It has been a while since I last played Dirty Bomb (almost 1 year, probably), recently I opened the game and noticed that my ping on all South AM servers is around 114 (I’m from Brazil). I got the IP from the servers and tracked them and found out the South AM servers are now on the US (Florida).
What is the reasoning behind this? There’s no one playing on the South AM servers right now, with good reason, the pings are unacceptable for a FPS. Why kill the game for people that are actually from South America to benefit people from North America? I would really appreciate if a developer or anyone that is in charge could clarify this.
What happened to South AM servers?
Well, people from SA do mind, so I don’t really understand why did they move the servers from here to NA, it makes no sense at all. Moving the servers so people from the largest gaming market on SA can’t play properly won’t make your game more popular or anything.
they say the are looking for the best position for everyone althought they’ve been saying it for more than a year.
There’s no “best position for everyone”, they will never find that, it’s just not possible.
Valve for example has servers on Brazil and servers on Peru/Chile and other SA countries on games like TF2 and CS:GO because it’s simply not possible for everyone to get good ping (I usually get 5 to 15 ping on Valve’s servers located on Brazil, and then I get 80 on Chile and 140 on Peru). The current “solution” only makes the more active countries on SA get pings higher than 100 all the time.

5 ping ()_() That’s less than I get when I play with someone in the same building…
A lot of things don’t make sense tbh @regaliaLettuce. For example, they blended Australia and Asia ranked servers into one, then moved the servers to a location that makes both the Asian and Australian players ping worse than the old location. Like it’s worse for both parties, not just one of them, so it was a really bad decision all round.
The end result is we all just play pub, because none of us want to play ranked with 200+ pings.
I see. So they have no clue about what they are doing, they are probably moving the servers around to the cheapest location at the expense of gameplay and ultimately their global player base.
Guess killing the playability of their game is a good way of expanding it (tip: it’s not).

Last time I played a match on TF2 I had 7 ping, so yeah, it’s possible to get such low ping if the routes are good enough and the server is close.
The game’s code also adds latency, for example, when I play Payday 2 with my friends I get around 40-60 ping, and when I ping them directly I can get as low as 12 ping with a friend from another state. We both have fiber optic connections, by the way.

game’s code doesn’t add latency, routing does, your data packets doesn’t flow the same way in the game as it does in the normal cmd ping. Different ISP’s have different ping because of different routing paths.

I know about routing, I was just trying to rationalize why would he have higher pings on LAN than I do online, and the only reason can be the game itself or the hardware he has on his house/apartment/building adding latency.
Anyway, please stop going off-topic, I’m still waiting for an official answer to this (even though it seems they don’t really care).
I doubt you will get a believable answer, cost is likely the biggest factor in an unreleased game with minimal income
I believe the people we interact with do care about us, the topic, and the relationships between all parties involved. Unfortunately due to how the business community their hands are tied on certain things. They can not share everything if at all, but I am confident they do take notice of issues such as this. Normal people do. Anyway…
You are going to have to wait till Monday at least due to the fact that the employees of both Nexon and Splash damage appear to have the weekends off. like I said though they may not be able to comment fully due to how business works. business is quite a beast to deal with I think.
It’s the weekend there. You probably won’t get an answer for another 12 hours if you do, when they’re back in the office.

I have never used these forums before, so I don’t really know if developers or anyone from the staff responds to messages here often or even checks these messages. I guess I will have to wait and find out.
they seldom reply to issues regarding placement of servers outside of “We try to accommodate everyone”
Questions regarding the actual game are handled much better
Well, in this case it’s a pretty extreme issue. They should just rename the servers to “North AM” or “US Central” or anything of the like, because the “South AM” servers are definitely not accommodating anyone from SA, with all this “not actually being located in SA but being located in the US” thing.
We have already issued a statement here about this: http://forums.dirtybomb.nexon.net/discussion/23998/updated-latin-america-and-south-america-server-status
Cheers.

I have read that prior to making this thread, and honestly, it makes no sense at all.
You say that a “small handful of players have reported higher pings”, but the server is located in the US, so even thought just a “small handful of players” have complained, the server will obviously give worse performance to the southern region of SA, which contains the biggest cities of Brazil (like São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Curitiba, and other capitals from the southeast and south regions of the country), basically the largest player bases in the country and on SA get worse ping now.
You also say that people from NA have started using the servers, and that’s one of the most ridiculous things I have read in a while, because the servers are supposed to be used by SA, not NA. If you want people from NA playing, simply make more US servers, not move SA servers to the US so (I will say it again) the largest player base in SA can’t play properly.
I doubt that any person from Brazil, or Argentina, or anyone from the big countries over here can play with low pings like before (I used to have around 20 ping on SA servers last year, now I get 115 ping).
You have to realize one thing: if you mess up the game for a lot of people, most of them will just abandon it, not come here reporting their pings.
