What is holding me back: CPU or GPU?

(meLonF) #21

Have you put your agp to 8x in your bios, also turned fast writes on and set your agp aperture to either 128mb or 256mb?

If you have’nt may i suggest you do as this will deffo help

not sure if i ever set these :weird: oops

will check them when i get home. thanks for the tip

(Maximus191) #22

Is the problem now fixed?
The suspense is killing me :stuck_out_tongue:

(pgh) #23

Ignore my post tbh

Playing last nite and everythings went tits up again and performance has dropped more than it had increased… back to the old now fs…

May want to change com_maxfps. The rest of the settings are just the fastest options from System config with low qual Sound, 11hz.

(meLonF) #24

havn’t tried yet

have had offical matches last couple of evenings so i havn’t had time

although i did notice i’m now hitting all-time lows of 60fps <— very annoying

(SenF|Doddsy) #25

hmmm… I too am having performance issues… I have just recently changed my old GeForce 2 board up to a Radeon 9600 with 256Mb…
Rest of my system spec (to the best of my rather limited techincal knowledge lol!)
Pentium 4 1.6
QDI Platinix-2 mobo
512Mb Ram

In my Bios there is no option to speed up the AGP x8 but there is on the ATI tools bit but that only goes up to x4. I have increased the AGP aperture to 128Mb on advice from a m8 and switched the open gl to performance over quality. However nothing seems to make a blind bit of difference. For exmaple - on battery looking up the beach with my old Geforce card I would get around 40fps (dreadful I know!), if i threw down an airstrike cannister that would plummet to 15fps as the fire rained down. With that card the game would set itself at 800x600. With the new card installed it sets itself to 1024 x 768 (although there is no real difference when setting it back to 800 x 600. Looking up the beach now is pretty much the same fps BUT with an airstrike cannister thrown the fps is barely affected… I have tried altering the in game system choices for the gfx to low quality etc etc but there is still no noticable difference… I am assuming its the mobo rather than the cpu as I believe that even a 1.6 P4 should be able to cope… arghhhhh!!!

(L2|B4tt3rY) #26

i used to beleive i had a tweaked cfg till a friend sent me his claiming it to improve my fps, so i tried it and now i cap at 76 whereas before i capped at 43, although it doesnt stay at a constant 76, on maps like radar etc it does drop below, it generally stays near that mark. meLon u know where to find me, PM me on irc and ill gladly send u the cfg

(meLonF) #27

will pm you when i’m at home. thx mate :>

btw, how was the unter elite match vs BiO?

(ToeD) #28

it was shit

(meLonF) #29

hmmm, okay i’m still not having any luck :frowning:

just ran 3dmark2001se and got a score of 19000 so i’m fairly confident my system is running ok, but ET still seems to run like a dog. I suspect it is my config as i’ve done a lot of tweaking to it in the past and i think i may have changed some settings that are killing my fps

can anyone here spot anything in here that might be killing my performance?

also, how do i turn mipmaping off (have looked on loads of sites but can’t find it anywhere :/)

thanks again for everyones help so far

seta r_dipslayrefresh “75”

Have you got your vertical synch turned on in your vidcard properties because if you have then 75fps is all your gonna get m8 .

Also if your on Windows xp it might pay to get a refresh rate fixer and manually set up your different monitor refreshes as i believe xp has a bug regarding this feature.

(meLonF) #31

thanks max,

checked v-sync, and its definately off. also tried setting the displayrefresh to various values but it had no effect on performance. The fps is fluctuating between 60-125 fps so it doesn’t seem to be a ‘cap’ from the refresh rate side

i also tried downclocking my video card (by a fair amount) and saw no change in the fps. I then set the gfx card back to normal and tried downclocking my cpu and the fps dropped even lower. After that i tried overclocking my cpu higher than usual (its now up to 3.2 ghz) and i’m now getting slightly better fps… so it seems its definately my cpu that is limiting my fps, but it just feels wrong that i can’t get a steady 125 fps @ 3.2 ghz :’(

(Maximus191) #32

Tbh you would probably be better off capping to 76fps anyway.
If you get too higher fluctuation in fps you can end up getting small connection interrupts.
For the record i have a intel pent 4 3ghz and an fx5900 vidcard plus a gig of ram and if i run 1152 res with everything maxed out eye candy wise i can usually hit a solid 76fps.
Well apart from radar when my fps does fluctuate and also it drops a alot when air strikes go off or theres a lot of arty spam. (I use a heavily tweaked config for matches but like to watch my demos with all the eye candy on )

Having an fps of 125 is only gonna enable you to jump a tad farther anyway imo and thats about it.If your fps is running at 125fps and drops to say 40 at certain bits thats a massive fluctuation. If your fps drops from 76 to say 40 then its not such a big fluctuation.
Imo steady fps is the name of the game especially in firefights.

(meLonF) #33

yeah, i have been considering lowering maxfps to 76, but i’m hesitent for a couple of reasons.

first is i can’t even hold a steady 76 fps (dropping down around the 60 mark), also i find 125 noticeably smoother (i know it sounds ridiculous, but it really does feel different). The final reason i’m hesitant to change to 76fps is that i used to be able to achieve a solid 125 all the time (with slight dips on radar). so theoretically i should be able to get my fps back to this level, i just need to work out how :S

(Kendle) #34

And while you’re at it spare a thought for those of us who have to cap at 43! (XP1800 + GF3) :frowning:

(BondyBoy007) #35

I feel your pain as I cap at 43 too, it still drops below 43 sometimes and thats on an xp2500 with a Ti4600

(Sick Boy) #36

Try syncing your ram to your FSB if you don’t already, maybe it’s a resyncing prob and your RAM is holding you back :???:

(meLonF) #37

i understand the pain of 43 fps i assure you … i had to play on my laptop the other day and i could only get around 25-40 fps @ 640 x 480 :o

thanks sick boy. I double checked this and my ram / fsb are currently at 1:1 ratio (as i have ddr500) so should be okay there

(meLonF) #38

i think i’m running out of things to try. i am gonna try rebuilding my config from scratch i think and if this doesn’t work i’ll probably end up doing something foolish like buying a new cpu

(Maximus191) #39

If your gonna splash the cash m8 i would suggest buying an Nvida 6800 when they are released shortly.
That will sort your fps issues out np o/
