What ex ETQW players think of Brink?

(system) #41

Well, if alive players don’t see the spawn timer than they are forced to either look for a medic or camp waiting for one, because suiciding they might end up waiting 20 seconds for respawn. Hence, the health regen. It minimizes the chance afraid cats from running away or doing nothing for too long.

(tokamak) #42

I’m not talking about the respawn timer, I’m talking about the lack of means to conveniently kill yourself.

(system) #43

Kinda the same, duck or run away.

(tokamak) #44

Right and with the added knowledge of when the new respawn wave will be and where to expect the new reinforcements. It will give you questions about whether you hold the position for them or run back towards them.

(jegis) #45

ETQW is the only game I know where people actually get angry at you for killing yourself.

(tokamak) #46

I imagine in games where kills matter even more, like COD people would be more pissed.
In terms of evasive shooting, I get the feeling parkour shooting will replace the strafe dance shooting of etqw

maybe light body type will be able to pull off the side to side strafe shuffle, will have to wait n see
I wish the movement would be responsive enough to let every bodytype strafe properly. It doesn’t always require higher movement speeds; even in TF2 every class can do it, though it’s not as advantageous to heavies as it is to scouts.

You think watching a timer and hitting a button repeatedly is a skill?

Have I got a job for you:

(tokamak) #49

Ha that’s the exact same point many Zerg players make

(system) #50

I play zerg and I find the puke larvae very relaxing, it also helps you develop a sense of timings other races lack.

I guess idiots will be idiots no matter what.

I was pretty excited right from the first time I heard of Brink. I love Enemy Territory (both Wolfenstein and Quake Wars). Spent hours over hours, playing both.
(The Linux version of both. So I still hope, that Brink eventually gets a Linux client. :penguin: Although it’s a bit unlikely due to Steamworks)
Brink also has the Science fiction setting, that I already liked about Quake Wars, plus extensive character customization. Which is a huge plus in my book.
So I preordered Brink back in 2009.

Gameplay wise, watching the Brink GP-Videos, I feel like being back in W: ET.
And I had a pretty good time back there.
The closer we get to release though, the more warily I watch gameplay videos. And while watching them, I get the feeling, that Brink still has too many movement constraints, compared to what SD is marketing.
There are a few places where you can jump over certain things or climb certain things, but it’s not much different from having stairs in certain places, in other games.
You can’t really climb the front of a building.
You can jump and grapple onto objects.
I’ll have to see how it eventually plays. But even though I have some doubts, I’m sure that I will love Brink. Since it’s what I’ve been waiting for. Even if it should turn out to have downsides.

I’m happy to see more of a story line being implemented, I think that was something that was missing in ETQW.

Only thing I’m a little bit worried about is the new way of switching class, I’m use to have my classes bound so I can simple /kill and be back into action… This was very handy being a tech as strogg, making a host and coming back as a constructor to defuse a plant!

Not sure how its going to work in Brink but I’m not going to knock it till I try it…
