What's up with the Stockholm servers?

(ThunderZsolt) #1

So I’ve noticed a while ago, that sometimes everything is fine while playing DB, but sometimes I’m teleporting meters (not just around the EV), and have ~150ms ping.

  • First, in EU I shouldn’t have 150ms ping on any server, because of the distances aren’t that long here.
  • Second, 150ms ping shouldn’t make everyone rubberbanding around constantly.
  • Third, this means that some major screwup is going on.

I started to check which servers were bad, and it was always EU Cent (Stockholm) ****** - the ****** is the number of the server.

It is easy to prove that those are problematic. Just open the server browser. Here’s a screenshot I’ve found:
https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/856110024765343875/47318BD95EED276F2A2A369440FD1E85B8B5B1EC/

I would like to highlight 3 ping values:

  • Frankfurt - 42ms
  • Stockholm - 149ms
  • Washington - 124ms

This gets even more interesting when you consider the actual distances from Budapest.

  • Frankfurt - 811 km / 504 miles
  • Stockholm - 1317 km / 819 miles
  • Washington - 7343 km / 4563 miles

To be fair, I can play fine on

  • Amsterdam - 48ms
  • Moscow - 86ms

Funny thing is, that on Stockholm servers are players with 10-20ms ping, who have no problems at all, telling me that “your internet is bad” or “you suck and try to blame the servers”
It looks like a routing issue to me.

My proposed solution:
similar to selecting maps, you should be able to select server locations (in my case Frankfurt and Amsterdam)

Also, whoever thinks that Stockholm is in central europe, should look at a map. I’d literally play on any other server in EU (including London, which has 125ms ping) than Stockholm, which supposed to be the go-to server in my region

i dont know why but it seems SD misnamed some server

like back few weeks ago hongkong was 12 ping and singapore is 60 ping for me even tho im closer to singapore.

it was fixed when i told @stayfreshshoe about it.

and now its whacked up again with all asia server (both hongkong and singapore) is in 50-59 ping

(Melinder) #3

@GatoCommodore Perhaps there is some work being done on the telecommunication system leading to you being routed differently.

(Press E) #4

Yeah, Seattle servers are the same for me, even though I’m super close to them. I have to choose LA or Chicago servers instead, just because Seattle ones are so inconsistent.

They seem to work fine for most people though, so idk.

(Nail) #5

I think they should take a couple weeks and work on the server binaries

(AlbinMatt) #6

I think you wusses should stop complaining and ascend to the revolutionary Turn Based First Person Shooter gamemode of DB.

Seriously, four digit ping feels normal now.

(Artyrim) #7

Stockholm is a strange server. Playing in Moscow server with more ping is better than Stockholm

(HammerOfDawn21) #8

Maybe somebody kidnapped that server…

Then we should crowdfund the ransom

I have the exact same issue since last friday. My Internet is fine. I am from EU and have normally around 50-60 ping. Since last friday, it goes up to 130-140 from 5pm to end of day. Everything is fine before 5pm.
Routing issues or traffic shaping. My ISP is fine. I though I was the only one as the people I play with are not affected.

Those Stockholm servers should be in Alice Springs… specifically, in Pine Gap

2 years ago:

Traced them later and found out it weren’t the Amsterdam but the Stockholm ones. They’ve been shit right from the start, and SD kept them even after Nexon. But the 150ms-Ping-update came only a short while ago.
Same stuff with the part of the London-servers placed in Maidenhead, only 4ms more ping than the “real” London-ones, but hitregistration is fucked up, although not as bad as the Stockholm-servers.

Who would have expected it to be a bad thing placing servers in countries which are connected by some cables on the edge of their capacity in real-time-terms, not mentioning highest priorities for banks, stock markets, and so on, doing their syncs and backups over them. And on top, we got also our european problem, to many providers.
But hey, it’s a beta and the seeing the asian/australian stuff, the european servers could be somewhere near the middle-east, routed through s/e europe, so I guess, it’s ok .

Btw, some nice writeup how riot solved the problems on their side, quite interesting.

@Deathi very interesting read on the LoL article.
This highlights that the problem is not something special, and others have solved it before.

The real question is, why do we have servers in different locations, when we can’t choose them in ranked/CMM?

(Noir) #15

Yesterday was weird: I played with 60 ping from 5 to 10 pm untill my connection icon appeared red for a second and then I had 120 ping till I stopped playing. I haven’t been disconnected from the game. It jumped back to 80 for 5 min and went to 120 again.
Traffic shaping for sure.

(D'@athi) #16

Probably the cables from Copenhagen and Stockholm to “continental”-europe filled up with high-prio-traffic, and the lesser priority traffic was routed through Moscow and then on to western-europe? Would at least explain the ping (Stockholm-Moscow is a direct line, that’s why Valve also was/is? using Stockholm as a colocation for their eastern-europe-servers).

Got the same thing in times. Normaly the ping on the Stockholm-servers nowadays is 55-65ms (still packetlossing, warping, getting stuck when beeing shot, my shots only seeming to do half their damage, even if they hit, and so on, and so on), and suddenly it switches to a stable 155-165ms (with all the same shit still going on).
But you can’t be sure, as we don’t know who is really routing when and where, got contracts with whom, and so on.

Beware, it’s kinda upside-down, not really to scale and from 2012, but was the only more complete map I’ve quickly been able to find.

@stayfreshshoe

I have this issue with London servers, beginning around Monday. I used to have atound 55-60 ping, now I have ~140 ping and a constant yellow connection icon. RIP my leave-free record in CMM :frowning:

I tested my ping to London server using www.speedtest.net - 40ms. I looked up where the game is connecting: ec2-52-214-233-24.eu-west-1.compute.amazonaws.com.

My ping to this machine is normal:

People from many different locations are impacted. In my country, people do not play DB much, yet, CS:GO players report the same. Not sure SD is able to do anything if the issue is due to traffic shaping, and considering the symptoms, it surely is (unless your issue is different. As far as I am concerned, everything is fine before Prime Time. Then I can only play on Russian and Swedish servers cause they give me a better ping than UK ones, when I am in Lisbon.

Fucking network.

(ThunderZsolt) #19

@DefaultSettings I mentioned in the original post, that a server select/ping limit in matchmaking would solve the problem mostly, and is much easier to implement than analyzing the full network of the world.

(Noir) #20

Things were much better for me yesterday with a ping around 60 on most EU servers. Hope it’s better for you as well guys as it’s a really annoying issue.
