’m definitely with the OP as far as PC gaming is concerned. As I stated in another thread, it seems as though much of the PC information falls in the “to be revealed later” tag. Server setup, modding, etc.

I get that it’s all about making as much money as possible, and consoles are where you will make that money, but holding out on information doesn’t create more anticipation and excitement in my eyes - it raises concerns.

PC gamers have been here before, we’re not stupid. We realise the business side of things, but can also recognise when we’re being kept in the dark. Anyone remember Modern Warfare 2’s P2P server debacle? This smells suspiciously similar.

Come on SD, time to fess up.

Just don’t buy the game untill you are certain that the features we want are in. Better that then waste our money.

How often do you have devs answering directly to players ? It’s not because there’s a dozen people complaining about the lack of info that they have to give you all you want, have a little faith, be patient, there’s still more than one month till the release, the game haven’t gone gold yet !

(Shinjorai) #9

The main thing ive ever seen /kill used for honestly wasnt for any strategic value, it was people /killing themselves to keep an enemy from killing them and bein ghey with it. I agree its a good strategic option but if they dont include it, it wouldnt hurt my feelings any.

(Hansi) #10

well this is mainly true for public play. In Stopwatch clanwars 6vs6 the /kill command was quite usefull

(H8tz) #11

You don’t get my point. The question was why SD isn’t giving out information besides the standard “team-based-with-different-classes-singleplayer-multiplayer-crossborder-FPS” stuff. SD has a huge PC-gamer fanbase. I understand why you mainly give out the standard infos: to attract new people to the game. But since there is only (I woldn’t say “still”) one month till the release, I would have expected to see someone have already testplayed Brink like approx. 1/3 of the potential players want to play it. And I ask myself: why?
Serious question. Anyone have an idea?

(DarkangelUK) #12

What info exactly are you wanting? SD are using the (yes I know it’s modified) same engine as their last game… the last game had what PC gamers required in a game, so it seems you want confirmation that they haven’t gimped the PC version and purposely removed PC specific features that are inherently present in the engine?

(Humate) #13

I would like to know whether they have added the option/script of selecting nades but with having it released on mouse1. Also I would like to know specifics about what can be configured in Stopwatch/Freeplay Mode.

Thats pretty much it for pc stuff.

(H8tz) #14

Darkangel, you got a good point there

Probably because PC copies will make up closer to 10% of total sales/players than 33%. If it can even get that high. Yes, the PC community has a larger percentage of hardcore gamers within it’s total population, but the total PC gaming population really is that small compared to console.

(_Megabyte) #16

SD should release leaked version of Brink, 4 educational purposes.

(Diablo85) #17

There are never any accurate PC sale figures cause they never count digital sales which nowadays make up for the biggest ammount of PC sales. So I would like to know your source on this information?

It obviously has a smaller share than the consoles, but no way its 10% or less. Crysis 2 for example had 14% of its total sales on the PC and that is without digital sales. Think the same applies for every big title that isn’t totally crap. A 20 - 25% share for PC sales seems much more likely.

(DouglasDanger) #18

There have been a few articles published on pc parts of gaming web sites.

Why is it that the “hardcore” PC gamer crowd seem more entitled than the console gamers? “You need to give me this” “You need to give me this” “I demand mod tools” “Why aren’t you doing this?”
I want I want I want I want I want

(Herandar) #19

I thought I had more detailed information, but I can’t find a platform breakdown that includes PC sales… Also, I wouldn’t be so sure that digital sales aren’t tracked. If anything, they are much simpler to process.

Here’s the top selling titles on Steam for 2010:

1.Call of Duty: Black Ops (Activision) - $98.2 Million USD
2.Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Activision) - $39.4 Million USD
3.Left 4 Dead 2 (Valve) - $36.0 Million USD
4.Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (Electronic Arts) - $25.4 Million USD
5.Sid Meier’s Civilization V (2K Games) - $21.9 Million USD
6.Portal (Valve) - $20.0 Million USD
7.Fallout: New Vegas (Bethesda Softworks) - $17.0 Million USD
8.Metro 2033 (THQ) - $13.4 Million USD
9.Mafia II (2K Games) - $11.9 Million USD
10.Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II: Chaos Rising (THQ) - $10.8 Million USD

By comparison, Black Ops on all platforms reached $1 Billion in sales (possibly including digital downloads) by December 21, 2010.

14% is a lot closer to 10% than 33%.

You do get arsey PC gamers yes, but the ‘I wants’ usually derive from being used to having mod tools etc as standard, which is used to extend the life of a game. Seems companies these days want to treat PC players like console players and have them buy a new version of the game every year, or buy DLC, rather than enjoying the game for several years through user created content.
