When comes a performancepatch?

(sirius89) #1

Topic says it all.

The new patch is nice and all but i’am still not able to play your game without having FPS drops down to 10-20.

Will there EVER be a performance patch or did you gave up on that?

I wanna play this game finally and many others too and you patch NOTHING for performance? Are you serious? -.-

I really doubt that Catalyst 11.6 will magically fix everything,so,any infos?

(F. Otzenknecht) #2

I think the current patch already did fix (m)any performance issues…? I have the impression that my game runs smoother now and other people reported the same if i recall that correctly.

Maybe you should post your DxDiag log in the TechHelp section…

ATI or nVidia?

(kilL_888) #4

yea. the current patch is much, very much appreciated. lots of good stuff requested by the cmmunity. all those who doubted splash damage dont listen to the community shall be quit now for all eternity.

but i too am still waiting for a constant 60fps. theres no need for me to post yet another dx diag. enough people with my spec have already done this.

im a bit afraid that the major ati issue is not communicated through splash damage. i feel like everything is mentioned and fixed, but ati users are kinda left behind. thats my feeling right now.

guess we all have to wait for catalyst 11.6 and see what has been improved. i also hope we get some explanation for the ati issues by splash damage. it just cant be. i am able to play every current game (except crysis 1 of course  ) at 60 or at least a constant 40 fps. crysis2 even runs almost always constantly with 60fps on my machine. of course with a lot more features enabled than brink.

Been there,done that.Multiple times i think.

What’s the point of posting it if they don’t care anyway. >.<

I’am on 11.5 atm and i won’t go through all the hotfixes again.

EDIT:Sorry,forgot to mention,i’am on a HD5770.

Seriously SD i want a answer now!Do you give a **** about your costumers which can’t play the game now or are you trying to fix it?

(legend123) #6

I have an hd5770 as well. get 40+ fps all the time.

are you using crossfire?

(F. Otzenknecht) #7

Dont want to offend - just a serious question:

Why do people still buy ATI cards? They’ve always (at least as long as i can remember [10 years]) had their issues in both areas hardware and software. I gave ATI a chance twice. The first time - like 7 years ago - I returned it because of poorly implemented drivers and problems with massive heat problems. The second time - like 2 years ago - I returned it because of poorly implemented driver installers and a REALLY loud fan and massive heat problems…

ATI is dead (at least for me) and I won’t touch any product made by them any time again - unless Nvidia stops making such great devices.

Again: don’t want to offend or say that it’s your fault using ATI but the ATI problems are well known over the past decade and people are still trapped buying their crap. Is it only the price? I don’t get it…

/offtopic

For the same reason people buy AMD CPU’s instead of Intel, often you get more “bang per buck” and certainly my ATi HD4890 performs brilliantly in every game I play, except Brink.

/ontopic

I think CPU is a major factor in this game, on my rig the difference in FPS on high, medium and low detail is not as large as I’d expect (maybe 20 FPS max. difference high <–> low), which leads me to believe GPU performance isn’t the issue.

I overclocked my Phenom II X3 from stock 2.8Ghz per core to 3.4Ghz per core and got about the same FPS on high detail as I did at stock speeds on low detail (unfortunately it wasn’t very stable so I’ve put it back to stock).

OP, what CPU do you have ? (also, the HD5770 isn’t a great card tbh)

:infiltrator:
Two things. First one is, I’ve never had any ATI specific problems for years, no hardware problems, no driver problems. That combined with generally more bounce to the ounce should be enough to justify the usage of an ATI card. This game seems to be a bit more of an issue but that leads us to point 2.

I am still pretty sure that this isn’t an ATI problem. Sure, with 10-20 fps there should be a problem with drivers and / or the card itself. But for the rest, it’s a CPU problem. My graphics card (HD5870) and my buddie’s (GTX275) are running on 60% load max. I don’t think there is something wrong with the drivers, the game itself is too console-like. Why? All of my cores have a 90%+ load while playing, while my card is “idling” at 60% ingame (99% in menu…) and the game takes aprox. 400-600 MB RAM. 400-600 MB! Every mediocre shooter has at least the double amount nowadays.

Consoles have small RAM and tend to have multiple cores, not even always specific ones for graphics and the rest, but sometimes for both and it’s the developers duty to assign tasks to those cores. What I think here is, that the PC CPU suffers from that idea while the graphics card isn’t addressed enough and the RAM usage is less than noteworthy.

Did you try to run FRAPS while playing? Although I set it up for a 60 FPS cap, the FPS dropped from 70-100 to 20-40 during the same scene just due to FRAPS being activated. After stopping recording FPS went back to normal. Reason is the extremely important CPU usage, since the game gives my CPU (as I mentioned before) 90%+ load and FRAPS is kinda CPU hungry, too, which leads to massive FPS drops while the graphics card idles at 60% load max.

