what fov do you use?

(EvilBaga) #1

As the topic says…

(TFate) #2

90

Anything else just doesn’t feel right for me.

(eq-Shrike) #3

115 for me …

(Kendle) #4

105, tried going back to 90 when I started playing ET (used 110 in RTCW) and couldn’t, movement just felt so wrong. Managed to get it down to 105 but that’s as low as I can go.

(Sauron|EFG) #5

I never tried anything other than 90.

(no_shad) #6

90, anything else just looks nasty to me. It’s one of the cvars I would like to see cheat protected, although I suppose it is actually useful for widescreen/non-standard displays.

(DarkangelUK) #7

97

(Salteh) #8

120, what fov does the topicstarter use? :bash:

(SCDS_reyalP) #9

110, 90 for long range.

(DG) #10

110.0000001

plus toggle key for 90, which i basically never use anyway.

(Akilae) #11

110 with a switch to 90 too here. quite useful swtich on low res display.

(Cerebrate) #12

110 close, 90 long

(Rain) #13

I use 97.5, right on the border of “extra FOV” and “looks like ass.”

(ouroboro) #14

i’ve used em all,

90, 97.5, 100, 105, 112.5, 120

i finally went back to 90 after coming to the conclusion that higher fov is actually detrimental to accuracy, not the other way around (higher fov = fewer pixels per target). this is the same reason i use a high resolution, rather than the commonly-accepted-as-elite 640x480.

as for the peripheral vision aspect, i never stop moving and looking around, so it’s not an issue. i’m not likely to get jumped from the side by anybody i would have seen at higher fov, since i’m always scanning side to side anyway.

as for the “speed” effect - placebo only, therefore easily dismissed.

i’ve come to the conclusion that fov is a common tweak simply because it has league limits, and if a cvar is limited, it must be beneficial to tweak it, right? rather, i see fov as a possible exploit only if unlimited and used as a fast toggle to quickly get a better picture of your surroundings - but actually playing with it higher than 90 isn’t beneficial at all IMO. in fact i consider it harmfull.

i would probably lower it if i was allowed, perhaps to 80 or so (which is the default in another Q3 engine game - SoF2).

i always intended to do an experiment where i ran at r_mode 3 and cg_fov 120 for a week of pubbing, then do the same at r_mode 8 and cg_fov 90 - all the while doing a stats dump, and with all other settings being equal - then checking the numbers. but i’m too lazy to bother. i know what works for me.

(Gimpsta) #15

110 … I play on a 24" widescreen monitor

(Fusen) #16

100 normal and 90 when crouching

(next_ghost) #17

105 - happy medium for trickjumps and good peripheral vision.

(Cerebrate) #18

Hey that’s a good idea. I might try that. But how do you get it back automatically after standing up?

(Fusen) #19

set cron “+movedown;cg_fov 90;sensitivity 2.9;set vstr croff”
set croff “-movedownk;cg_fov 105;sensitivity 3.5;set vstr cron”
bind c “+vstr cron croff”

(Bongoboy) #20

I use 20°, for that authentic “through a toilet roll” effect. I’m surprised more people don’t use it too.:weird:

:moo:
