Just as the title says, we start with Fragger, and in the tutorial we’re introduced to Skyhammer, Sawbonez, Bushwacka, and Red Eye, and get to pick two of those to start with.
What if we started with Fragger instead of Skyhammer
How about we give newbs engineers for starters.
Skyhammer is way better in the teamwork aspect: something that new players need to grasp in order to not screw their own team. I don’t want that to be an option.
Fragger is more concentrated dps and cannot give ammo though. If players don’t have free mercs for ammo and health, there’s going to be even less ammo and health given out as it already is.
Fragger is too selfish, Dirty Bomb is meant to be a team based game, so it is best to introduce new players to mercs that are teamplay focused. The only thing else they could do is also give the man engineer in addition to Skyhammer and Aura. Personally hoping they do that with Turtle.
Because they’d be pressing Q, instead of 4 + LMB hold.
Cooking is mandatory!
Alternatively, they’d learn the frustration of not having ammo w/ Fragger
Assuming they live long enough.

I feel like they run out of ammo enough as skyhammer and still don’t learn their lesson…
skyhammer is good.
Good easy to use gun, good, easy to use ability. Infinite ammo. Good health. Generally useful on any map. Skyhammer is fine.
Fragger doesn’t teach a player how to do objectives. Skyhammer has the potential to do so. Also, no, don’t give new players snipers.
If anything, SD could give new players one more merc to start with, preferably an engineer like Bushwhacker. That will round up the begineer roster much better; Skyhammer is basically Fragger-ultraLite already.
I was thinking for a while you should be able to choose any one merc of each category when you start out. Like 1 assault 1 fire support 1 medic and 1 engie for free. Except phantom of course.

Was going to say the same thing. I’ve always thought they should give away one engi for free as well, and I think it should be Bushwhacker.

Giving players a free engineer would just mean a lot more of 1 annoying ability going around.
A LOT more turrets, land mines or sticky bombs flying around than usual.
That being said, having a full game full of fresh players would really favor the defending side with EV maps, as no one on the attacking side would have an engineer to counter the airstrike onslaught… you know, assuming people even figure out how to use their airstrikes.
Perhaps at least 1 engineer should just always be on free rotation. At least that way I don’t have to deal with the possibility of running into turrets in every game.
Really I think the starting mercs should be Sawbonez, Bushwhacker and Skyhammar. It’s good to have a balance to new players don’t feel as forced into the class as they are now. The last thing I’d want is grenades hitting my face instead of ammo though.
I like the current starting mercs.
They are easy to use, straightforward and very effective as well.
Having a permanently unlocked engineer can be argued about.
Regardless I wouldn’t want an invisible marksman to be available from the very start, especially not in his current state.
I wish that Bushwhacker would be pushed more for a starter engineer than Proxy. He’d be better to teach new players skill without being too hard. His turret can be drop-and-forget just like Proxy’s mines, but it requires a bit more thought to be effective. Also, Bushwhacker would teach better aim-tracking than Proxy’s shotguns.
Makes more sense to me if we start with Skyhammer and Aura, and we get to choose between one additional merc that’s revealed at the end of the tutorial. I’m thinking Nader, Bushwhacker, or Proxy.
I see a lot of the same stuff, so I’ll try to address everything here.
So first off, yes, having Fragger means people won’t be throwing out ammo or air strikes, but the thing is, they already have this mentality guys. Forcing them to play a team player, does not make them a team player. You can not force a mindset on a player through the class, they will ultimately just play their way.
Considering Fragger is the back bone of Dirty Bomb team composition, in the same manner that Soldier is, it makes sense to have him be the first free merc. To allow players to get comfy with the shooting mechanics, the movement, etc.
Then, as I said in the op, in the tutorial, people are introduced to 4 other mercs, Skyhammer, Sawbonez, Bushwacka, and Aimee (I know I said Red Eye, but she has better weapon variety). The new players are introduced to these mercs, and then immediately after the tutorial they have to pick 2, so effectively they start with 3 mercs, Fragger, and whatever 2 they want to go with.
This way we get a few things down, we give a base character that has simple but always effective role, we explain the 4 main roles, Support, Medic, Engineer, and Recon, and how they work, and we give the player everything they need to get started.
I think for new players this will be a great way to get them started, much more so than now in my opinion and from what I have seen, which people not giving out ammo, and playing mercs way above their skill level at the beginning.
Would prefer if the default loadouts for all mercs were unlocked from the start so that merc limits and bans could be implemented in ranked.
Current merc unlock costs remain the same to unlock crafting for silver and up cosmetics. Bronze loadouts could still be purchased directly with credits or cash. Iron and lead would be removed and those loadouts in regular cases would be replaced with weapon kits, crafting kits, and credit boosters.
@watsyurdeal assuming that newbies are bad teamplayers is backwards logic. How else is a newbie supposed to learn the teamplay in the game? if you give fragger as starter merc it will only make things worse. this way at least the newbie skys will be bothered by teammates to give ammo, and upon doing so feel useful to the team. same reason why aura is a good starter medic: just put that station down and witness much rejoicing
