What happens if there is no PSN?

(SuperWaz) #1

PS3 question for anyone in the know.

Since there’s no PlayStation Network at the moment, and I’m guessing Brink has already gone to “print”, how will this affect the game if it’s still not back on launch day?

Obviously it’s going to kill the multiplayer side, but I wonder does Brink need PSN also to be “live” to play offline (since I would presume XP is stored on a central server rather than locally).

If so, you’ve got a game that’s effectively dead at launch.

Of course, I’d expect PSN to be back, but you never know.

Sony’s latest is:

We are taking the investigation seriously. We will keep the service down to allow us to conduct a thorough investigation and verify smooth operation of our network services but are working hard to resume the services as soon as we can be reasonably assured security concerns are addressed.

you’ll have to play offline ie: Single Player

dude just stop. brink releases in 2 weeks and by that time psn would have been down for 3 weeks. it wont happen. they already confirmed yesterday it’ll be within a week. if they lie, the media will attack so im sure they wont

(SuperWaz) #4

But you can gain XP offline, right? And I would assume that would need a connection to a central server to track this. Lots of games are working this way now.

If PSN is dead, then isn’t also the ability to gain XP?

I’m going to be so disappointed if it’s not back up by launch date, the PSN ‘hack’ is all over CNN fox news and all those channels, i think that’s making it even worse for Sony. My gut feeling is it’s going to be at least another week or so, as long as it’s back by may 9 at 11:59 pm I’ll be happy lol

(SuperWaz) #6

And you believe what Sony says, why exactly?

you gain xp and unlocks playing at any time, on or offline, there’s no difference

Are we operating under the assumption that there’s going to be midnight launches for Brink?

(ed lolington) #9

His point about being able to level offline is valid regardless of what the PSN/Live networks do. Theoretically someone without an internet connection could buy the game and they would of course want to be able to play the single player to the fullest extent.

I’m willing to wager that since the “System Requirements” doesn’t list an internet connection that all the information can be tracked offline too and then synced to the servers later.

(Shadedluck) #10

Alright, here’s how I’m pretty sure it will work, and it will probably be a major exploit. The game, for single player, will track the points offline. Then, when you go online, it will add them to the database for you, so you will never be not gaining points if you play. I’m 90% sure this second one is how it will work. It might track it on your own console file, and will follow you into the online world. The exploit that I mentioned earlier will have to do with hacking the game to give you more experience than you would get in offline mode, then going online and awarding it. So it will probably be the second one.

(SuperWaz) #11

This is my point. Seeing as they’re making SP and MP essentially the same thing, I would assume that it’s going to track the XP as you play.

If I am wrong, and it’s stored locally it’s an easy target for hackers and you’re going to see levels maxed out instantly a la MW2.

(obliviondoll) #12

Pretty much 100% certain there’s no requirement to be online to get XP.

Should be fine to play now if you can get a copy.

ohhh noes, the sky is falling

I believe I read something on the Sony Blog today, earlier (i’ll see if i can find the link) where it stated a possible firmware/patch update for PSN before the end of this week. So i’m sure itll be back up before Brink is released. From what I can tell from press releases made by Sony they have got all the jank fixed and locked down, they are just trying to make sure that more hacks can’t be performed on the system.

I did hear that the hacker had/has access to over 75million+ account holder’s personal information including name, addresses, logins, passwords, and credit card info. Just got an email about it from Sony today. I’m not worried about anything though.

On the off chance that PSN is still down on May 10th (unlikely) i will play the hell outta Brink offline and enjoy it immensely.

MW2 didn’t store information about a player’s level on the clientside. The hacks that allowed people to instantly rank up involved directly addressing volatile memory and making numbers bigger so that you got more experience for trivial things.

The nice thing about Brink is that it has rank matching. Anyone who chooses to exploit the system and insta-level to 20 will only be playing with other people who have done the same (until the rest of us have caught up normally). If they choose to hack their way to level 4 then they will only be in your bracket for a few games before they rank up and have a server full of rank 2 bots.

True, but how many times have you heard that a game has matchmaking only to find yourself getting raped by high level opponents in your first day of playing.

(Linsolv) #17

There’s a big difference between matchmaking (matching players by skill) and tiers (players divided by level). You CAN NOT be matched (through matchmaking) with a level 20 as a level 5. It’s not “unlikely,” it’s impossible unless you explicitly state, “I want to ignore my level in matchmaking.”

(SuperWaz) #18

Hate to say I told you so, but…

Sony spokesman says company is now aiming to bring PSN fully back online by May 31st

Not good news for Brink’s PS3 owners.

(Diablo85) #19

This can really hurt the sales and the size of the community for BRINK on the PS 3

(Angelus3K) #20

Can a dev or someone in the US who gets the game tomorrow confirm XP is still awarded with no PSN connection?
