What motivates you to keep playing?

(Cesmode) #21

What motivates me? The fact that there is NO progression system other than a slow accumulation of credits to unlock new mercs.

This is one game where I have a ton of fun and I dont want or need any motivation to do any specific activity in the game. I don’t want to be encouraged or persuaded to participate in anything that I dont want to do and I certainly do not want to feel obligated to log in every day and play for hours on end just to keep up with progression.

I play for fun and have a blast, currently just shy of lvl 11(started back in June I think). My buddies and I have a blast for this very reason.

Leave progression to MMOs and ARPGs…

Now, if some way the game offered you more cosmetic alteration progression, that is something I would be for.

Spent more time watching Overwatch videos this week than I have playing Dirty Bomb. I realised a while ago I was only playing for the credits, once my missions/dailies were complete I would happily log off and play something else.

The game just isn’t that much fun. The constant supply of low level/bad players in casual is killing the game for me. I would have hoped that a month or two after open beta began, the crap players would improve, but it seems many of them just quit instead, to be replaced by new players that don’t know the classes/maps.

Haven’t tried competitive with the new AC yet, so no idea if that has improved or not, but I have little faith, the fact they rushed it out in such a short space of time makes me think it is just a band aid as opposed to a real solution, but we will see.

In short, I am almost at the point where I will be uninstalling DB, the one game in 50 where I actually have fun is not enough to put up with the other 49 which are a complete chore one way or the other.

You’re speaking my mind. And now that easy classes like Nader and Rhino have been buffed, that skill-related recoil compensation and spread pattern learning have been removed from the equation it just feels like the experience edge is gone and any idiot can kill you, just like the recent call of duty’s which I stopped playing for that reason.

Why don’t developers realize that the FPS genre is not for the masses, but for an elite. Heck, every genre is for a specific group of players. Trying to make it digestive for multiplayer afraid people just ruins it for those who actually enjoy a challenge.

(LifeupOmega) #24

Somehow this is exactly like TF2 after it went F2P, just masses of terrible players who don’t help you at all, play stupid classes and die 30 times and get maybe 4 kills if they’re lucky. Every. Single. Game.

Can’t even solo hero in this game half the time either - which isn’t a bad thing mind you, but when you’re stuck with a bunch of potatoes you just have to stick through it and then get disillusioned with the game, and then go play something else which isn’t as infuriating.

And not to mention just how terrible gun play feels after this patch. Really didn’t expect it to feel this drastic.

Insta-gibbing players & watching them cry & whine about it. - LOVE IT. #Vassili

But yeah, the game does need something to work towards besides the standard load out and levels… Levels don’t really mean much and after collecting all the mercs… you think “Now what?” Personally, when I finish completing something and there’s nothing else to do… I get bored.

Not sure if we have a Kill/Death ratio stat but that would be cool. I remember striving on making that better in other FPS’s.

(yusayu) #26

Im just saying (and repeating what a very wise friend once told me) that:
“If a game isnt fun for its gameplay and you need to reset your level multiple times to have any motivation to continue playing, then maybe the game just isnt that good.”

(Cesmode) #27

Those of you that are currently playing DB for progression and uber competitive play in public quick match games are just kidding yourself. The game is barely a few months into open BETA. And already youre expecting new people coming into the game to be able to grab 20 headshots in a game by lvl 5 or 6.

Trust me, I scream at the monitor just like you. Last week I was playing a game on Chapel…proxy ran by with the objective in phase 3. I was dead and spectating an Aura…she literally stared at the proxy for 2-3 seconds, turned around and ran away. Imagine that.

But you know what? It was hilarious and we had a huge laugh about it on vent.

Try playing DB for fun instead of 4srs progrsshn.

The main issue I have though, is that the development team and the publisher seem to be at cross purposes. On the one hand, the devs have made a skill based competitive game, yet the publishers seem more interested in catering to the masses of bad players that infest F2P games. It has always been difficult to take the game seriously as a competitive shooter.

