What is RTCW Doing to My CPU?

(*[SfS]*OpTeRoN) #1

Everytime I play RTCW, or after I close it my computer will completely freeze and play a buzzing sound, I can only restart it from the button on the front panel in order to fix it.

Before this, my CPU heat sink fell off while I was playing RTCW and ended up frying my CPU and motherboard.

Anyone know why PC locks up though?

I have noticed that when I exit ET I have to reset the computer before I can go on the internet. Et totally locks up some connections. Tried to enter Taskmanager to end program and get initialization error. Happens about 9 0f 10 times. Any ideas?? Using XP home edition. Will give further info if needed
Thanks

your heat sink cant just fall off , it mustnt have been secured on in the first place = if you bought it from shop go back and complain

nah, theres a big mysterie behind all of this, ur computer cant fall apart just like that…

Its a conspiracy…

:suspicious:

No, I know, the heatsink isnt’ what the problem is, that was my fault.
Sorry if I explained wrong, but it does the same thing that happened when my heat sink fell off. It makes a buzzing sound and locks up.

It sounds like you are having system stability issues. Likely RTCW is only triggering them (because it puts a heavy load on your system) rather than actually causing them.

Make sure your cooling system is working correctly and free of dust.

Maybe too many panzer and airstrikes blew off the heatsink?

I think I found the problem.
It was a driver issue with my video card.

The newest nVidia drivers, 52.16, are not completely compatible with RTCW combined with my video card.

I downgraded back to 45.23 drivers, and the lock up has apparently dissapeared.

If anyone else has a GeForce4 Ti4200 and are using the 52.16 drivers tell us if you’re having the same probs with RTCW!

Yes, it’s a known issue with the new drivers. They only seem to work with the latest FX series cards, although the problem is only with PunkBuster enabled games. You could play ET on non-PB servers with the new drivers, or any other non-PB game, but assuming you want to play ET on PB enabled servers, stick with the 45.23 drivers for now.

I have a GeForce4 Ti4200 and the 52.16 Forceware drivers and I have not had any lockups and no inappropriate sounds whatsoever whether playing RTCW singleplayer or multiplayer.

If it’s an issue, then it’s probably unconfirmed.

But then again, On my machine I have disabled (or removed) all of the Nvidia services that weren’t essential to the normal functioning of my graphics card (I hate extras).

(Kendle) #11

Is that definately on PunkBuster enabled servers? The reports I’ve read seem to indicate it’s an issue with the 52.16 drivers and PunkBuster, rather than with the game.

i’d suggets a better/new cooler, a pc also locks up when its to heat

I tried Vanilla Wolf MP with PB disabled and then will PB enabled on my PC but disabled on the server and lastly on PB enabled servers, no problems for me.

I am pretty sure that the problem does happen on pb servers, but I think others are affected as well. I do know though that I tried connecting to about 4 different servers and had my computer lock up completely as soon as I joined a team. The problem went away after I uninstalled the new drivers and went back to version 45.23.

nothing happened when i played vanilla wolf, but to my surprise, i did have the halting happen to me with ET.

so much for those drivers.
