What if we started with Fragger instead of Skyhammer

@watsyurdeal assuming that newbies are bad teamplayers is backwards logic. How else is a newbie supposed to learn the teamplay in the game? if you give fragger as starter merc it will only make things worse. this way at least the newbie skys will be bothered by teammates to give ammo, and upon doing so feel useful to the team. same reason why aura is a good starter medic: just put that station down and witness much rejoicing

Thing is even if you do give them those mercs, it doesn’t guarantee they will actually do their job. The fact we keep hearing about the lack of ammo, revives, etc, is proof of that. To me, it makes more sense to give them Fragger so they get comfortable with how the shooting and fights work, and progressing to understanding how to play the other mercs and use their team supporting roles.

You can’t force people to be team players when they are struggling to learn how to fight, they are going to focus on that aspect first then go from there. Plus, like I said before, this is with the inclusion of a new tutorial and system that allows people to choose what starting mercs they want from a selection of 4.

Really I think the starting mercs should be Sawbonez, Bushwhacker and Skyhammar. It’s good to have a balance to new players don’t feel as forced into the class as they are now. The last thing I’d want is grenades hitting my face instead of ammo though.

While Sawbonez is my favorite medic, he’s not the best merc to start out with, Aura makes more sense because her healing is constant even under fire unlike the large medpacks of Sawbonez.

Skyhammer is already a mini-Fragger if his airstrike goes off indoors. He has similar weaponry other than the vastly superior Timik to Fragger’s K-121 so he’s already a solid choice to teach people the shooting mechanics.

I chose sawbonez because he’s a good balance of assault and medic, but not as impactful as free Phoenixes would be. Most new players stay away from Aura because she’s so squishy, whether or not her healing ability is simpler.
Sawbonez is my least favourite medic anyways, lol. He just feels so bland. But to new players who want to feel somewhat viable in combat, he’s a good choice.

I don’t think Fragger would be a good starter. I like what we currently have, except maybe an engi starter and Arty instead of Skyhammer.

@watsyurdeal you’re thinking in terms of how to make it easiest for a newbie which is a fair point.

Imo, more important is to present the game fairly to the player. Yes many of them will suck at reviving, giving ammo etc. however this type of, what i call, basic teamplay is core to the game and the fun we all get from it; which is why its essential to show it to the player asap.

Newbie with a fragger might have a more comfortable k/d, but they must also abandon the game as ‘just another COD clone’ or sth.

From personal experience back in RTCW i remember the first time i revived someone, and saw that player writeup ‘thanks’ and proceed to rek faces. Its a great feeling to be able to have an impact on the game when you are only learning the ropes and see how you are contributing to the team. We should expand the space in which this can happen, not limit it.

Hell no.
No way Redeye should be available as a first merc.
Just make Turtle a free engie and remove free rotations (I’m totally not saying it just because I want my Turtle already)

Btw, Bushwacka is a melee weapon for Sniper in tf2

arty is too advanced

As other people have been said, Fragger is not as much of a ‘team player’ as Skyhammer is and we wan’t to push players towards playing the objective and helping teammates as much as possible.

Yet you don’t give them engineers… Huh.

I think it’s correct as is, ammo and meds, what you need to start earning credits, engi should be the first buy, as is intended. It’s unfortunate that other crap games emphasize “Boom Headshot” over teamwork especially in pootube vids

ya gotta think, it really helps
