What's Your Aim Style and Settings?

(bubblesKeyboard) #21

Also, I don’t use a mousepad (hence the 100cm 360 i used to use lol). I’ve been grilled about this before, but I’m not convinced it will make a huge difference. My Deathadder on a wooden desk works fine and there’s never been any issues or inconsistencies.

What do you guys think? Does it really make a difference and in what aspect?

I’ve already talked about my mouse sens in the other thread. I’m one of an heretic using very high sens and strong acceleration (usually a logitech G3 at 2000 dpi, strongest acceleration available in setpoint, sensitivity set to mid range in-gamme). And this never had a big influence on my accuracy. Maybe some good old remains of Q3 where high sens was giving me an edge on reaction times while not affecting too much my accuracy. As long as you don’t feel uncomfortable and still have a pretty good aim, I don’t really know why people stick with 400 dpi settings. It’s just a personal feeling. What makes me kind of laugh, is that some people use mice which cost more than 80€/$ (no difference atm) at 5% of their potential. Better get one at 15 and spend the rest partying with your friends :stuck_out_tongue:

(Kroad) #25

expensive mice aren’t expensive because of their dpi, so no, they’re not using them at 5% of their potential

It’s so private isn’t it?

I use the pink medium dot- purely from habit from past SD games, but mostly for the reason you mentioned. The biggest help for me was to boost my contrast and sharpness on my monitor (120 or 144hz also helps a lot). I also set my hitmarkers in game to .2 or something very small, simply because it identifies friendly objects as well as showing the true crosshair location on some bugged ironsight animations atm. I usually just rely on the classic hitbeeps for everything else.

As for mousepads… I used to play on a laptop, wifi, with a wireless mouse on a book lmao. As long as your mouse doesn’t skip you are fine really- laser mice tend to skip more depending on the surface. Best way to go though is having everything wired with a big pad to both save your desk from wear as well as having consistent surface friction if you want to be picky.

NEVER forget about ergonomics (google it :stuck_out_tongue: )

I already have tendinitis in the right shoulder due to a bad posture when using pc/mouse and playing classical guitar, it really sux to feel yourself broken =( , so, as in sex, be safe :stuck_out_tongue:

I dont understand what you mean by hitmarkers and how they identify friendlies

(bubblesKeyboard) #30

You don’t buy mice for their DPI lol.

Most Quake players don’t go under 25cm/360, and saying you use 2000 DPI doesn’t mean much without your ingame sens. I use 3500 DPI and 1.6 in game (0.4 in Quake) and thats like a 29-30cm/360 but from the sounds of it you use higher. Besides flick shotting with the Rail, high sens never really seemed to be logical. Its much easier to track with a medium sens like mine IMHO.

Also, mouse acceleration? I’ve never seen a competitive Quake player ever use mouse accel except if their mouse had it built in. That’s pretty hardcore.

The fastest I’ve ever seen is WinD Nvidia 3D with his supposed 5500 DPI and 10 in game sens which is like a 1.5 inch 360…
…LOL

If you enable hitmarkers they are mostly visual distraction imo, however if you lower the scale to something very small they solve two things. (1) Putting your crosshair over friendly stations or players will turn the marker blue. (2) The hitmarker will show the true crosshair position in some of the bugged IS animations (k121, revolvers, etc). Hope that makes more sense.

(son!) #32

Mouse accel is common among quake players actually, don’t know if it’s as popular now as it was in 05ish, but it’s not too surprising to see it.

Using mouse accel generates bad habits. It was common many years ago but now it is not because of the lack of consistency it gives. Many players like strenx and He4rTL3sS have gone back to mice without built in accel because of this

Are they off by default? I use a white dot and mine has never changed colour

Hit markers may be off by default, not sure. It’s the hitmarkers that will show up as a blue X shape, not the actual dot.

(Szakalot) #36

hitmarkers on by default

hitbeeps off by default

(Szakalot) #38

It makes a non-linear relationship between your hand’s movements and what’s happening on the screen. It will be much harder for your brain to learn how much to move your hand in order to achieve the desired effect. Basically you will, once in a while, under/over shoot your targets, it generates inconsistency.

(INF3RN0) #39

What Szak says is true since you’re basically adding an inconsistent variable in the mix. I’ve still seen plenty of people with really weird setups or settings perform well, but when it comes to tracking aim… mouse accel is probably the worst thing to use unless you’re a maso*chist >:)

(Kroad) #40

mouse accel on high sens is useless, if you’re playing at 2000dpi and medium ingame sens then you don’t ever need to move your mouse faster anyway

here’s a video by kovaak explaining the advantages of some mouse accel, that it allows you to have low sens but still be effective in close range https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KORL144_co8

i really don’t think it’s worth it in any way but it’s probably the only slightly good argument for mouse accel
