What Every Competitive Game Needs: Offline Mode with Bots

(Twinkey) #41

mabye take advantage over the steam workshop and let ppl build up maps for training, Aim,Trickjumps etc.
IMO this would be a great feature

YESYESYES

I imagine nearly every competitive team will have their own locked dedicated servers to run around on, though I prefer to use a birdseye view of the map to do tactics and an actual competitive team to try them on, I don’t see any need for offline components Other than for lan events.

I join people saying they have much more important thing to do than adding bots to the game. Designing a truly good AI is a monster time consuming task for a developer team. And a truly good AI in dirty bomb, that would mean an AI able to play like real players during fights, which will be definitely though. Not to mention proper defensive/offensive and objective related behaviour. Even strong developers teams (with way more people at work than in dirty bomb) skip on that part due to the time it requires to obtain something viable. CS:GO, battlefields and ‘last date’ fast fps (quake live, UT4…) just uses former games AI to fulfil this.
ET:QW’s AI felt to me like going in a pub fight against somebody completly drunk. And I’m not talking about their APC driving skills. Don’t drink and drive.

But I’d vote for the ability to run a map on your own and even a LAN possibility.

(Kitsunami) #45

yes please. This is also essential so that in the worse case scenario of offline servers people can practice moves and such.

(Meat) #46

Empty servers are also good for tweaking your game settings. Trying to tweak them on a full server is like putting your team down a player while you try to figure out how to boost your FPS.

People living with a limiting bandwidth or connection aren’t really able to join empty servers just to train a bit of jumping. I aggree that building up an AI out of nothing would be to time consuming aswell as tweaking working AI’s. A training server on the other hand is just the server files executed on ur own pc with a localhost ip and a direct connection.
This wouldn’t be the point in CREATING. The security is a whole other topic. As far as I saw they didn’t gave the server files away all the servers seems to be “rented” or pre hosted by the company itself, this shows me that they cant just give us the option to open up our own local servers since that would lead to us having the server files. Even if the servers would have NO impact in EXP, Drops whatsoever, it wouldn’t be a easy step to take.
But i hope they are willed to go this route and I hope that someday we are able to host our own servers with OUR rules, OUR maps to enjoy the game a bit more freely than I can enjoy the most games these days.

It’d be great if we had some kind of an offline shooting range kind of a deal, to practice aiming, learning nade physics and whatnot, or the ability to just play maps offline to discover and practice jumps.

I hope that something like this is introduced to the game at some point, it doesn’t even have to be anything too fancy, and bots with AI aren’t necessary for it.
The current training tutorial is very basic, and lacking in features.

I wouldnt even mind the ability to spawn training targets like they have in the tutorial

I wouldnt even mind having no opponents what so ever. But I’m afraid that this will stay a dream some time longer

easy, join an empty server

What was that (S)nail? My quote is even in the comment. No offense, but I dont want to deal with lagg / bandwidth usage while i play for my own. It is not necessary to hope that no one joins the server and that i have to limit myself with my network usage while I play for myself. Further there are some people that have a limited bandwidth with a contigent, i wouldnt want to waste my contigent to play on a empty server.

Name calling, really ?

get better internet then, ask your mommy nicely

Yeah but being able to host a server takes away lag and gives you a feel for the raw game which is nice like in SF2. I think the ability to spawn targets would be really cool. Not mercs but just targets like the ones in the tutorial. Something like press shift and one will spawn where you’re standing.

there has been absolutely no mention of availability of server binaries in the 3 years I’ve been involved. just sayin

Yeah because I enjoy paying way to much for my 800 kbit bandwidth! There are places where no such thing as “better internet” exist my friend. Name calling, i feeled like it. Sorry pal.

Yeah, it is always the same with modern free to play games, when were the last one released with server binaries? Hope they change their mind though.

[…]paying way to much for my 800 kbit bandwidth […] no such thing as “better internet”[…][/quote]
I’ve seen lots of people on the internet who claim they can’t get better internet, and most of the time it’s true, but I feel that if a person has an passion that is important to them (like playing online shooters and being good at it) they should try to base their life around it; move countries if necessary, etc.
But if it isn’t that much of a big deal to that person, they shouldn’t get mad when it doesn’t work out, they have better things to do in their life, their own passions to find.
Or maybe that doesn’t fit you at all, you could be in hiding from government agents and you’re stealing wifi from an old radio station, I don’t know you :P

I’ve noticed that Source Engine games pretty much always distribute server binaries, most CoD games did too, but hardly any Unreal server binaries are ever released.
SplashDamage did make Brink on id4, and that has server binaries out, maybe there’s a pattern, maybe there isn’t.
But I do know that there are lots of dedicated server binaries out there for free games.

I’m in no way mad about anyone pointing out i could join an empty server. The point is I wont sell my own house or move houses/countries while still doing school just for having the comfort to play on an empty server by myself working out jumps and something like that while watching a video on my 2nd Monitor. Come on! I can play, I can watch movies, but not both together!

You are totally right there. We can just wait and hope. Miss Murder posted a comment somewhere that they are looking into private servers. Let’s see how that turns out.
