What happened to this Game?!

So yeah, what happened to Brinks visuals?
I know you’re all overly protective when it comes to brink and criticism, so I wanna clear this right away: Im talking strict about the visuals, dont even dare to mention something like “hurr durr gameplay over graphics hurp derp”.
I understand that, but it’s not like they’re exclusive to each other, you can have both without compromising the other at all.(some small exceptions exists like removing ragdolls for static death animations to make the medics life easier)

And dont tell me splash damage has not enough time to deal with such “unimportant” things as graphics, the above videos are older than any other videos and they still look better, so the time was probably spent already…

So, how did that happen?

newer videos look blurry, the colors look washed out and everything looks brighter, as if they used a certain color filter like bethesda did with fallout3/NV( f3 was green everywhere and NV was orange everywhere).
the specular mapping and the bump mapping seem to be decreased by quite a bit too.
the explosions took a hit aswell, look at how the gate blows open in the second video, it has a huge impact on the player, everything is shaking and it looks just way more immersive.
same for grenade explosions.

again, people could argue that such shaky cam wouldnt fit into competitive shooters, but PC players will surely be able to disable all the camera bob, and that said, it’s a major event, it’s a main objective, I think we should expect that the completion of a main objective should have a certain “impact”.

Even animations seem to have changed, the “recoil animation” seems to be way more steady, probably one reason why so many people cry about the lack of recoil…
the grenade animation looks awkward compared to what we see in the older footage.
(I cant point it out exactly, but the current grenade throwing just looks off, it doesnt look like a solder would toss a grenade… more as if a angry person throws his broken mobile to the ground lol)

Yes Im a graphics whore, most people are, even if they dont say it like that.
I would prefer a good looking game with good gameplay rather than a bad looking game with good gameplay… seems plausible to me…

And again, dont get to overly protective pls, I bought the game already for PC, ages ago.
and I still have the hope the PC version will look at least close to what we’ve seen before.
SD’s claim they develope the game on all 3 platforms seperately makes me hope, aswell as the fact that we havent seen any PC footage since back then when the container city parts were released…
it’s no deal braker, but it would be nice to have the amazing looks COUPLED with the awesome gameplay for atleast once.

dont worry, the pc master race will prevail.

(Angrim) #3

That is most likely PC footage played with a Xbox360-Controller and at least the interaction at the very beginning (probably much more) has been set up just for the presentation.

Since we have not seen PC footage for a long time we do not know if the visuals actually changed that much.

edit Just to be perfectly clear: I am not saying PC still looks like this. We do not know anything about the actual PC visuals apart from them probably being superior to console visuals.

(angemon) #4

That footages you linked are from PC with xbox360 controller. They had to water down graphics to fit to consoles I think. I pray to god that PC version remains the same as those videos…

(Mustang) #5

You slightly touched on it, but the video’s you linked to are PC rendered, everything recently has been console rendered
I too “hope” that that it will look much nicer of PC and that they haven’t released any recent PC footage to avoid outcry from consolers when they play the game themselves and find it doesn’t look as good as they were previously shown

God, just cos we cant afford a high-spec computer u start dissin. not everyones a nerd. and consoles are better socially.

(madness) #8

The older videos look like they just turned down the brightness so you couldn’t see the low res textures :stuck_out_tongue:

i hope that one i will graduate from a console to a pc so that i too can become a humongous ass

With colors, Radiosity is still a huge problem for graphics. Its the concept that light bounces off of surfaces causing color bleed and soft shadows. In videogames, a lack of radiosity causes everything to look really fake without being able to put your finger on a reason why; but graphics processors are not currently able to calculate it real time.

The common solution in video games is to make everything a similar color and put in a lot of ambient light. It gets rid of the color bleed issue and makes all the shadows soft, but it causes some of the problems you mentioned above.

About animations though, I think the video above was Xbox, so the FPS is capped at 30, rather than a PC which can be a lot more fluid. By console standards, the animations in the video look pretty good to me.

I’m not really sure exactly what you’re complaining about with some of the issues, i think it would be a lot easier to respond if you had a pair of videos to compare (preferably with times), rather than just showing gameplay footage and saying “it was better before”.

(Angrim) #11

Yeah, no … you can clearly make out high res textures and superior lightning and shadows.

Not sure who or what you are responding to. This is merely a discussion of what has happened to the visuals and what to expect from the PC version.

Also PCs are not more expensive than Xbox360/PS3 if you do some minimal research (at least in Europe) and - between boards like this, voice-chat, platforms like Steam, and so on - feature way more social interaction.

Hold those horses chaps
It’s simply trying to answer the question as to why recent footage hasn’t looked as great
No need for either side to turn hostile

LOL, i likes the hair.

It’s a joke, relax.

If I recall correctly this was first shown at gamescom Cologne 2009.
Not sure why you believe this ran on Xbox. I am pretty sure it is a PC with Xbox360 Controller. My memory is a bit cloudy but I believe they actually said this when someone asked this in the presentation room.

Also I can not imagine it would ever look that good on Xbox. Especially back in 2009 when they had little time optimizing their modified version of id tech4 for consoles.

(beute) #16

stop the PC vs consoles war plz.
not here to discuss that.

And yes, Im aware that this is PC footage with a 360 controller.
Of course the PC version will look better than the console counter parts, but that difference is like night and day.
I’ve yet to see a company take soooo much effort to improve the PC version so much so that it looks completely different, yet refuse to actually show PC footage…

I would be happy if SD did that, but I kinda have the feeling that they backed off from the graphics in the older videos and instead rewrote the engine/downscaled it to make it work on consoles.
back then there were rumours that SD wasnt able to get that version run on consoles with stable 30 frames per second.

(Angrim) #17

That sounds about right. It is unlikely they would have been able to let the game look like this on the consoles. Though, that would not necessarily mean they cut back on the visuals for the PC version as well.

(beute) #18

the footage is from the PC, it’s the only PC footage presented as a video.
and yes, these animations look good.
Im talking about the new ones, everything that came after that…

I didnt link a specific video because there are dozens of them, and we’ve seen them all.
I thought everyone would’ve the pictures right infront of their eyes, considering the game is about to be released :open_mouth:

(oO Para oo) #19

Agreed i have said this before the explosions look so bad in this game, like a piece of pop corn popped really let the game down and it kills the immersion.

(beute) #20

indeed.
now just look at the explosion in this video , especially when the door blows up.
now that is an explosion.

so what happened to that?
why were so many things scaled down so massively…
