What is your favourite squad of mercs?

(Monty) #1

For me:

Proxy: A fast running engineer with those lovely mines. When it comes to rushing the objective, or just hiding behind the EV to repair it, this is the preferred merc for me. (Game mode experience)

Nader: Granades clear rooms and mob attacks. Sometimes they can even take out distant snipers, or at least suppress their fire for a moment. And the suicide is not that bad either, although people are starting to learn how to avoid it. And although it is not the ideal, the granades can also stop the EV. (Plain old fashioned kills)

Skyhammer: Ammo packs usually net me 280 points of support when I spawn to an area, thus making the support missions one of the easiest to complete. Airstrike can at times wipe out the entire enemy team along with the EV, and the riffles do reasonably well with distance. (Support experience)

These three mercs are what I prefer to use above all. At times I feel almost insidious when I place the mines. Not to mention how I am starting to get a hang of the granade launcher flight arcs bounce angles. (Though my aim is still ways off from what I had during the old W:ET days, I loved those engineers with their granade riffles.) And yeah, airstrikes. (Bit sad that you need to be alive long enough for the strike to go off, no suicide runs for me with skyhammer.)

Additionally the above squad enables me to fulfill almost any role in the team. Well, the composition is short of a medic… But, medic mercs seem to be popular with other players. And why wouldn’t they be when in skilled hands those are almost impossible to kill?

So, what is your favourite squad? Why have you gone for it? What perks it has for you?

I typically always have Aura in my squad. She’s my favourite medic thus far (I’m keenly awaiting the chance to try out Phoenix) and I always like having a healer in my party. I never like to assume other people will have a medic or choose to use them! Plus it’s a role I feel comfortable performing. Yes I can play other mercs well and score pretty decently with them but I’m familiar with supporting others.

After this it depends on what the map is and whether I’m attacking or defending. Typically I’ll always have Proxy front and centre. Her engineering skills are often invaluable when it comes to using C4/repairing EVs, which are used on the majority of maps at the moment. So far she’s also my strongest merc for killing and her mines play a heavy part that. The area denial is sweet and if one’s tripped but I haven’t earned a kill, I know there’s a weak enemy asking to be shot.

From here, it varies a bit. If I’m feeling a need for an aggressive playstyle, Nader joins the squad. She’s the ‘assault’ merc I feel most comfy using. If I’m feeling more lax then I like to bring a recon merc, either Vasilli/Phantom. Thing is I always feel like they’re the most situational mercs to bring and I know how popular they are too.

Sawbonez - I find that a lot of people don’t have or use a medic so I use him when the group needs a medic.

Nader - When things need to die and I need to control the area from a distance I use Nader.

Rhino - Close range suppression, when I have a team full of skyhammer that never tosses ammo and my preferred annoying merc killer. Swap to Proxy if I’m bored or I run into a few groups that have no mechanic.

Sawbonez -> Healer and undying killing machine.
Proxy -> Closely related to the common house fly, plus moines = fun!.
Kira -> Uhm. She controls a lazer-satellite. And has some of the deadliest weapons around. She’s all kinds of awesome.

Too bad, so sad. You are dead to me, you are sashimi

FRAGGER
FRAGGER
FRAGGER
because i need nothing else… really…

(Hadouken) #6

Skyhammer, Sawbonez, and Bushwhacker.

going to replace Skyhammer with stoker once he’s released again.

(SaulWolfden) #7

Usually I have Bushwhacker/Proxy, Fragger, and Sawbonez.

I switch between Proxy and Bushwhacker and am still unsure which I prefer of the two. Proxy is faster and has mines, but Bushwhacker has more health and has a turret. Fragger tends to be reliable for me, though I think I’ll switch him out with Stoker once they add him depending how he plays. Sawbonez is permanently in my squad as I like his high health, medpacks, and defibrillator along with his weapons.

(capriRocket) #8

sparks and fletcher. third slot open for missions or just messing around, often rhino, currently more kira.

(XavienX) #9

I change from time to time, but I always have a merc that focuses on killing like Phantom, Vassili or Fragger. Sometimes I carry a medic which is usually Aura. And I always have a engie, Fletcher or Bushwhacker.

I try to run a balanced squad with one damage dealer, medic and engineer each.

My choices are influenced by the fact that I hate shotguns. I prefer mid-range combat and want all my mercs to have a chance 1-on-1. Pub is not a… coordinated place, to say the least. Sometimes when everyone else is playing TDM you have to go solo and do the damn uhb-jek-tivz, and usually there’s someone with lead deficiency in the way.

