What is the story behind the name "Splash Damage"

([ls.leodavinci]) #1

Time for a non-ETQW-related question… who came up with the name splash damage? Any story “behind” the name?
Does it have any special meaning for the developers/ owners ?!

  • message from God?
  • related to the games you played together (earthquake clan ?!)?
  • related to company mission?
  • a cool and fancy story ?

Splash damage weapons are effective against a group of enemies: dealing splash damage is easier than damaging all of them directly. They are also useful against moving targets at medium range — experienced players often fire at the ground near the opponent’s feet, ensuring that the target is hurt even if the munition does not score a direct hit. Conversely, a player using splash-damage weapons up close may take damage from his or her own shots (depending on the game being played). Damage usually decreases based on distance from the point of impact, and splash damage attacks generally do less direct damage than direct attacks.

Completely failing to answer this question, but it’s too good a story. A local office supplies company was trying to gain our custom, and enticed us with a free sample. Perhaps we’ll never really know if they deliberately changed the name so that we’d have to pay for something we could use or if they just couldn’t believe we were named what we were, but the sample they sent was a ballpoint pen bearing the proud logo “Splosh Drainage”.

I’ve thought we’re in the wrong business ever since.

Splash Damage as in splash damage of rockets in Quake maybe? Or as it says on the board on the top of the browser when you enter the splash damage website, Remember the Seamine. Seamine explodes (damage) and creates a large splash of water…

Hahahahaha thats a cracker and it also gives me an idea

Paul wanted to use the name because it represented a higher level of gaming in first person shooters.

For us old gamers, we remember the days when we learned how to use a mouse and circle strafe. We figured out we could rocket jump, and figured out that explosions cause splash damage (so it’s better to aim at an opponent’s feet rather than go with a headshot with a rocket).

It all seems like common knowledge, but back in the mid 90’s this was cool new stuff that set you apart from the random newbie in the server.

Plus Splash Damage sounded cooler than Circle Strafe.

I love to think about those good old days.
Like when they ask you in a job interview, where did you learn about TCP/IP ? And you think for one second, “well it was one of the options in DooM, which we played after high-school track practice, and none of us knew wtf a null-cable was, so we had to get crackin’ on the TCP/IP”, right before you answer, “in the hands-on college networking class, of course.”

You’re thinking of those embarassing ‘splash damage’ stains that happen when you stand too near the urinal when unloading 4 pints of fosters at high pressure …

“Splosh Drainage” sounds like a porno title. Maybe they had second thoughts of using that name?

Never really thought about what name really meant …
