Every time I start the game, I get the dialog box asking me if I want to update, So far I always say no, but the number of older version servers seems to be redcucing. Is the 2.6 version still f’d up or what?

many people are waiting on leagues to switch. Otherwise, there is no reason to stay on 2.56.
It is also fairly easy to have 2 install or switch between versions.

You should set cl_autoupdate to 0 (either via console or via the option menu - “Check for Updates on Start-Up”) in your 2.56 installation to prevent the dialog box poping up.

Follow what your fave servers do.
You can always install ET a second time and update one of them, or try one of the numerious “ET2.60 + 1.02 on one install” methods that have been posted around and about. Personally I prefer ET2.60 and already dislike going back to 2.56 servers, but otoh most of the better servers (my choices anyway) are still on ET2.56, and probably will be until an official 2.60 ETPro and the leagues switch over.
FWIW I dont think any servers need to wait for an official 2.60 ETPro now (if that’s their only reason for delaying), the current beata version seems very stable and all they seem to be doing now is feature addition.