Nader - main damage dealer. The grenade launcher is such a flexible weapon. One hit kills, area denial, decoy, diversion - just lovely. The key is to master switching between melee for fast movement, grenade launcher when Granaten! will explode on contact and SMG for close/long range. And then there’s martyrdom - when you go around a corner and find yourself against an Aura with healing station and two other mercs instead of thinking “well, crap” you grin and go for the “Blast Master” badge  But joking aside, if you learn to do direct hits with grenades and use level knowledge to shoot grenades blind of walls/etc, she becomes a killing machine. Martyrdom is just icing on the cake (shoutout to all Phantoms!). She’s one of the mercs that’s easy to learn but hard to master (I’m not claiming that I mastered playing her!).
Best loadouts, both with Crotzni:
CR81 Superb Operative - better grenades for everyone!
CR83 Standard Operative - for better gunplay

Sawbonez. Best loadout - CR73 Companion Operative - Crotzni, Potent Packs, Mechanic, Get Up. This guy can do everything - shoot people, rev people, do objectives (at least when Mechanic starts to work, because now it doesn’t, right?), attack, defend, and stay alive through all that. I like that he also uses Crotzni, so midgame switching between him and Nader is seamless.

Third spot is a tie between Bushwhacker and Proxy.
I like playing Bushwhacker on defense for obvious reasons - more HP and a frickin’ turret that when positioned right wreaks havoc allowing you to shoot at distracted enemies.
Best loadout - I don’t think there’s one that’s clearly best. Very different SMGs, augments for combat or for the turrent - plenty to pick from.
But I also like running around the map like a caffeinated ADHD maniac as Proxy. I really like the Hochfir - accurate and face-melting if you can score headshots. For some reason it feels much worse on Nader. I’m not sure why. Probably slower movement speed has something to do with it.
Best loadout - KE53 Elite Operative - Hochfir, Guardian Angel, Drilled, and Quick Draw. Guardian Angel saved my ass many times while repairing the EV.

Proxy/Nader/Sparks or Sawbonez

(GeekyNerd_FTW) #12

Sawbonez- I feel like Sparks is a medic, aura is a combat medic, and sawbonez is a SUPER combat medic, sawbonez is my favorite, can easily heal teammates and easily kill enemy’s, the only problem is that he heals himself slow.

Skyhammer- I play him on chapel and bridge to easily take out the EV, also, I’m pretty good at getting a full wipe with the air strike, also, got a pretty fair set of weapons.

Fragger, I normally play him when I play 8v8 or 7v7 IF I’m not doing well with sawbonez, and again, I feel like I’m REALLY good at cooking grenades exactly correct and getting many kills with just one.

(Monty) #13

Thanks for your replies. It has been insightful. Also, a cheaky way of bumping this post up for more replies!

(Edzer) #14

Sparks - Just love sparks for the laser headshots.
Arty - No squad is complete without Party Arty.
Vassili - Tbh the previous two slots didn’t matter because I’m a Vassili main.

(VincentRJaeger) #15

My squad consists of Fletcher/Sawbonez, followed by Skyhammer/Fragger and lastly Vassili.

I work under a personal concept you could say; Primary is Teamwork/Objective-Oriented mercs, Secondary is Support/Damage-Oriented mercs, Tertiary ends up being Situational Support, in this case Vassili for up to 90% of my rounds.

(GregHouseMD) #16

Well, let’s see. I enjoy a great number of mercs, but if I were to put together a balanced squad that’d allow to me to do more or less anything, it’d look something like this:

Fragger: Grenades aren’t sexy, but they’re effective. Fragger does work, and he does it well.

Sparks: I don’t really enjoy Aura or Sawbonez. Sparks may not be the best medic, but the REVIVR is good, and more importantly fun.

Fletcher: Fletcher is pretty great. While not my favorite merc, he’s damned flexible. Fletcher is especially good for being able to assault objectives ( clearing mines and such ) before running in.

(FailJertsu) #17

Sawbonez and Skyhammer because I’m a good guy and want to help my atleast by throwing ammo and med packs.

I also play Proxy sometimes if I actually happen to have medics on my team already.

(exaltedLodge) #18

Fragger, Sawbonez and Phantom

(MiracleofSound) #19

Sparks: Able to revive people from afar and snipe others on the enemy team, she is able to take out just about anybody if you have the right loadout.

Sawbonez: A stronger medic with bigger medbags although without the ability to snipe revive. I use this class (With an obsidion loadout containing the Blishlok, Caulden, and Stiletto) to take out mercs who i cant kill or have trouble killing as Sparks. Also if the other team has like 3 Rhinos

Vasilli: Nothing much to say. Sniping (With bolt actions) if very helpful to your team (Depending on the map) Heartbeat sensors help if you need to find out how meny people are around a corner or in a room. Although i dont have a Machine Pistol as my secondary in my gold loadout (Although i would want one) Vasilli’s with revolvers such as the Smjuth can take care of themselves.

(Kaori1) #20

Sparks, Bush and Arty:

Sparks for OP revives.
Bush for Ninja caps.
Arty for lulz.

Since Phantom (and melee in general) is now pretty much useless hes been removed from my squad until further notice. Still doesn’t stop me from topping the charts though…however the game has become rather dull without him.