For example, the buffs and nerfs to weapons. Many of the loadout cards are poor choices compared to the others, can we really be sure the balance changes are there for competitive balance, or are they being implemented because Nexon want to swap which merc/card combo is currently the best (in the hopes of people spending money to buy them)? The whole loadout card system is flawed from the ground up, because it was implemented for the wrong reasons.

You could spend money to buy a loadout card only to see it nerfed in some way at a later date. It wouldn’t be hard to swallow if it did actually improve the balance, but if it was changed deliberately to make it obsolete in the hopes of making more money with the other cards, that is something else altogether.

This game also has the exact same problem that HAWKEN and Loadout had, you jump into a match, get backfilled onto the team that is getting steam rolled, and because the time between matches takes so bloody long, everyone leaves to join a new match as it tends to be faster. It is very, very rare that a match ends and everyone hangs around because it was a balanced match and everyone enjoyed it.

Playing with friends is the only thing that motivates me atm.

(Black_Bob) #30

Competitive play, friends and hope that dirty bomb starts off an actual league which spans a few months each season rather than cups which lasts just one night.

I like small communities where you get to know people.

If dirty bomb really wants a loyal player base it would benefit from clan run public servers, if people have an attachment to a server/community they will keep coming back to play like in TF2 and all the many many awesome games before it.

Currently on this thread it seems like people are bored of killing new strangers just since they don’t have a good public server to always go on with a strong community, or enough friends to play comp.

(Amerika) #31

I play this game because it’s fun. It’s a shooter and I like MP shooters that have a high skill ceiling and great movement. I do not require a carrot to keep playing beyond simply wanting to have fun and personally improve. But I also come from Q3 and later on a few other games where we always played the same few maps over and over and that is what we did.

I understand that some people need more. Especially if they grew up with games that were all about leveling in some way. But I personally don’t need it.

(Fleshpound) #32
At the moment, I have nothing fun to do in DB. Just seems like “Find a match, kill people, win or lose, repeat 3 times” which isn’t really fun for me. I want to play but there’s nothing for me to do because there is no advanced progression system either and the current one has no rewards tied to it.

So what motivates you to keep playing?
Mercs. I want to catch them all. And btw:My today normal drop from case was that best fletcher loadout and another bronze Fragger with m4.

(Ghosthree3) #33

I play partly because it’s the only game other than QL right now that seems to have a high skill cap while also not only being fast but penalising slow movement instead of rewarding it.

The other reason is just trying to be better every time I play. I enjoy the self challenge of getting better and I really want to improve to such an extent that I’m an unstoppable machine. Easier said than done though, and sometimes I get carried away with using easy tricks to win games instead of disciplining myself to refine my techniques.

(Kyn) #34

I have 318 hours on Dirty Bomb, got all mercs and almost all loadouts I want. Yesterday I chose to spend my credits on my first ever Cobalt. I traded all my left-over lead cards into better ones, all the way up to gold ones. I still had to trade in two decent gold loadouts I already had, to get the Cobalt. It turned out to be an awful loadout - all the credits & cards down the drain. Good times.

Nothing really encourages me to play, other than getting 50k credits ready for the next merc.

What cobalt did you trade up for? I traded up for my 3rd cobalt last night and I actually got the one I wanted which makes a difference lol.

I agree, spending money to buy a loadoat or a merc only to see it nerfed into the ground is not good. I am always in favor of cash shops that provide aesthetic options. Much safer.

The second paragraph I’ll disagree with only because most games that I play, everyone sticks around. Maybe you just get unlucky. I think, for me, its rarer to see entire teams leave after a match.

Well said.

I grew up playing Q1 and Q3a as well. You play to get better yourself/skill, not for any means of progression.

BTW, think we were on the same server last night  I remember the awkward spelling of ‘America’.

(srswizard) #39

Training my aim, timing and positioning + trying to get better at predicting enemy movement.
Basically just practicing things that I can improve upon, as an individual.

Just so If I ever get the game to run at a steady 144FPS, my body will be ready, and I can reach nirvana.

(MTLMortis) #40

Not sure I’m going to agree with you on the high skill ceiling. ARMA has a high skill ceiling, Battlefield 4 has a moderate degree of skill required based on loadout. Dirty Bomb is more of cartoon shooter like TF2.