The game is poorly designed on the PC, that’s not an ATI problem. Try to play the game with a 2,83 GHz Q9550 not overclocked and with a 4,2 GHz Sandy Bridge processor overclocked and the same graphics card. The difference will be much bigger than between a HD5870 and a GTX580 or different ATI drivers while keeping the same CPU.

If the games use less resources, that’s better because people with less RAM or a worse GPU will then be able to run the game. If you really want to load your GFX card, to heat your room or such, try to enable x8 anti-aliasing.

As such, having higher clock speeds does benefit the game.

(kilL_888) #11

i dont know about that.

i give you an example. in security tower, the big outside area, drops down to 20-30 fps. no matter what resolution i use. no matter if i turn ambient occlusion on or off, nor shadows, nor anything.

how do you explain this?

i have a ati hd4870, q9400 @2.67ghz, 4gb ddr2 ram @667mhz. i can run any other game just fine. crysis2 looks awsome and runs pretty smooth. theres depth of field, ambient occlusion, shadows, hdr, color grading and all that stuff. in brink i have to disable everything to make it run a bit decent at least. but i can do what i want to, the dropdowns in larger spaces still persist.

(Qbix) #12

First part

Are you kidding me? I didn’t buy my graphics card to have 60% of its performance. It doesn’t have to be 100% all the time of course, but 90% would be ok. The radiator is on the card for a reason you know. I don’t think the game artificially cuts off the graphics card’s performance if it should run even on a weaker system, I think you agree on that?

Otherwise it would cut of the performance of low equipment as well, which would be against what you think the game wants. So, if it doesn’t, the only explanation left (ATI drivers don’t apply since it effects nVidia cards as well) is that the GPU isn’t addressed enough and/or the CPU has to handle too much, so the graphics card CAN’T be used fully. Meaning the CPU is limiting the overall performance. And that’s BS.

Second part

So you agree with me? Then don’t take it so lightly, it should be obvious that this game needs CPU performance that doesn’t equal the visual and structural quality. Look at Crysis 2. BRINK doesn’t look bad, but not better than Crysis 2. Yet Crysis 2 is more GPU based than BRINK, enabling me to play it much more fluently than it’s possible with BRINK in some sceneries. And my GPU doesn’t suffer from that you know.

My CPU doesn’t suffer from playing BRINK as well, again, the radiator is there for a reason. But the tasks assigned to the CPU are not balanced. The more players are on a map the more the fps drop. On Security Tower and Shipyard it’s the worst, sometimes I have only ~30 FPS and always at the same positions.

btw. your arguments don’t go well with each other. If people with worse CPUs should be able to play as well as you say, why should someone use the CPU heavy id Tech 4 engine? Doesn’t make sense in any way.

That’s what I am talking about. Changing graphic options doesn’t help a bit since the GPU isn’t the limiting factor. The CPU is. I bet ppl with a 4,2 GHz CPU and the same setting and graphics card like you have will have more FPS than you.

my q9550 never seems to run above 75-80% with this game.

(Qbix) #14

Don’t throw at me with the exact percentages, I am not at home. Still, CPU limits and no driver or game update will change that

EDIT: Ok, I should clarify the CPU limitation argument. OF COURSE the CPU limits if the graphical settings are low. That’s normal and totally understandable and that’s the matter with every game. It’s like playing Crysis 2 on lowest settings possible and in 800x600 - there should be no way the GPU could limit the performance.

Problem with BRINK is, however, that changing graphical options doesn’t change the FPS, which means that my GPU seems perfectly able to handle the game. And which means, that the CPU is limiting - but not only the normal way, but also in a negative way. It seems to be too much sometimes. 30 FPS with a HD5870? I ask you! Probably with Tesselation and 8xSSAA. But not in BRINK. Obviously the CPU has too much to handle compared to other games (which look better).

I would say that Brink being a Doom3 engine then the fluctuating fps you are expriencing is map based rather than hardware…things like map portaling and texture positioning and sizing can have an impact on your fps at various locations in any given map…

SD could really do with much better game and map optimization overall.

(TheLuckynr7) #16

I’m still having issues aswell, hotfix 11.5b works stable until it starts to drop to 10-20 FPS. I am currently running 11.5 with 30-60 FPS without dropping down to 10-20 FPS.

did you download and use the latest CAP? i havent tried 4 yet but 3 seemed to make a difference.

(TheLuckynr7) #18

I will try that and report back

(TheLuckynr7) #19

How do I properly install the CAP? do I have to uninstall the 11.5b hotfix first?
SD could really do with much better game and map optimization overall.
balance wise, yes, but not performance wise. i cant explain myself why nvidia users with a card thats equally powerful as a 4870 gets its constant 60fps.

its not the maps itself where the problem is. its bad programming and/or bad drivers.

if it would really be the maps then tuning down the resolution would definetely fix the problem, which it doesnt though. if i get 10 fps more in that one area when i tune down my res from 1680x1050 to 800x600, then something is wrong. and it is not my pc itself.

edit: @TheLuckynr7. the CAP is independent from the actual drivers. just install the CAP and youre fine. no need to uninstall previous caps or drivers.
