What happened to the bots?

I mean they were started and almost finished, the file is still there but the bots aren’t. I mean why not???

If someone needs justification for bots I’ll give them:

-Single player mode.
-They fill up empty servers. (having 4 people on one server isn’t enough but 4 people and 16 bots is.)
-They train newbies.
-They are good for map testing. (which team has the advantage, what is the best ratio of players/team)

So is there a specific reason why not or is it just “didn’t feel like it” ???

because they could be saving the bot source code for future projects/development, not necessarily related to RTCW. People typically don’t just give away intellectual property just because they aren’t fully using it at this point in time

Using it would not have been ‘giving’ away intellectual property. It just didn’t fit in to the finished project’s goals.

It is my understanding that they could not get the bot code to work the way they wanted it to. So the bots are shelved. Perhaps they will work out the bugs in the future, but I would not expect them to pursue this for ET.

i’d imagine bots would be pretty hard to program. I mean how would you be able to tell a bot to “go into the first tug, drive the tug to the ammo depot” lower track switch, raise the track switch! I mean, there are still plenty of humans who don’t know what the hell to do on the Railgun Map.

We need covert ops! would a bot acutally know you wanted to sneak in for a reason?

i dunno, i could be wrong, maybe the AI today is smarter than i think.

To Cyber Knight:

Have you ever played any complex 3d game with bots on (for example TFC or counter strike)

I mean the AI is magnificent! Some bots are even better than the players.

And for the programming it isn’t that hard to insert:

If Tug_place < 1 (over the line) --> then don’t switch it. And the opposite for the opposite team.

The only real problem with bots is the accuracy. The bots will hit you with 100% guarantee and you have to decrease it from there. IN these cases the fact that the bot misses on purpose shows pretty badly.

An other thing related to the accuracy is the shots for an enemy ratio. It is allways optimized for bots so that they never miss a bullet. (If you need 3 bullets to die they’ll deliver excatly 3 not 4.) And if you try to fix this the results are often terrible. An example of this is PODBOT for CS. In this BOT they made it so that the bots would miss some bullets (you die from 5 they shoot 8 ) or something. This worked well on automatic weapons, but when it came to rifles it sucked. I mean bot shooting and killing you reloading (for some 5 secs) and shooting again to the corpse.

But anyhow the bots would be great!
